Honest question, what is the correct definition of a "success"? Is Spring Weapon a success?
I would define it as an exception to the rule similar to Isobee since its close to a year in serialization.

A proper success to me for the most part is something that gets an anime adaptation, essentially something that doesn't get cancelled in the first two years. There are exceptions of course (Zumou is well into year 4 with no anime in sight) but getting animated I think is a good marker of something being a success.

I'd say Spring Weapon at this point is most likely to be an almost success on the level of stuff like Magico, Kurogane, and Dance Club. It does still get the occasional higher rank but in most recent issues it's only held up by the instant flops, and something with as low volume sales as Spring Weapon won't survive like that for long.

I feel like Spring Weapon's just been really extraordinarily lucky with timing rather than actually being a successful series so far.

Vigilante latest chapter have done something very interesting, which is introducing the number 1 hero in the U.S.

Academia having 2 spinoffs really helps keep you invested in the world during hiatuses

it's really weird that World Trigger never got a spinoff despite having a huge world(s) and super large cast

Jump had no problem giving 2 spinoff to the less popular Twin Star Exorcists
heck, even Saiki, Zumou, Black Clover got light novels, but WT gets nothing?

Maybe you didn't notice, but when World Trigger was starting to get popular enough to get LN and spin-off, it go on hiatus and never came back.

And? Spin-offs aren't done by the original mangaka. A spin-off would be a good way to ease the pain of the hiatus too.

Spin-offs are made to promote the main series as well. It is hard to make one for a non-existent series.

It is also made to be an EXTRA (emphasis in extra) profit, not the main profit.

It depends on the author though, some really don't like the idea of someone else handling their universe. Just look at One Piece, it's the most popular manga in the world and has tons and tons of potential for full Magi-Sinbad-esque spin-offs about different crew's journeys but all its had are a couple gag-manga. Maybe Ashihara is the type who wants the world he's created to be entirely his own to build.

I'm not very WT fan. I think it's too "strategy>ranking> strategy> ranking". It is as if the characters were programmed machines. So it would be cool to see a spin-off more focused on drama. A good way to keep the series alive.

Oda has a good reason for that, he can actually use anything in the world of One Piece at any moment because of how intricate the story is, he goes back and forth with things we don't even realize. World Trigger has the same characteristics?

Oda did let someone else writes some of OP movies so maybe we will get a decent spinoff someday
How did Ashihara reacted Toei fillers? did it bother him or not? does anyone know? if he was cool with it he will be cool with a spinoff

speaking of movies, I want a new franchise to get an animated movie, what was the last (non Naruto, OP, DBZ) manga to get a movie? KnB? that's not so new either
I think Hq and OPM are good candidates for getting a theater movie

Golem Heart is a manga about a Golem with a heart right? :derp /s

It is similar to the Neverland duo one shot. Only thing stood out from that one shot is Meliodas looking MC, damsel in distress, rich arrogant mofos. I don't remember his ability, is it controlling golem? Hope he finds success.

I think I'd draw the line for a success in Jump at Psyren.

I'm expecting SW1 to get axed in this round. Unless its sales are somehow 90% digital, I don't see it getting anything for its anniversary.

It didn't place on any box office site.

SW1 won't get axed. Gonna be Marie, Cross Account, Shuudan.
Sometimes it feels like people just pick series at random when discussing what they think will be axed.

For me, success is defined differently for rookies and veterans. For a rookie, I would consider a year of serialization a success with at least a 30k per volume sales. For veterans (especially returning veterans), 100 chapters and at least 70k per volume.

Maybe this is considered success in Sunday or Magazine, but not in Jump.

Eh, I didn't want to make the veteran threshold too high, although maybe a 100k sales is a better number.

I stand by the rookie threshold though. Just being able to survive past the initial 12-20 chapter axe length is good in such a competitive magazine. 50 chapters is enough to get the mangaka's name out there and could possibly give them another chance to return with a better manga with greater success.

In 2005-2009, 65% of new series were cancelled before 50 chapters.
In 2010-2014, 70% of new series were cancelled before 50 chapters.
In 2015-2017, 60% of new series were cancelled before 50 chapters.

Not making it to 100 chapters seems to be the fourth element that unites the majority of manga in this magazine.

I consider success anything over 75 chapters. It's enough to get someone's name out there, and if a series survived that long, it's almost always worth reading in my experience. Though obviously if it's their third serial, they'll want sales too, but for someone with remaining attempts, it's definitely enough.
