I also know that Shimabukuro is better than this, although still far from Oda.
Oda is better because he's allowed free reign without any consequence. He has no constraints or worries at all when it comes to making a concise story.

Toriko is the only other series I've encountered that even begins to have the same level of world building that One Piece has, and Shima did it with a fraction of the chapters.

Toriko's world building also had far more potential before it was cut short prematurely. There was still literally UNIVERSES of content left.

*sigh*

Fucking Japan, I swear.

He earned the spot as the greatest of all time, even so he doesn't relax even a single bit in his story making the best every time and even sleeping 2 hours a day even when he is already a millionaire and could live his entire life only with the money One Piece gives to him in merchandise, not to mention what he already saved. He has passion and love for his work more than anything else, One Piece is his life, blood, oxygen. Don't talk about Eichiro Oda as if he didn't deserve what he has and he takes everything for granted because he doesn't. If you respect Shimabukuro so much you should have read his oneshot more carefully because I think you didn't understand how genius of a generation Oda is.

World building is not a required characteristic for all series, Toriko and One Piece have this characteristic because they are very adventurous, but other series are fine without that. Doing a quick recollection I would say that Magi has a better world building than Toriko by far. Toriko had a vast world, but there weren't many connections between the concepts like One Piece has, Oda goes back and forth with his story, recollecting and using things from the far past. The so called world building in Toriko for me was the number of monsters he created, which would give Pokémon the award of best world building of all time. People didn't take Toriko seriously because it was too exaggerated, like, the readers are very permissive because, you know, everything could happen in that series.
And you forget about Dragon Ball, which also had universes to explore. Every series has the potential to go on and on infinitely, but do it and do it with quality are two completely different matters. Toriko was already a mess and ended very badly, I think it was about time.

I think you've should of read Toriko more carefully. It definitely had a lot of world building and it wasn't all about the number of monsters he created; it also had many connections. Exploring these wacky worlds which were explained through science or about the history of the Nitro/Neo/Acacia/Planet had a ton of world building. The last chapter, also had a lot of world building. Magi's world building is inferior to Toriko's. Although I dropped Magi a bit after the TS since that manga just went downhill.

@bold
So does Shimabu with Toriko, does he not? His story had a ton of subtle foreshadowing; much like how Oda would do it. Toriko wasn't a mess till that Another arc and after that it got rushed really hard which was obvious since a lot of series were ending that year. Actually, Toriko is one of the few series that ended well; what are you on about? It never ended badly; only to the eyes of some readers that were delusional enough to think Shimabu would be able to explore like 6 multiverses or get a space act. That's just ridiculous and too much.

I definitely find One Piece superior but I think you're underestimating Toriko.

I agree with you for the most part, but what you said about the hypothetical space arc irks me. I think many readers were expecting a space arc since it was mentioned that the construction of a space travel ship (or something like that) was completed. Even the final page hinted at a space arc with the whole "and the adventure continues in space!" thing. It also explains the sudden massive escalation of the scale of techniques used during the final battle.

Just an example but Toriko's connections were so much better than anything else I've read.
Chapter 146 - the surprise apples can be cooked by scaring them
Chapter 267 - the billion bird can lay eggs the same way, except their chef discovers a different method
Chapter 393 - the big bad backstory is the first concept, his final resolution was the second
It was bizarre how subtle the themes and setting came through.

Yup, doesn't seem like we'll have to worry about the animation department. All that's left is the voice acting, hopefully we see some voice acting in the coming weeks. Asta's voice especially will be critical.

"From the team that bought you Twin Start Exorcists"

Yeh might want to erase that bit. That shitfest isn't something you should be using to try and impress people.

Huh. Looking at the results, that's not as many total votes as I expected. For some reason when I saw "9000 total", I thought it was a good number. Only the first two have over 1k votes.

I'm really surprised that Asta is first place, expected him to be second or third, with Yuno being right below him. Yami's placement was to be expected, but I personally somewhat expected and preferred him to be in first. I also expected Vanessa to be higher considering the several chapters she had dedicated to her.

I find it funny that a bird that has very little panel time or interaction, or anything really, was able to come out in 5th place. Really speaks for itself. Mascot merch incoming.

Torikos worldbuilding was almost like OPs only difference was is things and weird occurrences werr more explained via science.(manga science) and/or gourmet cells

I will say OP has better worldbuild tho.

Nonetheless both r great. both authors have made huge worlds full of life.

Being a OP fan. Im bias so i like OPs world more.

OPs world more unpredictable than Toriko. Torikos is very Food centric/gourmet centered so u know everything around the corner is food related and such.

OP world even tho in a pirate age is not pirate centric. And there r other things beside pirates

hell u got a mini Toriko world in OP with - Tontoland, brocoli island and the countries Big Mom got the ingredients from to make the cake

To be completely fair, One Piece World Building is so good is because of the unique people that inhabit the island. The second thing is Oda was able to make real life island and turn it into one of his island (Zou, Raijin Island). Some of the unique islands are not NEW/Original concept.

Some notable examples:

Skypiea, Tottoland, FIshman Island/Ryugu Kingdom, Punk Hazard and Zou to some extent.

Way, way too early to judge Black Clover's animation. It's just a 30sec PV. Speaking of the poll; at least Yuno didn't place first.

I don't think leo understood my point, so allow me to reiterate. I'm not saying One Piece doesn't deserve it's success. I'm saying because of it's success, Oda is given complete control over what he's allowed to write, and for how long he's allowed to write it. No one is pressuring Oda to hurry AT ALL. If he wanted to write 100 chapters on a side character on an island completely unrelated to the current plot HE COULD and no one would say anything to him.

Other mangaka are not allowed that sort of artistic freedom. Shima had to make sacrifices left and right in his story, like having to completely skip out on showing the acquisition on some of Acacia's Full Course dishes, all so he could fit the conclusion of the series in X amount of chapters. Jump gave him a deadline. No one gives Oda deadlines EVER.

So while it's true that One Piece has the best world building of any manga, just remember that Oda is allowed to fully flesh out his world to a degree that other mangaka would not be able to. It's the best because it's allowed to be the best.
