Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Asou after Shinseiki Idol Densetsu & Our Heroes Studies did Saiki Kusou, but Heroes Studies lasted 6 volumes, I would consider it a failure but dunno if that counts if Oumagadoki Zoo doesn't

not in WSJ
Kaito did Cross Manage & Buddy Strike and now have Blue Flag on Plus, (Cross Manage lasted 5 volumes so again similar to Oumagadoki Zoo)

Yamamoto (E-Robot & Love Rush) have Saotome on Plus
Tanaka (Hitomi no Catoblepas & Kagijin) have Summertime Render on Plus

not in Shueisha
Hamada (Dogashi Kaden & Pajama na Kanojo) did Hanebado on Afternoon

I would say Nekoma vs Karasuno have a better rivalry than Hinata and Kageyama

are these 2 even rivals anymore?
MHA main plot revolves around the development of Deku & OfA vs Shiggy & AfO parallel development
I could swear "Heroes Studies" sounds like an MHA Spin-Off

Are you arguing people don't have reason to?
I certainly would argue that people shouldn't have had a reason to be saying it's ending for a year now. A year ago it was in the middle of big arcs that clearly weren't aimed at fully resolving the lingering plot threads, and the series' ranking was staying far enough from the bottom with enough other series ending that there was no real danger of it ending. Thirty weeks ago it returned to the stand alone slice of life chapters and short arcs it'd been doing until the big arcs started alongside the anime. Which rather than them being purely fluff, Tadahiro's scattered developments and minor world building that have later been relevant in them. Seventeen weeks ago the series finally did something that showed what time of year the series had reached since the previous mention of what month it was. It turned out that the two previous big arcs and all the other miscellaneous events only took place in less than a month. Since then maybe a month and a half at best has passed in series. In short, the series spent the last year doing a couple of big arcs, before returning to the same ambling pace it had before it started doing back to back bigger arcs. All without any sign of possibly ending until recently. So no, people should not have been saying for a year that it looks like the series could end at any time.

Furthermore, given that just a couple chapters ago Yuragi was literally toying with people who expect it to end abruptly, I'd say people should be cautious about saying it's ending now as well. Could it end with this arc? Sure. It's possible, the series has made a lot of progress. But it has no clear direction towards ending at the moment. Other series are clearly in their final arc, or even clearly fighting the final boss. Yuragi has neither of those going for it at the moment. It looked like it would resolve one thing, then swerved to something else. The result is that the arc as it goes on could move towards resolving remaining questions, or opening up new ones. Which way it'll go remains to be seen. I would not be surprised if it concludes with volume 23, and I would not be surprised if 6-8 months from now the series is still going.

Lol as soon as Amazon put vol20 (the postcard edition) in their site, its now in the top in the best seller ranking. (Rakuten still hasn't put vol20 in their site).

Kubo is no Inoue or Togashi, if that's what you mean.

But his use character imagery in his story telling is far from being "limited". The way he portrays anger and/or despair is pretty great. Examples - Chapter "Everything but the rain" when Ichigo returns to SS and Chapter 634 "Friend 4".
He can also be incredibly poetic with his chapters. His chapter 565 "God Like You" is an example of this.

What he lacks is long term planning and therefore the consistency varies a lot. Maybe that's because of his health, who knows.

Everything Kubo draws (including all of the above) is very cinematic and that's always been his biggest strength.

That said, his new project could be literally anything. Even a short 10 chapter serialization of a spin off or something. Who knows.
I know this idea may be a little too far out and experimental for Jump, but what if Kubo's next manga goes the silent route? No text bubbles, just drawings.

Look, I don't dislike Yozakura, but now people are saying that the series suddenly got better even though, to me, it is the same way it was already.

The focus still remains only in Taiyou and Mutsumi (and sometimes the creepy brother and the Hinagiku guy), and all other siblings are still missing. OK, maybe there's a thread to develop a story with Taiyou parents now, but I won't credit it being good till I see it. There's no garantee that next chapter we won't have another Mutsumi's crazy fan. Also, the battles keep being villains getting almost always one hit ko'ed by Taiyou (or by the creepy brother and the Hinagiku guy) and that's it.

So, even though I don't think Yozakura's that bad like people said before, I really don't get where all this praise is coming from now, too.
We had a proper mini-serious arc again finally that wasn't over in one chapter, that's what people have been asking for since ch 10.

Although another reason is probably because we know it's not dead yet. It's hard to get attached to a series you're assuming will get cancelled in a few weeks, but now that it's had okay sales and some more promotion, people can read and enjoy it normally instead of skimming through it quick not caring.

