And it seems Bulge/Barrage really is coming to Alpha: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-05-26/shonen-jump-alpha-adds-kohei-horikoshi-barrage-manga

More reason to hope it suceeds I guess.
Makes sense. I mean what else were they going to do? Bakuman ended so they needed a replacement, Kenshin isn't going to last long, and they are trying to have every series in the mag be 2 weeks behind jump. Makes sense to add a new series and then if it fails they can add one from the next batch.

Battle of the Bulge sound be nice. Though if the protag is like Naruto at the beginning then I'm not reading it. After Luffy, Natsu and Naruto I'm kinda sick of dumb protagonists.

I do wish it was Beelzebub or Reborn considering Reborn sells the manga here.

I doubt Reborn...didn't VIZ cancel or suspend their publication of it because of lack of sales?

They're pushing it like they've pushed Toriko before. Hope it won't fail.

That's a really interesting move by them, licensing a brand new series from a barely established artist. Here's hoping it does well, because if so, it could mean more new series get licensed like this. Also, if it does well, it might get a print run.....Actually, how does WSJ Alpha know if a series does well? Do they have surveys to see which individual series is popular?

This is just my assumption, but maybe volume sales? if the series does well of course the volume sales will be soared.

Quick question : How does Jump rank a new series since it cannot be counted through -8 weeks rules?

But I don't think Barrage has been confirmed for a print run yet. I just assumed that since this is a brand new series even in Japan, they were just doing a digital only test run first.

I'm pretty sure the editors just place new series wherever they want until they are officially ranked.

Yes. I remember something about volume 17 being recalled because of mistranslations and such.

Bakuman isn't specific about a lot of things. Like they marked success in volumes by how many you got PRINTED rather than sold. And because it's from the perspective of mangakas. They get the poll results directly, and about a week after the issue has gone out. And they're only generally reflected in the TOC, plus color pages are unranked, and the like.

Likely to allow ample time for people to mail in their surveys. That gives a few weeks for all copies of a given issue to be sold out/taken down from shelves, and a few more weeks for the last of the surveys to trickle in, plus some time to compile all the data. It's not like they have a reason to rush things.

Except now that we're in the digital age, the votes can and SHOULD be done and counted instantly. Which is why it's absolutely ridiculous to keep this outdated system.

lulz. Fight the power! Don't let the man keep a good manga down. Though, I imagine the eight week delay bothers you a hell of a lot more than it bothers Shueisha.

I do not think you understood what Krono was saying. It is essential to Shueisha that a specific number of postcards are returned per issue, the number returned must reflect a specific percentage of total circulation in order to accurately reflect the reading habits of the entire readership. The higher the number of postcards returned, the lower the margin of error when assessing the accuracy of the weekly survey. Shueisha will periodically set a confidence interval, the number of postcards returned must meet that confidence interval in order for the survey to be deemed statistically valid. The earlier the survey period is ended the less likely it is for Jump to meet or exceed the desired confidence interval. Results could never be completed instantly, that would not allow enough time for the desired number of surveys to be returned. Nor would it allow for the number of postcards returned to exceed the desired amount, something which Shueisha must hope for every week. Digital surveys would speed up the counting process, but would not speed up the collection process.

More importantly, the surveys can not go digital until Jump goes digital, something Shueisha has been resisting tooth and nail. The idea behind the postcards is to poll paying customers, not random web surfers. If the polls were open to all, Shueisha would have to account for a larger number of voters who do not read the magazine, raising the margin of error.

I think there are way that only people who pay can have access to a numeric poll especially if numeric takes more and more place in the future
but I agree that there needs to be a delay, the 8 weeks is more empirical than a process set in marble anyway.

I think the main reason why Balge is being given a test run in Jump Alpha and not, say, Reborn and Beelzebub is because there's less risk involved. Plus, I can imagine conservative people throwing a fuss on Baby Beel's nakedness, which is unfortunate. And Reborn was cancelled, I can't imagine Viz restarting it at all.

Ok, I have a question to ask: Do you guys think the return of the romance/harem manga in Jump has to do with Jump's older readership, or is it a recognition of the magazine's prominent female readership?

I personally think its a side-effect of Jump's readership being older than it used to be. There is nothing about the romance series currently serialized Jump that target the female readers. But I'm interested in hearing your opinions. :amuse

Yeah I'd definitely say it's the growing older readership. Especially considering others like Haikyu, which tend to appeal more to older readers, are starting to stick around longer.
