He wrote "I want to work seriously on the movie for December, and the various anime plans, original stories, and everything for the end of the year." Original stories is just a general term, could be for his manga or something else.

Generally, the TOC comments are boring and pointless, like celebrity tweets. It's not really worth translating all that text

Shonen Jump Alpha Adds Blue Exorcist, Takama-ga-hara Manga

The North American manga and anime distributor Viz Media announced at its Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha panel at San Diego Comic Con on Sunday that Kazue Katō's Blue Exorcist manga series and Jūzō Kawai's Takama-ga-hara manga series will join the lineup of its digital anthology Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha. Takama-ga-hara will run weekly in the digital anthology starting on July 23.
Looks like they will add more recently started manga to their lineup but I wonder why it's Takamagahara. Looked like the least impressive series to me. Not surprised to see Ao no Exorcist though.

Assumedly, a series that has just started is really cheap to license. Which is why they're adding those, merely because of the low-risk.

Agreed that it's low-risk, but that's still embarrassing. Takamagahara is one of the worst new series in years.

Blue Exorcist is some good news, though.

*Obligatory question mark as to why Beelzebub hasn't been added to Jump Alpha*

But honestly, this is what Jump USA should have done. I'm happy that they are coming to grips and improving their online model. Though wait a second, why Bulge and now Takamagahara, when Momiji got serialized recently as well? I feel that Jump USA is playing it safe and not want to publish any remotely fanservicey manga. Which is dumb, its not like any of the romance manga running in Jump are particularly controversial.

How come so many people comment on business issues, without any understanding of business practice? I guess everyone on the internet is an expert.

Of course it was obvious that adding new series to Jump Alpha was not a distinction. The only cost to VIZ is paying the translator. They have no obligation to actually print or ship books, where real cost is incurred. If the series is canceled in Japan it can just as easily be canceled on Alpha without any real monetary loss.

From being involved in the site, you can probably see the difference in popularity between fantasy/action and everything else. There seems to be a strong bias towards manga that fall into more stereotypical American "comic book" genres, away from genres unique to manga. Alpha is a mere reflection of fan bias, choosing new action, rather than romance or harem. Past attempts by VIZ to bring non-action manga to English speaking readers have met with middling results, at best. Ichigo 100%, I"S, Pretty Face, and even Eyeshield were never very popular in bookstores.

Then the first part her question remains. Beelzebub fits in the fantasy/action category plus it has already proved its success in Japan, it is quite successful in France (best shonen 2012 for manga-news). So it would make more sense to spend money on a translation of a serie with potential than one which has high risk to be cancelled. I'm not sure the genre explains everything here.
I guess they don't want to start an unpublished serie in the middle.

Genre should completely explain why Momiji was not added. In all the years they have been licensing manga, VIZ has never had a popular shounen romance title. With sales declining yearly, now is not the time and Momiji is not the title, to push for a breakthrough that alluded VIZ when manga sales were at their peak. It would be a fallacy to assume that Beelzebub is unlicensed for the same reason Momiji is unlicensed. Genre may have no bearing on the decision not to license Beelzebub, while still being the primary reason Momiji (and Pajama, and Nisekoi) remain unlicensed. Assuming that the licensing of Bulge and Takamagahara have anything to do with the Beelzebub would also be a fallacy. The terms for adding a longer series, such as Beelzebub, could be less favorable than adding new series.

Alpha is a pay service, 99¢ an issue or $25.95 per year. Assume that the cost to translate a title is fully covered by subscriber fees. Without the need to print and ship books, adding new manga is of little cost to VIZ.

Me thinks one of the main characters being a naked baby might have something to do with it not being released on Alpha. Also being like dunno how much chapters long (and not having the prior hundreds of chapters released because unlike BLEACH or Nura, Beelze doesn´t have a physical release in the US).

It's a damned naked baby. How frightened can the editors be of a small group of prude people..., as Kaiten mentioned, it might more have something to do it being a "long" series already. Wouldn't releasing it as volumes produce much more profit? Make a test/poll and start a low run print.

True, and I suppose this is just something I'll never understand about the American rating system either (or most rating systems for that matter). Another thing I realized is that in the U.S., romance series are catered towards girls and women -- a love story catered towards men doesn't really fit a marketing genre, I suppose.

Another thing your comment highlights is how the U.S. comic industry understands and fulfills fanservice differently than manga and anime does. I suppose that's a discussion for another thread, though.

Its nice to see so many take interest in why Beelzebub hasn't been published, but I suspect it has more to do with translating and localizing the humor than the naked baby. I mean, Gintama's translation and localization were excellent, but it still got canned. I can't think its just because of the naked baby. =/

The Shonen Jump Facebook page translate them every week

http://www.facebook.com/shonenjump.com.portal
They only translate author comments from licensed series. :P So no Gintama, Nisekoi, Beelzebub, etc.

This Weeks Search Hits on Google

- Assassination Classroom is once again first

- Sensei no Bulge is last for its fourth week straight

- Takamagahara has the lowest amount of search hits recorded in its opening week than any other series has had in a very long time. Even Pakki did a lot more than this.

The guy that makes the chart keeps them on there even after they end for a few weeks. I don't know why but he just does >.>

They are Jump series after all, seeing how the fanbase reacts afterwards could be of help for some statistic. Did the "real" last chapter of Mago come out already?
