Re: Vagabond 263-265 Discussion / 266 Prediction Thread

Ueda of course is leaving out the bit about how the whole after after Seijurou and Denshichirou is on his head, of course... ;-) A hint as to what's going on may be seen by what he said in Chapter 260:
Don’t get too close to him, young lady. Musashi cannot escape the spiral*… Soon enough Musashi’s reputation as the strongest will become well established… And then those wanting to kill Musashi and ride the wave of fame will appear**… And they will come challenging him with their mannerless and barbaric methods… Just the way…Musashi once did to us back then...
* The "spiral of death and killing," a concept that Ueda may know of, although it was Shishidou Baiken and Musashi who spoke of it in the novel. (Baiken's defeat is touched upon in a future issue in a Musashi introspective.)
** Musashi's already had a nightmare about this happening while he was crippled, being on the receiving end of the "dog eat dog" cycle of tenka musou (unequaled under heaven).

just read 265. awesome. it's building up, the two great masters that will soon meet. I'm really enjoying this because I haven't read up anything about Miyamoto Musashi in history or other literatures.

It's so cool to once again have Vagabond on regular basis. I'm still surprised to see there's not a bigger following of that manga so I'd like to thanks again everyone who is responsible on providing us with the Edited Mangas.

266 has been the most interesting one I've read so far. Can't believe Musashi and Kojiro are going to be in the same castle.

yes, very interesting chapter.

i never thought it would go in that direction. i was thinking all this while that it would be kojiro vs musashi. well, who knows, maybe so, in the end, because only they are worthy of each other as rivals. but i never thought they'd be together so soon like that. i thought they'd always be kept on separate ways until they face each other.

very deep sh*t too about the katana by the old man. cool.

Re: Vagabond 266-267 Discussion / 268 Prediction Thread

The last conversation in the chapter was a bit confusing to start off with, just from how they were talking. It didn't help that it was really late (early?) when we were proofing/typesetting it, but, looking over it now, I think the confusion just comes from the nature of the conversation.

Anyway, the basic idea is that Itakura is regretting that he never got strong like Musashi, because he was too anxious rather than aggressive, and is telling Musashi to continue in a sensible manner (the middle way, I suppose). It's sort of a vicarious thing, I think, where Itakura wishes he could have been as awesome as Musashi and wants to see Musashi continue without destroying himself.

Hope that helps ;)

But then the old man thought in his mind that the middle path is still weakness. And is he saying that Musashi can become a samurai to continue his way of the sword? Idunno, maybe i need to go back and read it more carefully, cause I didn't understand too well either.
And why the bowl? haha

The bowl thing ? More or less, even though the bowl has been made with the purpose of remaining some time in the fire, when you let it there for too long it ends up crackling. Same thing for Musashi or Kojiro, if they keep living such lives for too long, even though they were born to become swordsmen, they'll end up defeated/destroyed.

The middle way is something important to buddhists, negociating, concealing differents things, etc. Musashi can't keep on living only by the sword, but neither can he quit it and found a family for example. So... the middle way is better, although it's weakness in the sense that it won't be sword only, nor family only. It's weakness but it's the best way.
Got the idea ?

Re: Vagabond 263-265 Discussion / 266 Prediction Thread

My theory re: this abstract figure -- the inner voices of the featured characters, although the bit about "I must decapitate him!" threw me for a loop (since I thought only Ootagurou thought that).

I must say though that "wasted" and "devoted/spent" have entirely different implications as to what Musashi is saying about his life. (I'm actually the same age.) In English though, what he said before that kinda leans towards the "wasted" interpretation, that he wasted 22 years on the path of the sword only to learn how intangible and passing is the idea of being tenka musou.

Re: Vagabond 266-267 Discussion / 268 Prediction Thread

Generalist versus specialist, I suppose. Look at Musashi's father Shinmen Munisai: tenka musou, but also a dysfunctional father who shut out the world, had apparently no friends, and beyond raising Musashi for part of his life seems to have had no other impact on the world, not even rating more than a mention by the Yoshioka. (Although Musashi is another reading of Takezou, Shinmen uses totally different kanji from Miyamoto, so in Vagabond they may have simply never connected Musashi to Munisai.)

The "I must decapitate him!" line was actually Ootaguro saying it, I think -- the scene was of Grudgey standing behind the crowd that had gathered around Ootaguro, who was presumably hidden by the crowd. At least, that's probably the clearest interpretation of that panel.
