Shounen sports series typically have cool looking male characters with hot blooded, intense, passionate rivalries. Fujos like to attribute a false sense of homoerotic tension to those things. There's not much "hot-blooded" themes in should manga. The female audience for shounen sports manga and should/josei manga are different.
Generally I agree but YoI and Free was popular and succesfull as anime and nobody really tried to translete this success into manga. Most shoujo sport manga I read was hetero romance manga and sport was marginal. Shounen can have false sense of homoerotic tension because shounen magazine male readers are more important. For me it is strange that neither shonen, seinen, josei, shoujo magazine try to capitalize Free and Yoi success in manga format.

13th Sabito
14th Urokodaki-san
15th Shinazugawa (the wind pillar)

17th Yushiro
18th Tamayo-sama
19th Chun-taro (zen's Sparrow)
20th Kyogai (that writer wannabe Oni )

Pig Assault wasn't enough to crash the top three. Maybe next time.

Really nice list anyway. I don't think I have ever seen the main villain and the author to rank as high in these kind of things.

I cheked few chapters of this manga some time ago but dropped. In my opinion this manga had huge potential but boys were fat and ugly so not much interest was generated from fangirls and 30k club. If this same manga had handsome male chracter it would be more popular.

The poll tickets were only with jump #24 issue (chap 61) and #25 jump+ issue (chap 62). So in two weeks it got over 26k votes.

Have we ever seen a WSJ battle shounen poll have half of the top 10 be girls before? Or even more than 3/10?

Not a lot of the characters are fat? It's the sport being about Sumo that isn't why it's really popular. It has everything (excellent characters/fights) and it desperately needs an anime to show great sumo can be.

The level of female protagonism in Shokugeki no Soma is the highest in the magazine putting the romances, which will obviously have more focus on the girls, aside and people still complain about it and they were all talk about lack of this in the magazine not so long ago. Shokugeki no Soma is a series where girls actually can be strong without seeming unnatural because it is all about skills.
The waifu aspect exists in every manga, I have waifus in all of them. XD
In popularity polls I would vote for Uraraka or Toga in My Hero Academia (the male characters are weak, to be honest, so I have plenty of reasons), for example. One Piece would be an exception, I would vote for Luffy although Vivi would have a strong case.

Niche sport can be successful but typical sumo player is unatractive for girls so 30k club.
Are golf, cycling, swimming more popular in Japan? I seriously don't know.

With this many votes in such a short amount of time it certainly proves that people are invested in the characters. But with these numbers compared to the volumes sold you'd think that the manga should be able to sell more or at the very least have a greater online presence.

Compare that to Assassination Classrooms voting number which seems paltry by comparison on the other hand has impressive volume sales.

Is there any real difference between the old and new voting systems?

Its online presence is huge on Twitter.

2chan presence is pretty big too.

Tweets from its official account regularly get over 1k retweets/likes, the tweet of Vol 8's cover for example:

Kuroko and Haikyuu are the most recent examples of them capitalizing on this big female audience in sports series. They've been capitalizing on the female audience since the early 2000s with Prince of Tennis and the like. Prince of Tennis' generation was generally believed to be the beginning of "Bishounen Jump". Both Kuroko and Haikyuu did similar amounts to Free in BD sales but YOI is an anomaly. It definitely had that "homoerotic tension" that some groups of readers will see between male characters but it went even further and made it legit. Jump is now starting Full Drive, which looks to at least continue in that category of bishounen characters. It can even be argued that without bishounen/cute boy characters, Jump series simply cannot take off anymore. It may possibly be the reason why Sumou didn't take off despite having a great story, though there may be other factors involved there.

In general though, most sports series have designs that appeal to female characters because its almost become norm to appeal to them. These series definitely have male fans, but the female audience seems to outdo the male audience. The actual type of sport is almost secondary. Yowamushi pedal is about cycling and now we have golf (Robo) in Jump. These aren't particularly popular sports in manga in general but one (cycling) has become a big mainstay in recent sports manga and the other (golf) seems to also be doing well and has a bright future if its able to keep up its rankings and sales.

Its the same voting system but bare in mind that not everyone who reads the manga will participate in the polls. Case in point the last two One Piece polls had entries you can only use if you bought the volumes so out of the 3 million or so who regularly buy One Piece only 80,000 participated in the polls. Usually poll participation has more to do with how dedicated the following of the source of material is as oppose to how popular it is also the nature of the polls is also a factor Prince of Tennis didn't get many participates in character polls but got a HUGE influx of participates for the Valentine polls.

I'm surprised it hasn't but yeah there's only like a few characters with any presence in the whole thing.
