Ah, that makes sense. We have a couple of strong series at the moment so it's no wonder that there are a lot of anime adaptations. It still interests me that WSJ had a low point in the mid-2000s because it's hard to imagine now.
There seems to be a pattern: if there are a large number of established, popular series a larger number of new series are canceled. A lot of the popular series of the early 2000's ended in 2003 - 2005. Hikaru no Go, Yi-Gi-Oh, Rookies, Whistle, Shaman King, Black Cat, Ichigo 100%, and Buso Renkin all ended during that time. This opened up room for series like Death Note, Gintama, Reborn, D. Gray Man, Muhyo, and Neuro. With fewer series ending in 2006-2007 only To Love Ru, Mx0, and Sket Dance ran for two or more years.
The pattern was repeated in 2008-2009 when more established, popular series ended. Prince of Tennis, Mx0, Eyeshield, DGM, Muhyo, Neuro, and To Love Ru all ended. Most polled in the middle or bottom, but it opened a lot of space up for new series. The more established series end, the more new series have to survive, to take their place. Very few established series have ended in 2010-2011, so more new series are being canceled again.
