I understand that but even Dragonball, which is apart of most peoples childhoods, still went away after it's end until here recently excluding the occasional movie and game.
I know that Naruto is considered a big money maker but why continue it after the main series had a somewhat okay ending to it, and most of the fans that I know have been saying that it should just end and not bother with the Next Generation thing. You know a series is been going to long when it's fans are saying that it should've ended already.

You do realize that Dragon Ball GT began only a month after the Dragon Ball Z anime ended, right? It didn't just go away right away and neither will Naruto.

Plus, I imagine if GT had been more successful we'd have seen a lot more spinoffs afterwards ala the Yugioh franchise whose first spinoff started airing a week after the DM anime ended.
Never really saw the true reason people disliked GT. This forum is really my first internet forum ever but I even knew of it's dislike compared to DBZ. I thought it was cool, Baby isn't the most interesting villain but Omega Shernon was lit >>>. Pan was good as a main character imo. Trunks is Trunks, always good to see.
I think GT works if it's a stand alone side story with no connection the the other series. But for some reason it doesn't feel like it has the heart of the original series.
To me it had good ideas, but watching them just felt eeeh.
Part of the issue with GT is that it does have a lot of good ideas in it but none of them are executed well. Take the Shadow Dragons for example, the concept behind them is great (the dragon balls became corrupted by the gang's constant abuse of them over the years) but most of the enemies were total jokes and the one that was an actual threat had all the personality of an early movie villain.
GT was pretty much like what Super is now... Fillers inside of fillers made only to squeeze money from a successfull manga and destroy it in the meantime.

GT was was more successful than it's preceding two series.(sales wise)
Dragon Ball (1986) -> Avg sales of 14,121 copies-> Re-Releases of 9,070 copies -> Total copies sold = 23,191
Dragon Ball Z (1989) -> Avg Sales of 18,584 copies -> Re-Releases of 21,887 copies -> Total copies sold = 40,471
Dragon Ball GT (1996) -> Avg Sales of 31,696 copies -> Re-Releases sales of 21,227 copes -> Total Copies Sold = 52,923
Not sure why we didn't get more spinoffs though.
Not sure how Dragon Ball Super sells (most likely just relies on TV ratings but OP still sells well)...I hope that One piece/Dragon Ball get moved to a later time slot. One Piece was better when it wasn't airing in the morning (less censorship and was a bit darker). Chances of that are low but I wish it could happen.
DBZ/GT looked far more serious since they weren't airing in the morning (and better).

If those are VHS sales then they are not really a good indicator of how successful the series was as back then rental VHS was a huge thing. Companies would make back huge amounts from rental stores. TV ratings would probably be a better indicator as we didn't have to worry about streaming and if you wanted to re-watch a series its through VHS or rental.

GT as a whole is just a series of missed opportunities and bad ideas being packaged into 64 episodes brought to you incompetently by Toei Animation (which honestly can describe Super at the moment but we'll get to that another time). Conceptually its solid, a throwback to the early days of Dragonball by having Goku, Trunks and Pan go into space to locate the "Black-Star Dragonballs" with an added touch of the scifi elements that "Z" brought to the table, so what could go wrong? Everything. The Baby arc is the best one of the lot and the only one I feel would fit into the original's style and structure, after that was the Super 17 arc which was.....lame and then you have Dark Shenron arc which was a return to the Monster of the Week format only with some of the worse villians in the franchise design and concept wise with an anti-climatic finish that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. That being said GT did have some good things about it, the music is among the best in the franchise, the first half is very reminiscent of early Dragonball in terms of style and humor and this was essentially before it became more of a means for unfunny filler like how every new installment since the Jump Fest OVA in 2008 has done it, animation was a hell of a lot more consistent than Super (but then again Toei wasn't garbage back then), and man that final credit sequence in the last episode always bring a tear to my eye since it was pretty much the last canonical animated series in the Dragonball timeline (which will always be the case until Toei actually decides to do something beyond the gap in-between the end of the Buu Saga and Goku leaving to train Uub) and the music, narration and Goku's farewell just sells it as being more melancholy than anything Dragonball could make it. So yeah while GT is a mess I feel that it more so is exemplifies the problems with the franchise as whole then anything specific with that installment so fans treat it as a punching bag even though its not like the franchise has learned from its mistakes even now.

Good post fam, I agree with most of this if not all. Baby Vegeta was epic when I remember watching it but I just didn't like him compared to other villains in Dragon Ball, but it's more of a personal dislike. Him being able to steal bodies made him powerful so that arc was the best. Like tirakai said, the Shadow Dragons and Goku and crew having to go to galaxy to galaxy (or was it planet to planet?) to find them was a great concept but the actual dragons were goofy as shit and fodder. Except for Omega and Nuova. Best ones. SS4 was introduced which was great but to be honest I think it simply wasn't as memorable as its predecessor in Dragon Ball and DBZ. It was more comedial and lighter in a way, which might of been why it turned off people. Super 17 arc was lame I can agree with that but again cool concept, Super 17 being cool smoothed it over for me. It was alot of "cool concepts" that I guess didn't materialize for the best. Uub screentime was great and correct me if I'm wrong but at the end didn't they show Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr fight at the World Tourney when Pan was a granny? That was the canonical part you mentioned? That scene was dope.

Speaking canon about Dragonball at this point where the franchise is in the midst of a resurgence is a taboo because there's much confusion over Toriyama canon vs Toei canon especially with the former overseeing scripts and there being a manga running alongside the anime. GT's canon is up in the air as of now with the introduction of Gods and the apparent fact that Super Saiyan God 2 is stronger than Super Saiyan 4 but given how Toei has no shame in retconing the shit out of everything in Dragonball (Trunks, Goten and Marron's ages, the potara earrings etc.) it really doesn't matter but yeah before Battle of Gods that was the canonical animated end of Dragonball and more specifically the final walk sequence with Goku before he rides off in Nimbus.