I kinda think that was due to the author's fault for not planning out the chapter well enough. He could've combined 1&2 together, that I agree with. But for some reason, he couldn't. He's still a newbie though, so I'm kind of lenient towards him. It's the next three chapters that's going to determine how he's going to handle the series from there on.
I always felt GotW was meant to be a one-shot. It established the setting, build up the mystery, gave us The Reveal and then ended on a bittersweet but hopeful note. Immediately after reading it, I thought "That was really nice, but I kind of can't see it getting more interesting after this."

So far, it hasn't changed my mind. None of the other chapters have done anything remotely memorable, and it's losing interest fast... As far as I'm concerned, Jump made a mistake serialising this, because I feel like the author would have had a much better chance with a new idea that didn't shoot its bolt in the first chapter.

I do believe Kubo can pull it off better than Kishimoto (who attempted that with an important chapter in Naruto). Don't necessarily think people would enjoy it though.

I would love to see a short story like this.

SxF is definitely on my list since I want to see what the buzz is all about.

But one of the main reasons I kinda stopped following newer WSJ manga was because everything just felt like a rehash of an already established cliche or setting. Probably just me, personally.
So seeing people call Act Age and CSM unconventional for WSJ is definitely what intrigues me. I've read a bit of CSM when it came out, so I have an idea of what its like.
Read Jigokuraku

I agree. A change of tone definitely helped the manga. But also the focus on Taiyo and his family, which personally gave me the impression that the story finally moves on instead of wasting time with "psychopath of the week".

I wonder if that's true. I mean, if you really enjoy a series, would you stop doing so just because you know it's not popular and could be axed? If you just skimmed through it before, why would you suddenly be invested then? I think the real reason people started to enjoy Yozakura (again) is because the story developed in the direction they wanted (as you said), but also because they heard other people praising the series and gave it another chance.

So Agravity Boys and Undead x Unluck, which were intensely polerizing before beginning, are looking to succeed, while Zipman and Guardian of the Witch, which had large amounts of pre-release anticipation, have been quickly labeled cancellation fodder.

Funny how things work.

How is Agravity "looking to succeed" when it ranks in the bottom 5 every week?

General editorial comments, word of mouth on social media, and the Amazon rankings all point in that direction. Some not even that bad TOC places means very little.

Are you seriously going to pursue this avenue now?

It's pretty obvious Agravity Boys will not be any flop like the other new series, its ranked always in the border of the bottom, editors said twice the series is being well received, it's also very popular between jp twitter, if will be a "success" we don't know yet but it will probably sell better than Yozakura.

Didn’t it get additional pages (like Undead is about to) because it’s being well received? The TOC isn’t absolute. I could see Agravity Boys getting a fan base like Gintama due to the men’s designs.

Anyway, my top 5 for the week:
1. Act-Age
2. We Never Learn
3. Undead Unluck
4. Dr. Stone
5. Jujutsu Kaisen

My enjoyment of the rookies are...
1. Tie between Undead Unluck and Mashle
2. Mitama
3. Yozakura
4. Agravity Boys
5. Guardian of the Witch
6. Zipman
On a side note, I listen to Weekly Manga Recap and I’m disappointed that they chose not to follow UU. I have a feeling that it’ll be a Chainsawman Part 2 with them, where they drop a series because of sexual humor and then pick it up later down the road when it’s a clear success. I can understand why people don’t like sexual humor or fan service, but it’s a shame when they miss out on a series’ other qualities.

Also, since when are we taking the general editorial hype magazine texts at face value? It will never state "This series is getting extra pages because it is struggling in the rankings, but we hope to turn it around with this promo move" or "This volume release is not doing so well, so we got a color page for additional promotion to do something about that". No, it will always the reasons for stuff is "great reception", "rave reviews" and "outstanding popularity".

I just want to remind people that Horikoshi's previous series, Sensei no Bulge (or whatever it got localised to), got a colour page on ch 10 "as thanks for the popularity" then got cancelled at ch 16.

Editor hype means nothing, colour pages mean nothing, the only (mostly) consistent indicator of success is being placed well on the ToC. Decent sellers have been cancelled in favour of lower selling series because the low-seller was higher on the ToC.

Let's just wait for first sales. So far we only got Mitama and Yokazura, the others have yet to release their sales though it probably doesn't matter for Zipman. At least I can't remember reading any numbers for Zipman's first volume.
