Platinum End started selling really well, now is just a 60-80k seller.
People only bought the first volumes in large numbers because of the famous duo but they were probably quickly disappointed with what they got. Even if they give it an anime there's no saving it...

It will be entertaining to see how much the readers like or hate Samurai 8.

did the Magi successor manga ever take off or was that another failure following a successful entry.

I wonder who the RxL base was, I initially thought most of the kurobas fandom would go over, due to character designs alone, but i guess people truly did care about writing quality in their sports manga.
same people i think, KnB was more of a sports manga with some shonen mixed in at the beginning, using plays that looked more like super powers in a moderate way, at the end it was full shonen with some sport in it. RxL was more like KnB at the end, full shonen with some sport mixed in, maybe that turned away people expecting something like early kuroko. Character designs and characters in general (robot being the exception) were worst too.

You guys think a bad ending to a previous manga, even if it was a success, can carry as some form of pressure in the developent of a new series?

Probably didn't help El Dlive which pretty much nobody was excited about when it debuted nor was there any real interest during its run.

Platinum End will be a 10+ volume monthly manga which is still a success either way you look it. And that is all they needed.

Wasnt that manga a SJ+ one? I never see those gaining any buzz outside of Japan to no surprise.

I would not compare Naruto to KnB
It's not a Naruto vs KnB comparison. The comparison is to show that it doesn't matter how big the mangaka's previous work was. KnB ended during its peak. Just shows that If the follow up manga is bad or average or fails to grab readers in the start, it will only get low sales.

Platinum End is another series that is literally surviving solely due to the name of Ohba/Obata. If Kishimoto's new series only survives because it has his name attached to it, that'll be just sad.

Apparently Gintama has a phone app that already uploaded volume 76's chapters up for people to read. That's a strange way to kill some sales.

Undoubtedly the name of Kishimoto will play a not inconsiderable weight in the success of the new work, let's talk about the author of a pillar of Jump.

Ken Ogino (behind Lady Justice manga) is back at it with designs for a girl with artificial limbs for his next manga. Could it be in the WSJ? P.S. I hated Lady Justice.

Yeah because we all know Watsuki followed up Kenshin with another memorable manga.

I'd say times have changed though. I think is way more possible for Kishimoto new manga to survive because Kishimoto name now than in 2000. But still everything can happen: we've had Watsuki and Kuroko no Basket or Beelzebub authors examples in the negative way and...Hiro Mashima in the ''his name is enough for selling''. Togashi could be another example with Level E. As some of you said, I wouldn't compare Kishimoto with KnB or Beelzebub authors, but with superhit authors like Kurumada and Watsuki.

The Kurumada stuff is interesting because when Ring ni Kakero ended, Kurumada was axed, then Saint Seiya happened, then he was axed once again, and he went to another magazine.

Another example could be Katsura: Wingman was somehow succesful, then he was axed, then Video Girl Ai, then he was axed twice, then I''s (funny thing is that his most well known animated title aka DNA2 is one of his axed titles).

PD: Still, the big hit of 2019 is going to be Chainsawman

Nobody says that it will be another success to Naruto, it is impossible to repeat the success, but I would say that the name of Kishimoto will at least make sure that the work sells well at least the first numbers.

The sequel to Kenshin sells well they tell me.

The sequel to Kenshin sells because it has the Kenshin name, not Watsuki. Same situation with Boruto.
Unless of course you want to tell me how successful Gun Blaze West and Embalming were.
You have this habit of purposefully ignoring and twisting facts around to fit your warped reality.
It's only cute when Sharkbait does it.

And Eden's Zero, then?

Then what is the difference between the name of the author and that of the manga? Already the fact that I will be Kishimoto's first work after years will push people to buy it, and if it builds a fanbase, it will have more chance to survive, as is the case.

Making friends with other mangaka does not make much sense, few can afford to make the numbers

Maybe Edens Zero is just a good manga? Mashima had a failed manga after Rave Master as well so clearly he isn't immune either.
I'm not saying a veteran author won't help sales but it doesn't guarantee success either by any means as history has proved time and time again.
We've given you plenty of examples of vetearn author's of hugely popular series who didn't succeed with future works so please quit regurgitating "MUH KISHIMOTO" because it's not helping your case.

I personally think it’s virtually impossible for Kishimoto’s new series to fail or get axe. Or at the very least extremely unlikely.

I understand that big mangaka have failed before when they came back.
However Kishimoto is the creator of Naruto. The 3rd best selling manga of all time, and a manga that’s still incredibly relevant. That “From The Creator Of Naruto” tag is going to hold A LOT of weight.

On top of that, his return has been hyped up since Naruto ended. And Jump released a title, art work, release date, and trailer for the manga months in advance. I don’t recall them ever doing to that.
So I’d imagine they’re extremely confident this will be a big series

I don't nesasarily disagree. I just find Ice King's arguments to be extremely flawed.
Not to mention, Kishimoto could easily be a one trick pony. The quality of the series could definitely lessen the impact of any level of promotion and I'm not the biggest believer in Kishimoto's writing skills in the first place.
I consider him Tabata tier.

With the hype going behind the fact that it's KISHIMOTO, it's a lot easier for this series to fall flat on its face than it is to be a super success.
Boruto survives because of Naruto's name and even that we see how much its sales decreased from when it started.

Platinum End is another prime example. Ohba/Obata duo's name together was like a gold mine after Death Note which was a phenomenon when it released and Bakuman which was also great (IMO better than Death Note but whatever). It felt like anything they made would be great and would sell incredibly well.

Kishimoto as a writer does not mean much to me, naruto was a rollercoaster of quality in that regard, with mediocre and great moments. The end in particular is super lazy and generic. He is good at setting up the characters, especially the support cast, and his drawings always were among the best on the magazine for me. Now that he is not drawing and only as a writer i can definitely see the series not being that good and only surviving on his name.
The comparison to naruto is not going to help either, most likely he is not going to repeat the huge success of naruto, and that is normal, but how much should the new series sell so is not considered a failure? even if he sells what is looked at as a good number for a "new series" people will still say that the sales are disappointing.
