True, and one can argue most sports series have very few female characters as well. I think its a really personal preference how many and how prominent the female characters are in Jump. I mean, you could also have an arguement about which is better: lots of female characters that primarily act as fanservice, or few female characters that are equally developed as the male characters.

I think its interesting that in the manga/anime industry, having loads of female characters doesn't automatically make the franchise geared towards women, and vice versa. Having a cast of mostly bishonen male characters can cater both to men and women. I mean, generally, having or not having a heroine shouldn't make much of a difference in how good the manga is (after all, it could still attract a large yaoi fanbase). But, it definitely bothers me, and personally I avoid titles that don't have at least one main female character.

Everything seems to depend on the intended audience. In a series with a large fujoshi audience, women get in the way of the shipping. Early on the girls in Naruto and Reborn played prominent roles. As time passed and the fujoshi audience grew, Sakura's role diminished, as did Kyoko and Haru's in Reborn. Series like One Piece or Beelzebub continue to prominently feature female characters, even if in a supporting role. Toriko is at least in part a tribute to the ultra-macho action manga of the 80's, I think that is why women are kept to a minimum.

I hate bringing women into power level discussions. I don't care how weak or strong Nami is in comparison to Luffy or Zoro, she's an awesome character. The worth of a character should be determined by how much he or she contributes to the story, not how many bad guys they pwn. Sakura fails because she has now has virtually no role at all, where she was once one of the main characters. It's not that she doesn't get to fight, it's that she is no longer even a prominent character.

I don't think in the case of One Piece or Naruto it is a matter of gender. Oda has always been very careful to give an important and balanced role to everyone in the crew. The Strawhats are not just the captain but a group. Even during the separation, he brilliantly made reappear old characters during the Impel Down arc and used the cover to display the other crew members plot.
As for Naruto, it seems to me the more Masashi added characters, the more everything relied on Naruto alone, diminishing the importance of the initial ones.
That's partly one of the big reason why I love one piece whether I'm not really found of Naruto

Assassination Classroom absolutely destroyed every other new series when it came to chapter 1 search hits. The only series that was even close was Nisekoi.

Sensei no Bulge still continues to flounder at the bottom.

I have always thouhgt of Naruto and ONE PIECE as total opposites..
I really, really liked NARUTO but it always felt too.. centered, well I suppose thats a thing most mangas can't avoid.
What I mean is that we pretty much know the world of Naruto since the beginning of the series whilst I haven't seen a whole map of the ONE PIECE world (there isn't.. at least not for now, right Nami?)
And everything is centered around Naruto.. And Sasuke, its like Naruto is constricting while ONE PIECE is alwayyyys expanding, at first everything was about Luffy.. the very first chapters then he meets Coby and Zoro, Coby leaves and you don't get to see him [SPOILERS] for a couple of .. 300 or so chapters?[/SPOILERS] and the wolrd expands whilst in Naruto and especially after time skip it has been a very dull read, sure it has had good moments but everything feels IMO very constricted..
This zombie arc proves it, reusing death people.. Cool but its just too poor.

As for the first topic, woman on JUMP manga, I can't recall a single sport manga (JUMP or not JUMP) without a girl manager/club member/cheerleader/fanatic the closest its Prince of Tennis. And you can see the author wanted to have at least some female cahracters, even if they weren't that important (and the author couldn't draw them that well) the pair of Seigaku cheerleaders and the coach, the interviewer of the Tennis magazine and if possible adding a little girl for the opposing team.. and btw they totally ditched women in the sequel.. But that's because everyone knows PoT fans are mostly fujoshi so the demography doesn't care about women, not that Konomi's women were anything spectacular.

Well Toriko style as mentioned is kinda 80s so maybe that's why the author just ditched fan-service altogether and focused on making a macho-esque manga.

I'm not sure about the bolded part. I mean, I understand it and have witnessed it myself (hi there, D.Gray-man fandom!), but there are a lot of examples in Shonen Jump that indicate the fujoshi fandom give no fucks either way. The only manga I can see not attracting a fujoshi fanbase that have prominent female characters are Medaka, Momiji, Pajama, and Nisekoi, and that's because they all emphasis the hero's relationship with other women, not men. Bakuman's fujoshi fandom was quite active despite one hero being married and the other engaged. Beelzebub has a large fujoshi fandom too, and its been focusing on its female characters more than before. Gintama, One Piece, and Sket Dance all have consistently developed female characters but also have a lively fujoshi fanbase. I don't think having female characters reflects on how strong the yaoi-shipping is, but if they are poorly developed then they reflect on the whole manga.

Agreed. Though its still disappointing if the male characters are by default expected to kick ass while the female characters by default don't get the same opportunity. I mean, it wouldn't be terrible to wish for a gender-balanced cast, in any shonen, would it?

Don't school-like manga often have a balanced ratio of f:m? Angel Densetsu, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, ST&RS, Soul Eater, Beelze, GTO.

There's only a few female characters in toriko and when they are none of them is attractive. Mostly old, murderous (my profile pic), serious-looking or not pleasing to the eye.

Chiyo - murderous old granny
Rin - tomboy-looks
Setsuno - granny
nono - plain girl
tsurara mama - geisha like chef
love - looks like a bee(she can charm with her sexy pheromone to seduce)
melk 2 - probably most feminine
malisman - serious strict looking

Did anyone notice that the Shonen Jump Countdown with the "D" has changed a bit. It's got like a blurry dragon in the background now. Kind of looks like Shenron. I wonder if they talked Toriyama into doing Dragonball again?

I'm not sure it's Shenron, but it definitely looks like a dragon.

Oh...well that's disappointing. I'm not really a big fan of Dragonball in the first place, but a new manga series would have been more interesting to me.

I was going to say that the dragon reminded me of Blue Eyes White Dragon more than Shenron though.

It seems like it will be set sometime during the Buu arc because Goten and kid Trunks are featured on the promo.
