Apparently Hinomaru Zumo's first anime volume only sold 76 copies. That's the second worst selling first volume ever.
That's horrible. I don't know how Hinomaru Zumou is still being serialized at this point lol

So... I get that the Neverland's anime was a huge success, but can someone explain to me by how much? Is it a bigger success than previous Jump successes?

I need a reference point.

This always fascinates me.
>> Never heard of a series before, or heard of but has no interest
>> Watch one episode (let's say from a good series)
>> Buy every single volumes

It's certainly big, how much really depends on how long it can keep up these good rankings though. Definitely on the bigger end of things at least. Black Clover never had physical volumes ranking anywhere near this high for example. Just did a quick look up of how MHA did the first few weeks after season 1 and TPN seems to be ranking better, but the cutoffs were higher back then, so they end up being pretty similar (MHA was like ~5k more than TPN in its second week I think). But really you're not gonna get volumes ranking much higher than this regardless of how successful a boost is (because of new releases ect), so it's all about how long they can keep their position.

More specifically, they buy every single NEW and not used volume. When I was in Japan, everytime a new anime came out 2nd hand store (there are shit ton of them) were promoting the new anime with selling used volumes of the same series with 50% off, a volume with less the 100-yen price tag. Here, people prefer to buy new volume and actually own them.

Can't remember the Japanese term of it, a lot of 2nd hand store not sealing the volumes and some people prefer to come, stand for 30 minutes and read the whole volume, back to the shelf and went home without pay, and store owners are fine with it.

I'm really happy for Neverland success.

I can only pray ne0;lation will be the next Promised Neverland. The current arc is just as amazing. Arata one is just the coolest dude ever and his cronies are good.

Lemmings!

I can easily see it following the tpn trajectory. Just pray it remains nontraditional unconventional amd doesnt sell itself out for the sake of popularity like tpn did.

I do not know if you followed it from the beginning, but Neverland was extremely popular from the very first chapters.

The Jump advertised a lot, it was award-winning, already the first volumes sold a lot, figured that it ended in top 10 of 2018 also without anime.

Logical that with the anime its popularity already very high could only increase.

The Promised Neverland seems to get a traction from anime unlike the other Shueisha anime counterpart Kaguya-Sama wa Kokurasetai (sadly, because its a well done adaptation with a fantastic OP).

Hinomaru Zumou has to die soon, despite the fact it seems like it's a Shueisha's pet project. Horrible sales, anime bombed hard, reception is among the lowest so far (in the bottom 3 rankings outside of last place gag manga unlike the top times in the beginning). I could see it survive for a bit longer if newbies bomb (I assume David will be a sure thing to go and Neo or Higuma could do)

Sesuji wo Pin to! never getting an anime is weird to me. It had enough material, it is one of the manga that is better translated on screen (like Act-Age).

Prior performance of dance anime doesnt suggest it's worth taking a risk on dance animes.

TPN and 5 tobun might be the higher ranking series, but in term of relative growth I would say Kaguya also benefited a lot from the anime, more than the typical anime boost

At this point, I'm surprised some people are still surprised with how big TPN's boost is.

I'm guessing from memory but I do believe Assassination Classroom's boost in sales after the anime was similar to TPNs.

I hope it doesn't die soon buy who knows, I'm just hoping it gets the ending the author has planned for it.

Doesnt make sense to end HZ until there is a new sports series that has established itself. Surely they would want to keep two sports series going, unless therse been a period of time in JUMP where only one sports series is running for an extended period of time

Most recently, two years and 8 months between the end of Eyeshield 21 (June 2009) and the start of Haikyu (February 2012) only had Kuroko as a notable sport series going on, if I'm not mistaken (of course, there were other small sports series attempts during that time like Light Wing, but nothing too notable afaik).

Thanks for the chart of Kaguya, really happy it got some boost. I wish it was in WSJ, despite claiming it is a seinen manga, it is shounen level and tame really.

Other "notable ones" (at least a 1+ year run) were Robot x Laserbeam and Kurogane, managing to last around 65-70 chapters. But yeah, Kuroko was their last true success for sports not counting Haikyuu of course.

Like I said it up there, HZ should likely make it out alive of this cancellation round thanks to newbies, but I am certain it will be cancelled in 2 axe rounds (so mid 2019). Gives the author time to wrap, they may start a new sports manga and there you go.

I believe Yuuna is in the biggest danger out of the bottom 3 veterans. Souma still has sales on its side so it will be Bleach 2.0 (on a smaller scale), Zumou still has the anime ongoing and Yuuna is....just Yuuna really. Nothing going for it except the flop anime and falling sales each volume. Falling sales got Robot x Laserbeam cancelled, so will this one.

Sure, but I was looking through the time when there was only one big sports series running, RxL came long after that period after all :D

Oh right! So Kurogane only it is. Yikes. You would think a place like WSJ would manage to find lots of sports manga hits because of the demographic it targets, but nope. Also, WSJ. Please. do. not. launch. ANOTHER. SOCCER. manga. I have been through that with Meister. Shuudan, Ole Golazo, Light Wing, Shonen Shikku. It is just not working in sales or popularity.

P.S. I was a big fan of Shuudan and Ole Golazo. RIP.
