I have my doubts solely because of how much longer the manga is gonna last and also given how the backlogs won't be as big as this year, unless each volume hits 1.5 million.
BUT imagine KNY beating OP two years in a row in yearly sales. Just the possibility of it is insane.
So this is what’s happening in bookstores selling Kimetsu no Yaiba. People are being unrespectful (in my opinion) because they want the bonuses included in the last volume (already sold out therefore nowhere to be found)

Lol. What is this chart even?
Vols 8-15 show a typical trend of lower sales compared to previous volumes and then 16 and 17 come in like "NOPE, we're gonna go up now".

They are doing that because they want their favorite character card. Yesterday I saw people were exchanging cards since they couldn't get their favorite ones or they just are looking for the remaining ones to complete the set. I think the most wanted one are Tomioka, Inosuke, Zenitsu, Nezuko, Tanjirou.
1.5x to 2x is the general boost most series from WSJ get with an anime. BC falls within that range.
Also, we need to stop acting like BCs anime was a low budget crap fest. It wasn't. It very clearly has an average level of production and budget into it, especially for something that is in a long running format.
Now. Here's a series.
World Trigger.
The anime it received was arguably the lowest budget a studio could provide for a battle manga's (from WSJ) first anime season.
A much slower growth both before the anime and after the anime when compared to something like BC. Its sales increase was initially as low as something Dr. Stone. But now, despite coming back from a hiatus, it sells close to 400k if not more.
WT managed to keep going up despite an extremely low budget anime. If the logic that a poorly done anime, despite a good source material = low sales boost then WT should not be outselling BC before the hiatus let alone after it.
That's true when you look at this spreadsheet then you see that WT sales might not look as impressive as the upper manga series but once you take into consideration that it only released 2 volumes in 2019 then that number is reeeeeeeeally good. And it is damn impressive that WT's sales keep rising long after the anime ended and the two year hiatus ended.
Less than 10k sales for SxF2, the dream of reaching 500k before anime is dead~
When does SxF3 come out? Next week? Maybe it gets the other two volumes a boost like the release of the 2nd Volume did for the first Volume.
Boah! That insane large purple column for vol.1 and the tiny specks of yellow for the volumes after it. What a mad explosion of popularity that nobody expected to happen when Kimetsu released 2016. I know how sad I was back then for people not liking it because of its "poor art", but I was glad it kept going and going and going and now just SMASHED every expectation WSJ might have had for it when they gave it green light for their magazine. <3
It will more accurate to put Gotoge and Negi instead
Also, finally caught up with Kimetsu, and oh boy, yeah extending the manga way more will be a huge disservice to the story, this is officially the endgame.
you guys must be hating kimetsu no yaiba to want him to make the same bleach and souma mistake.
Extending the story just because of profits will make the manga go into a cycle that will undermine the quality of the story.

Usually what you would see for a series that is 15 volumes or more in is a declining chart because usually a percentage of those who buy the initial first volumes for various reasons like hype, certain aspects of the setting or appeal etc. tend to drop it after those volumes since the series would've gotten into the meat of its story or it would've moved away from some aspect or setting that they liked or the hype would've died down a bit.
MHA and TPN both had immense hype behind them, as seen from their backlogs. But their charts looked very different. There was a very clear difference between the first few volumes and the latest volumes because it meant a portion of those who bought the initial volumes stopped buying the later volumes.
This is the case for most known series as well because that's how anything is consumed.
But in KNY's case, there is no such difference. The latest volumes are right up there with the first volumes. Meaning the number of readers who read the first volume have read these latest volumes. Whatever be the reason, it is so big that there has been no drop in readers in 19 volumes.
It's more likely pointing to the fact that KNY's peak average for a volume is still quite a distance away. And by peak average, Im talking about what its volumes will sell after the hype goes away the sales stabilize and stagnate. I'm going to say, its average for a volume will be between 1.3-1.4 million. Meaning we might see the first volume sell almost 2 million.
Such an exciting thing to watch, that's for sure.
Editorial pressure? Yes, that does exist, and Nakano has even professed to it, but forced? Nope, nada. And besides, Nakano has said he doesn't really do that anymore:
Also, do remember that, while Bakuman is heavily steeped in Jump's internal culture, it's still prone to heavy amounts of dramatic license. Ohba/Obata freely exaggerate the importance of the survey rankings, editorial power, and other such factors in order to make the manga more interesting, so it's best not to take most things literally.
