As a gay reader, the fact that there aren’t gay MCs doesn’t bother me at all. This is the kind of society I’ve grown up in. I can’t even say “I got used to it” since there has never even been the chance to get used to something which never existed in first place, or that rarely does. Blue Flag is the only example that can come to my mind, and although I much appreciate it since it’s something different and fresh, I just don’t care whether the main lead is straight, gay or bi. It would probably be a plus for me if they were, but since this is not the case, I just don’t care. Also I would never want some readers to be bothered by the fact that a character is gay therefore dropping the series, especially if I want that manga and author to be successful. As sad as it is, that’s just how things are. I much prefer reading a manga with no gay characters than a manga that uses tropes to make fun of our community (ex: gay characters are in 90% of cases represented as a joke by having boys wearing girls’ dresses or being ultra muscular with feminine voice or personality, which disgusts me most of the time because they don’t represent most of us, me included). Although some gay jokes are well-written and thought out, most are not. Also, Japan is still very close minded about that matter, or better, they stay silent about it. It’s like a taboo outside of the manga world. Time will pass and society will change. Whatever, I read the manga for the plot or the characters’ development. In a romance that might be more appreciated such development (ex: Blue Flag), but in Shounen manga I just don’t care about it.
