This is an interesting question. How do people vote?

Personally, I would vote for a series because

1) I like it waaay more than any other series in the magazine (no examples currently)
2) it had an exceptionally strong chapter (Dr. Stone)
3) I want it to survive (TSS)

In the current situation, I would probably never vote for One Piece (even if I liked it) simply because I know that it doesn't need my vote.

What about you guys?
I would vote just as outlined: Best 3 chapters in the issue I am voting in.

Welll... this latest discussion started with you suggesting that S8 is only so low in the TOC because of some master plan.

If you really don't want people discussing its popularity, you probably shouldn't be posting your own conspiracy theories on the subject either.
Notice the post you quoted was a post of me quoting him, which was initially against my ban. Also notice that his quoted post came after my warning. Also notice what I actually posted in my post.

"I like Jovan, that's why I answered him despite his comments going against what I asked earlier for people not to do."

I noticed. I'm saying that if you hadn't answered him (despite you asking people not to do just that), there probably wouldn't have been a discussion.

It's entirely reasonable blind speculation is my point. And assuming the three weeks thing was ever true and prominent, it likely isn't today. Why would they let all these series they plan to cancel run for six months if they knew right away? We're ALL just making incorrect points and massive assumptions here. I propose we ban all irrelevant discussion of Samurai 8 outside of "I did/didn't like this week's chapter" and why until we actually see some real indication of how it is received, which the TOC and random forums making up a tiny percentage of readers are likely not.
Iirc the three weeks is the earliest they decide whether to cancel the series or not. So I'm guessing it's usually a bit later for most series. However once they have the data of the polls for the third week, the 4th chapter would already be released and the 3 chapters after that are probably already finished as well with chapter 8 probably being done at that time. Then they usually have to give the mangaka time to end the manga, so let's say 2 weeks and you're already at the length of the shortest Shounen Jump manga in the last 5 years, Tokyo Wonder Boys.

Also, they most likely keep some series running even after they already decided to cancel them because they don't have enough series to replace them yet. I believe the current situation is a prime example for that. They ended Shokugeki no Souma and Hinomaruzumou in June and from then on, they only had 18 series instead of the usual 20 series in Jump. Now there is still one open slot available, yet there were only two new series last batch and they only filled one of the two slots while keeping most of the manga that weren't doing well.

This to me shows that they don't have enough new manga that they deem good enough to serialize. And while quite a lot of manga they end up serializing are bad and have no chance of surviving, I'm guessing the majority of manga they don't serialize is even worse. So it's pretty hard for them to find manga to serialize. So rather than axing the manga they already decided to axe straight away and getting a magazine that is half empty, they wait until they have enough new series to replace them with.

I think the reason why they currently have an open slot and decided to cancel one series instead of filling both open slots, is because they need to pay the mangaka of Saiyuki if they continue serializing his/her manga. Instead with an open slot, they can fill it with a lot of one shots to experiment (issue 33 to 39 all had a one shot) or special chapters to promote series from their other magazines. With lots of one shots, they can find out what readers want to potentially get more new manga they can serialize.

This is imo the most likely reason why they don't cancel new series straight away. Jump right now is in a situation where they need as many new hits as possible. Because if they were to cancel every new manga that hasn't gained an audience right now (except for the two newest ones because we can't tell yet) they would be left with 12 manga (already counting Chainsaw Man, because it seems to be popular). Even if you were to assume Samurai 8 has a big audience which I doubt, it would still be only 13 series.

Out of those 12 or 13 series, Neverland and BokuBen will most certainly end within the next year. I don't read Yuuna, but I think I heard somewhere that it might be ending soon as well. So basically, they have 12 series that are pretty much set in stone and at least two of those will end soon, which will leave them with only 10 series left. So they need good new series fast, but they don't have many new manga to serialize. So they have to keep the ones that will get cancelled running for longer because they don't want the magazine to be too empty.

I noticed. I'm saying that if you hadn't gone against your own ban and responded, there probably wouldn't have been a discussion.
And I addressed that already. I like Jovan. I'm not going to just outright delete his post like that. He's a good guy and contributes heavily to the community. He admitted to not fully understanding the specifics of the ban, which is why I later clarified so there wouldn't be future misunderstandings.

Also, just to make something clear while I have your ear. It is actually against the rules for normal users to openly question moderators or tell them how to do their jobs in the way you did previously. I'm not going to enforce that rule with you because you seem like a nice guy. Just giving you a head's up for future reference.

There’s something so satisfying seeing Spy x Family up there each week. I feel like it really could hit a million by volume 3, maybe earlier if volume 2 starts a surge on 1 again.

First week Oricon sales of the last two volumes just for comparisions. Visible growth for Dr. Stone even with a day more, Haikyuu on a down mode this time.

Act-Age Vol 7 *61,384 (4)
Act-Age Vol 8 *66,245 (5)

Haikyuu Vol 38 *324,435 (6)
Haikyuu Vol 39 *260,748 (5) (big drop, even counting a day less)

We Never Learn Vol 12 *76,366 (6)
We Never Learn Vol 13 *70,467 (5)

Dr. Stone Vol 11 *56,414 (4)
Dr. Stone Vol 12 *68,740 (5)

For Jump+ now. Jigokuraku is outpacing the last volume even with a day less! Nice. Saotome did less than 15,445 copies in 4 days for the last volume, didn't chart in Top 50 Oricon unlike now.

Jigokuraku Vol 6 *48,014 (6)
Jigokuraku Vol 7 *52,663 (5)

Darling in the Franxx Vol 5 *34,434 (4)
Darling in the Franxx Vol 6 *33,650 (5)

SxF still up there at 230k units sold for volume 1... that's incredible. I wonder how fast volume 2 will actually sell when it comes out, I think it can break 150k in the first week maybe even more depending on how many copies are actually printed.

If the sales end up bad, I'll remove the ban. At that point, there's undeniable proof that the series is underperforming.

I'd be legit shocked if it did sell poorly, though.
But what threshold should we use to determine if the sales is bad, average, or good? This is not a question for S8, but for new series in general. How many copies does a typical Jump series sell on its first volume? Do series made by veteran author usually sell more from the get-go due to name recognition?

I'm more interested in Yui Kamio's placement than S8.
It's doing just well enough to stick around but they don't seem to be pushing it as a Phoenix like Spring Weapon despite I think doing a little better? At least in sales.

Spy x Family should go to ESJ lineup at once, I always forget to open M+ to see whether there is new chapters.

From what Ive seen

big flops sell under 3000
Standard flops and semi flops sell under 7000
Series that arent instant hits but have good growth potential sell 10 to 20000 (as do some series that do okay but end early due to bad timing)
Above that is a decent hit
and anything selling 50000+ will get over a year even if rankings are abysmal (like robo laserbeam)

though of course standards are probably different for the big mangaka so who knows.

Interesting fact about Yui Kamio is that it will be at 26th chapter without a 3rd Color Page (for example Act-Age did that on Ch.22). It will be hard to beat Hokenshitsu no Shinigami which needed 37 chapters for it. Wonder when Shueisha will give it something (of course in case they don't plan on pulling a surprise axe on it because of the poor sales which is extremely unlikely).

I don't know. I would not count it as growth. 1 day in the first week can make difference and we've seen this before with other series.
I'm expecting it to level out by 2nd - 3rd week.
