Seems to be more a case of them severely underestimating it rather than it selling tonnes. Don't know if those numbers posted before are real or not, but 20k is pretty pathetic. Guess they fully believed it would flop, but it's actually doing decent, so they're having to print so much more. Even so, it would be difficult to break into the charts on it's third week, regardless of how well it's doing.

On the topic of HM, RxL and Stone. I'm thinking 15-20 for HM, 25-30 for Stone, and 30-50 for RxL.
I think you are talking about when it appeared on Oricon in its first week. It was 20k in 2 days! It is not pathetic, it is impressive!

Even when there is reprints, the series doesn't come back to the top 50, it is always like that.

2-3 days happen all the time. By Shounen Jump standards of new series, that's descent at best. "Impressive" is an exaggeration.

Are you comparing with what? One Piece? It has been better than Hinomaru Zumou (we saw in shoseki ranking), Black Clover and Kimetsu no Yaiba also didn't start that well. 20k in 2 days is very good for a first volume. It is surpassing 50k+ by now.

Here's what I translated previously from data in this site

WNL is at 16k in 3 days.
FYI, Hinomaru v1 was 19k in 4 days.

It's not a bad sale at all but hardly anything noteworthy.

HZ sold more than KnY with vol.1? :O

I read the first 12 or so chapter of HZ. I must say...I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality.

HZ is one of my favourite sports manga. It's very good. I'm sad that it probably won't get an anime.

It's interesting to see Double Arts and Nisekoi so close on first week sales. Naoshi seems a very balanced mangaka for that matter.

HZ can't even get an OVA?

It could be selling a lot if production IG gets it. They can handle sports series well and looking at Haikyuu's boost in sales after it's anime is amazing. HQ vol. 1 sold 30kish in it's first week lol.

Haikyuu grew to selling 166k in 7 days by volume 5.

Sumou has yet to grow to that level even at volume 15. I definitely think an OVA is possible but looking at it purely in terms of an investment, producers can't really convince investors that it will bring about even a little profit. Even if you pair it up with Sumo organizations, sumo fans aren't necessarily anime fans and the reverse is also true.

Kind of pointless to compare HZ to Haikyuu, since Haikyuu has always been a huge hit for the magazine. if anything, sumo organisations will gladly chip in to help make sumo become more relevant with younger audiences.
To get more popular with younger audiences,in the case of an anime, the best bet is to put it in either a morning timeslot or evening timeslot. Just from this article: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2016-12-14/.109884 you'll see that very few sumo anime have even been made. Putting it in during the day means that the amount of money required to buy the timeslot becomes huge as those slots usually air all over japan as opposed to late night series that air mostly in Tokyo. Its mostly a question as to whether companies want to take that huge risk.

I think Hinomaru will get an anime for sure, it's just taking a while.
The manga will end soon... Very hard to receive an anime under these circumstances.

Absolutely disgusting. Whoever designed it should be fired.

I know. That's unfortunate. I hope it gets one still.

Ik. I wasn't expecting the same sales as HQ obviously. Just pointing out that it could give it a big boost.

Would be fine without the stone texture surrounding it. It completely clashes with the 2D art
