Re: Vagabond anime/OVA, good or bad?

Are you absolutely sure the manga spawned a stage production? I know the story Musashi has been made into film, tv shows and now a manga countless times, so i think it is book->stage production, not manga->stage production.

Inoue must be pretty big in japan because i can think of few other mangaka that get the kind of free time he gets (Miura of Berserk fame being the other) and he has two simultaneous series running along with one of the most popular series ever in japan, Slam Dunk. It is so huge, in fact, that it remains on of the all time sellers on the shonen jump list with Dragonball Z and One Piece, two of the largest phenomenon (sp?) ever to hit japan....but i digress, my point is that Vagabond sure does have the popularity but even with that, what studio would back the OVA with the kind of funding it would need?

Re: Vagabond anime/OVA, good or bad?

Well, from what I read in the back of the book (where all the historical character info is) it mentions that the manga brought renewed intrest in the story and a stage production was made "in it's honor." And in terms of studio backing and whatnot, I have no idea. I just like to think of the idea of actually having Vagabond in anime form and having a nerdgasm if I ever get to see it.

Re: Vagabond anime/OVA, good or bad?

If a heavy budget was put into making a Vagabond anime, I'm quite sure it'd be a very thrilling show to watch. I've always wanted to see the first fight between Musashi and Inshun played out, as well as other purely kinetic fights such as Musashi v. Yagyu Castle.

Vagabond would definitely make it on its own merits as an anime, and I'd love to buy it; but I think it'd just cost way too much to produce. Inoue's art is extremely intricate.

Re: 217 Discussion [Vagabond]

Excellent chapter, and I'd like to thank you for scanning it for us.

Musashi's sudden aggressiveness to lop off Denshichiro's hand really caught me by surprise as Musashi seemed so aloof early on in the fight. Even though I already know Denshichiro gets his ass kicked, I'm curious to see what happens after the battle. I wonder if Ueda will end up dueling Kojiro.

The final page kind of scares me though. Did Musashi lunge in for the kill or did Denshichiro run in and grab him? Judging from the position of Musashi's sword at the end, I'm sad to say it's probably the latter.

Musashi's turned into quite a badass in just one year, though. I wonder what Inoue's got lined up next.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Even though I read your scans, I still buy the Viz licensed manga to support their efforts for bothering to even translate Vagabond. Doling out 10 bucks a month to support such an awesome manga isn't so bad.

Vagabond Art thread

You guys may have read on Inoue's website that he released two artbooks titled "Sumi" and "Water". They're basically books containing art from Vagabond.

Anybody know an import site where I can buy these at? Can't really order it from a Japanese site as I don't read Japanese.

Re: Vagabond anime/OVA, good or bad?

Vagabond could make an amazing anime, it could even be one of those that raises the bar in for the industry. it is possible for them to capture all of Inoue's style and detail, it would just cost a ton of money. Akira the anime captured the feel of the manga and they only used like the first 200- 400 pages of a 2000 page manga. so it can happen, but only the futrue knows what lies ahead.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Granted, we all will probably buy the manga in the end. It'll end up being more than a month in between the Viz scans once they release 24, then they'll be waiting for the volumes to get released in Japan, which takes about 3-4 months per volume depending on whether or not Inoue takes breaks.

Re: Vagabond Sumi and Water artbooks

Thanks a lot, man.

Hot damn, 38 bucks a pop for each book. Inoue's art is badass, but I don't know if I could buy both of these. Might just settle for purchasing "Water".

Again, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Sadly, I don't even think they're releasing vol. 24 until January.

I like VIZ's translations a lot, though. I actually understood the whole "Sokkatu" chapter in vol. 23 clearly after I read it, which is something I was left foggy on with the fan-scans.

Actually, I now remember reading Musashi's first encounter against the Yoshioka dojo, and remember thinking "Yeah, this definitely needs to be made into Anime."

Hmm, wow. I think that volume 3 was released in 2002, yet I still remember it nearly five years on.

Yeah, I didn't like my translation for that chapter either, but it was pretty convoluted speech to me.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I highly appreciate your work, and it's pretty much on par with the Viz translation for the most part. After all, you're not getting paid for this and you don't have a team of Japanese majors helping you translate either.

Re: Vagabond Sumi and Water artbooks

Good luck to you on that.

Even if I tried for a decade, I'd probably wouldn't even get close to being able to draw like Inoue - the man's an artistic genius.

By the way, if you've read Inoue's site lately, he's actually coming out with an entire DVD to teach you how to draw. You should check it out.

yeah, i read about the dvd and it definetly got me excited, i hope it has english subtitles though, or else i might need to learn Japanese.
if your interested in learning to draw give it a try. even though Inoue is an artistic genius there was a time when his drawings totally sucked to, he just kept at it till he got amazing.its all about how badly you want it.

Re: Vagabond Sumi and Water artbooks

My whole philosophy on talent is that you really need to be born with the potential. It's true that hard work and refining your talent is required, but it's something you need to be born with.

I know that I in particular do not have artistic talent, which really doesn't bother me, because my natural-born talent is geared in other directions. While I enjoy Inoue's art, attempting to duplicate it isn't something I could do very well or want to bother doing.

Inoue actually is doing the art of the game Lost Odyssey on Xbox 360. I was surprised when I found this out last week. I want to play the damn game, too. Too bad I'm not buying an X360.

Re: Vagabond Sumi and Water artbooks

natural born talent? i dont know about that. i have been drawing for a long time and for a long time i sucked hard. but i just kept at it. i think people naturally have something in them that needs some form of cultivation and some people do it through art, music, dance, writing, math, science, drugs. etc. we all will lean toward something but i dont think anyone has a clear advantage that cant be bridged with alittle hard work. unless the person is a savant, but then there is a sacrifice. savants cant function in day to day life. they may be able to compose a symphony at 7, but they cant brush their teeth.

what is your natural born talent if you dont mind me asking?

I am the Japanese major, heh. What I lack is a team of Japanese people to help explain the concepts on some of the more convoluted parts of the text.
