Shueisha Launches Free Global MANGA Plus App
Shueisha launched a new online manga site and app named MANGA Plus in English on Monday worldwide, except in Japan, China, and South Korea. (These countries already have their own services.) A Spanish version of the service is planned for launch sometime between February and March.
The service will have a total of 50 titles, with 13 completed series (additional titles will be added gradually). The service will publish new chapters of currently serialized manga from Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump Square, and Shonen Jump+ at the same time they are released in Japan. While the service is free to download and use, users can also purchase compiled book volumes for specific manga. The first chapter and the latest chapter of currently serialized manga will also be free. A portion of the revenue from advertisements on the website will go directly to the manga authors.
Viz recently launched its Shonen Jump website in December, which similarly offers simultaneous publishing of serialized manga, as well as catalog manga. In an interview with ANN, Shonen Jump+ editor Shuhei Hosono stated the difference between the two services: worldwide availability (Viz Media's service is only available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore, and India), the availability of titles outside of the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and the addition of some titles that have never had an English release.
