I'm not sure if this is sarcasm, but assuming it isn't, I think it isn't helped by the fact that a lot of people don't have much of an attention span anymore. They want instant gratification, not world and character development to actually make you care about the action and stakes.

Also, regarding Saiyuki, it's worth noting that the majority of the battle manga which succeeded in this current era have been stuff which tackled untrodden ground. Kimetsu is the exception (unless you count the Taisho-era setting), and considering how weak its sales were starting out, it's the exception which proves the rule IMO.
