But the way it works is that they keep getting hired to do more episodes, right? So Pierrot might choose where to place filler and whether to even do that or go the One Piece route, but if the contract says they have to keep putting out one episode every week even if they're extremely close to the manga, then it's not really just their decision. At the very least they can't just take a break of their own volition.
Again, its very possible for a studio to just state they will take a break since its theirs and the network's budget. Gintama has done this multiple times despite being a long running show for years and this was under TV Tokyo's network, the same as Naruto and Bleach. A studio and/or network might want to put out fillers because its still income and ratings for them. Naruto fillers still did better than most other anime out there when it came to ratings.
The only time they wont really have a choice is when they have nothing else to replace it, even temporarily.

If we're talking about the anime boost, Kimetsu was actually selling the same as BC before their respective anime. Its pre-anime peak is 157k, hardly next to nothing.

So yeah nothing and that was after its Togashi recommendation boost.

Final readings from this week issue: Tokyo Shinobi Squad, We Never Learn and Yui Kamio Lets Loose.
TSS has some chapters since it is in the middle of the arc, but I'm already assuming they are going to get the top rank in the test and finish the manga like that.
We Never Learn may extend its run in the magazine after the event in this chapter. :eyeroll
On Yui Kamio Lets Loose, I have nothing against the ending of the arc, it made sense and the art was just gorgeous, Ayako is gorgeous... *-*
By the feeling of the next chapters we will see if it is going to get axe or it will survive a little bit more.

I don't see how 150k physical copies for series without anime can be considered nothing in this day and age, even for WSJ. Unless you use megahits like MHA and TPN as standard for what most series should sell.

Battle shounen is the most competitive group of the magazine, it must sell at least that much to survive. It will reach this figure if it lasts long enough, even without anime. That's why nobody took Kimetsu no Yaiba seriously until some months ago.

Just so you know BC and Kimetsu were not selling 157k when they started and about a decade ago those sales were ground for axe but both were spared by in large due to Nakano's push campaign which really benefited Kimetsu and TPN. Jujutsu selling that much in less than a year it started is impressive BC and Kimetsu selling that two years in isnt.

You guys have some seriously skewed expectations for sales, lol. 150k is a lot, it may not be enough to be one of the best-sellers in Jump, but that doesn't mean it's even close to bad numbers.

Its both of them weren't apart of the PUSH campaign there wouldn't be any argument. Its less so "its bad" and more so "that's it?". Dr. Stone sells about the same and gets the same recepton.

Also, aren't we forgetting how digital is, you know, a thing which exists?

Seriously, people are too nostalgic about the sales of the Big 3 Era >>

It is normal for a successful series in Jump, except for gags. Believe me when I say that.
I have sales for three series readily available so I will use them: Nisekoi, MHA and Shokugeki no Soma. (Good times when I had the time to make tables like that)
MHA is just cowardice to compare, reached 200k by the second volume (picking only the sales when it was in the oricon chart).
Shokugeki no Soma also reached 170k by second volume.
Nisekoi is a romcom, a genre with more modest sales: 166k by the 5th volume.

Bringing up digital is worthless without actual numbers to go by. Most of the titles running would have not made it a decade ago.

I mean the Big 3 era had the highest average of volume sales in the magazine's history so all this shows is that standards went way down (FYI Mx0 was cancelled despite it selling 150k per volume)

Holy, Mx0 was selling that!? Holy shit, that's fucking brutal.

And you can argue about the standards dropping, but that's not my tea to brew.

Seeing the graph above once again I see that Kimetsu no Yaiba going above 50k in the 5th volume. lol
I've seen series cancelled selling 50k before that.

Yep. That was considered "bad" back then. Mx0 was a 100k seller yet still got canned but when you consider the line up back then it makes since with the Big 3 selling roughly a million per volume then you have titles like DGM, Reborn, PoT doing 700k and everything else riding out to above 100k, ironically enough the title with the lowest sales that managed to survive was TLR was scrapped 200k per volume....barely.

In any case, it is old discussion, we've been talking about Black Clover and Kimetsu no Yaiba been pushed since they started. It is kind of useless talk about that now that they are established, but no one can deny that it was with a lot of help.

Dr.Stone sells significantly less even with anime.

Your examples are the most successful titles of their genres, which don't represent the average Jump series nowadays . Nisekoi in particular is probably the best selling romcom of modern age. For every Nisekoi, you've got 5 Bokuben and 5 Yuuna. If Shueisha used the likes of MHA and Nisekoi as measuring sticks for what new manga should sell, they would have about 5-6 series running in 2019.

I never said they were average, I'm saying that 150k is the normal for a series to survive among battle shounen even now. Even considering your argument, Kimetsu and Black Clover started in 2016 and 2015 respectively, when it was even more a must to sell that much.
Shokugeki no Soma was the most successful in its genre?

I'm distinctly recalling a conversation I had with someone where they argued Jump is a "forced" magazine, and I'm left wondering if that idea is remotely valid, or if the Big 3 became this sliding monopoly of sorts crossed with a bubble economy that just burst around the end of the decade.

Quick question, how does Nisekoi compare to Quintuplets and Kaguya in sales?

I was a huge fan of Nisekoi since the beginning and I was still scared that it would be cancelled even selling almost 100k in 2nd volume! Any swing in the TOC was a reason to have a beginning of a heart attack. You guys don't know what this is, the TOC is actually boring now. XD

Gotoubun and Kaguya are ongoing so that it's hard to compare, but Nisekoi already sold over 10 millions with 23 volumes (out of 25 volumes total)
