Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I love the shape of the panels in Jojo. They have this erratic shape to them that compliments the nature of the fights perfectly. Jojo was the first series to make me fully notice the paneling of a manga and how important it is.

If we are talking like whole Jump I would probably give it to Akira Toriyama or Takehiko Inoue because I loved the way they portrayed action, you can feel the flow of the seconds or milliseconds passing thru how the characters move... In Toriyama's case, this was lots of times at the expense of having backgrounds (He said on interviews that the first thing he would make characters do in a fight would be to destroy the backgrounds so he wouldn't have to draw buildings or stuff like that).

BUT then we have Takehiko Inoue I mean just looking at his art leaves me flabbergasted most times, but I cannot believe some of the chapters of Slam Dunk were done weekly like I understand how Toriyama did it (He destroyed backgrounds so as to speed the drawing process) but Inoue makes great art that also conveys the flow of the milliseconds since the last panel AND beautiful, realistic backgrounds. I guess backgrounds would have been drawn by his staff, but still it's just amazing. The penultimate chapter of Slam Dunk pretty much encapsulates everything written here, it's a beautiful chapter with (almost) no dialogue in it, and still, you feel super excited (I remember my heart beating like crazy when I read it).

I guess action manga (like sports manga or fighting manga) would have the edge over other genres like romance, comedy or psychological manga on the "paneling" category because action is cool to look at, but here are some non-action manga I'd like to mention too.

Takeshi Obata in Hikaru no Go, he's good in Death Note too... But the thing is Death Note.. Is kinda "Stiff", like there's not much action in it so Obata's strengths aren't fully displayed there most of the times, but in Hikaru No Go there are some god-tier panels, 3 in particular that I remember to this day When Hikaru tells Sai the play that would have beaten Toya Meiji, the other is when Sai leaves, and the last is the sequence where Sai gives hikaru his fan.

Pre-Dragon Ball in Dr.Slump his goofy almost cartoonish style was very funny, super fitting for Dr.Slump.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Also, I know we aren't discussing worst paneling but for me it was D-Gray Man, I stopped reading it because I didn't understand the action sequences most of the times...

Outside Jump for some reason I LOVE the way Yowamushi Pedal is drawn.. So rough, sketchy, almost "dirty" looking panels. It's an acquired taste haha, that's for sure.

Edit: I just remembered Jojo, there are some bizarre panel layouts, obviously fitting for Jojo's Bizarre Adventure lol.
Psychological manga can definitely do some really cool shit with their paneling. Bringing up Inoue is kinda cheating, tho :P

Also about the DGM part - my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think it started getting bad when Hoshino got sick. And yeah, some of the stuff became really hard to follow often.

I'd say Hero Academia has my favorite paneling of all Shonen Jump history. A very good example in the spoiler pic (from Overhaul arc):

I always thought the idea was better than the execution ended up being for this particular spread, but yeah, Horikoshi is pretty good at this in general.

Oda has great paneling, it's just this Spectre dude hating again. A recent example is Oden's introduction

Oda in this panel literally makes the page look like what Oden is saying. We see this larger than life man being suffocated by the people by looking him from his back in an upside position and the text bubbles forming around him.

That's adequate, not great.
Also, too much noise.

See, to me, this would have worked much better if the build up to Oden was done solely in the previous page and on the last page we see this sole big panel with the central figure, it would be much more impatcful.

Oda was too ambitious with the Oden flashback. Dude tried to cover up a 20 year timeline in this flashback.

He'd always been too overly ambitious ever since the timeskip. The worst part is, no one in the editorial department is willing to say it straight to his face on what he could do better. Instead they just have some relative newbie handling him and being just a yes man to him.

I've thought about this, but I think the editorial department needs to place a willing to criticize their mangakas, no matter who they are, above all other criteria before transferring a new editor to a mangaka. I'd go into a little more detail, but I'm about to sleep.

Yeah, that maybe looks fine is isolation, but you have to remember that this, taken in with the page next to it, a visual clusterfuck. In less than two pages, we (rather abruptly) jump into a flashback with narration, before this page then gives us zero breathing room before "Oh hey, Oden!". It continues the main issue with Oda's paneling, he simply doesn't give the reader any breathing room, he has to include as much information as humanly possible.

For me, Toriyama is the master of panelling with Dragon Ball from beginning to end. Everything is fluid to read, which is why I was able to read and reread it many times even with 42 volumes.

That's really busy. Oda panelling really fell post time skip

Oh yeah, I'm going to fix what I said before. For me, My Hero Academia has the 2nd best paneling in all Shonen Jump.

The 1st one for me would be for Jujutsu Kaisen. Some examples in the following spoiler:

Also, I'd say Jujutsu Kaisen has currently the best coreographies and battles of all Shonen Jump. I find Gege coreography better than Oda, Horikoshi or Gotouge tbh. Jujutsu is a very dynamic manga and you can clearly feel it

About the new series, I think that Mashle and UxU have the better panelings. Those two are the ones which I read and I already see the end due to how easy is to read and enjoy them.

The busy-ness of the page it's the point, though. That's the argument they were making, if I understood correctly, and I would agree. That's why I think there's no one-size-fits-all definition of good paneling. The goal is to convey and enhance the emotion the page wants to show, and sometimes a busy page is the right choice.

Every page of One Piece is overly busy! There's never any emotion to any of the pages, they're purely done to display as much information as humanly possible. And Oda rarely goes beyond a cluster of rectangles and squares. There's nothing striking about how it's put together.

Right, let's not talk about One Piece as a whole. I just wanted to use it to make the point that sometimes it might work to have a cramped or busy page, which is a point of view I felt was missing for the conversation, and I personally think this page is a good example.

I genuinely can't think of a case where stuffing the frame with unnecessary information somehow improves it.

I agree, Haikyuu probably has the best paneling in WSJ right now. The matches and movement of the ball flows really well and two page spreads feel very dynamic. As for One Piece, I do agree that it can feel very cluttered, however that hasn't really detracted from my enjoyment of it. I know Oda can definitely still pull off great panels, such as the "He Laughed" page, so I don't really know what's going on.

Well, it won't be unnecessary information if the page works (and that wasn't my point, I was talking about too much information), but I think it can absolutely be effectively used to convey, just to give an example, a state of confusion or disarray in the setting. If there's too much going on in a given scene and it's overwhelming for the characters, it might a good or interesting choice to make it similarly overwhelming to the readers (again, I'm not talking about One Piece anymore).
