So what is this manga even about exactly? Never read it. I see it gets a lot of hype though. Super heroes I'm guessing?
It's about a superhero society where most people have superpowers that range from really mundane to pretty cool. People are not allowed to use their powers, except heroes, which is a legit profession. Those who use their powers and aren't heroes, are called villains. Heroes exist to take down villains in a safe and responsible manner and hand them over to law enforcement.
Though the idea of a superhuman society might sound awesome, the story opens with the phrase: People are not born equal.
The glamorous appearance of superhero society is actually a veil that hides a lot of ugliness, like inequality, poverty, discrimination, and general apathy. Why help someone when there are heroes who could do that? Unfortunately heroes only focus on flashy villains, not on tackling societal issues and small things like helping a lost kid. Most heroes are in it for money and fame, not altruism.
The story follows a powerless kid called Midoriya Izuku who is granted impossible power by the #1 hero All Might. It will eventually show us how he became the greatest hero. (And hopefully, leave the world a better place)
He attends the best hero school in the country, and though he's not very good at it at the start, slowly becomes stronger and more capable.
Meanwhile, Shigaraki Tomura is raised by All Might's arch enemy to become the greatest villain. He isn't very good at it at the start, but slowly becomes stronger and more capable.
Parallels? You don't say
It's very satisfying to see these characters grow and learn and gain a handle unimaginable power. And even if you don't like them very much at the start, there's a huge cast of colorful side characters to intrigue you.
