Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I don't think 3) is that important, there are lots of sucessful series with limited information about the lifes of the characters off the pitch. I mean, the point about make the characters seem like human beings is valid, but a good author can show it just in their relationship with teammates and with the sport. And, well, about 4), Kuroko wasn't that long ago, why do you think it wouldnt work now? The rest of the points are valid, I feel, but these felt a little weird to me.

Anyway, I would like too see a spokon that was about the life of a pro from the get-go, that's a little thing that could add a lot to the dynamic. Some have it at a later point of the series, but I mean something like Ao Ashi, in which from the very beginning we see the MC trying to get into the youth team of a professional club (not a school club).
Even at the time it was running Kuroko had a lot of complaints about the over the top nature of the manga being an "insult" to the genre (someone even threatened to bomb Fujimaki's old high-school because of it). While I obviously can't speak for everyone, characters who frame sports as literal life and death battles are impossible to take seriously IMO. Like...is anyone able to read Prince of Tennis with a straight face nowadays?

Ao Ashi is a seinen series, though, which probably have influenced that element. Not that it isn't still a valid premise, just that it's likely shonen manga stick to school clubs due to them being directly tied to the teenage readers.

Don't be Beast Children and have chickenscratch for art.
Eh, but the art wasn't that bad in my opinion. Actually, it was pretty damn good sometimes. Beat Childrens aimless story was what killed it in the end, but the characters and art were decent.

A new spokon, huh? Honestly, I don't have high hopes for one. Something like Blue Lock would be nice, though.

Well, sure, but it still sold well. And Prince of Tennis might not be enjoying the popularity of before (it's an old series), but... It still sells decently. I'm not sure there isnt a market for it anymore. And what about something like Eyeshield, that had "special moves" which were more like visual metaphors?

And I know Ao Ashi is seinen, but it's still a teenage MC, and Jump had a few series with focused on professional career of the MC eventually. I think it could work. Also, that reminds me, SQ had 1/11, which had a really interesting premise, was mostly about a professional career and didn't follow that formula you described, so there's untapped potential in the genre yet, even if it isnt a "traditional" spokon.

Let's be honest, we all know the real reason for those sales. It's starts with something rotten.

As for the Eyeshield thing, eh, that's fine. It's just meant to be a metaphor, which is practically a trademark of the genre at this point.

I think it makes no difference whether the spokon has elements of fantasy (powers) or is realistic.
The most important thing is to have the acceptance of the Japanese. If you can, it will be good for the jump.

1980 to 2010 is the year where the genre of sports is easily loved by anyone, the current genre of sports is not easy to enter readers taste nowaday.

Yes, there are Haikyu and Kuroko no Basuke but it's 100% luck and several factors they can succeed until now especially Haikyuu. Not many sport genre can pull golden goose.

I was trying but i really couldn't show the same interest i had to Slamdunk, Eyeshield 21 and Prince of Tennis these are simple different. Hinomarou Zumou was the last sport i taken a slight interest.

As for the Eyeshield thing, eh, that's fine. It's just meant to be a metaphor, which is practically a trademark of the genre at this point.
Eyeshield 21 truly boost people interest to American football including me. i am indonesian and american football is not popular there, soccer is our game which was frustating me because i can't play the real game, eventually i purchased Madden NFL game in playstation 2.
Good old time, my favorite position was QB because Hiruma was my favorite.

I don't think having literal superpowers in a spokon is a bad thing as long as the setting acknowledges that and they're not being passed off as normal stuff.

I'd actually like to see someone make something like that, in fact.

Speaking of an upcoming new batch, Yuuna's recent chapters have been confusing in a 'suddenly rushing to the final battle' kind of way. Honestly with how WNL's been recently, I could genuinely picture them both ending in a few chapters in the next batch.

I don't think S8's done quite yet though (unless they plan to shift it elsewhere) and it'd be weird to get rid of Zipman so early when every other recent flop's gone past ch 20, so I'm expecting a batch of 2.

Who are your favorite Jump mangaka right now? (In terms of their quirkiness, social media presence, author comments, etc)

Gorilla was the top favorite mangaka right? Was it because of his lazy gorilla persona?
Crossup for me between Fujimoto and Gege.

Are you forgetting the survey data? Jump's determinator for cancelling and launching series isn't a computer, it's a bunch of people who get together every two months and decide what to end and what to launch in its place.
Yes but what they decide to cancel is based primarily on TOC rankings. Which aren't based on a computer but people who spend money on the magazine and thus have a lot of say in what they want to see in it.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Being a gag manga doesn't make 5k copies "good sales". You mean when chapter 7 was ranked? because that was around issue #28 released in June 11, the first volume was release July 4, you're basically confirming that the manga started to rise with the release of volume 1.

You're again treating the ToC as if is a 100% representation of what is going on with a series today, the only thing you (or we) see is Agravity Boys at the "bottom five" and automatically assume the series is failing just because it's "there", Act-Age was placed under Agravity in the bottom on issue #13, that should tell enough about not treat the positions itself as a 1:1 unless of course you're constantly in the bottom 2/3, Chainsaw Man was 5 consecutive weeks in the bottom after the first good ranking and now it's super popular, Act-Age was even bottom 2 once.
Then all the more reason. Are you implying that the editors decided to just start placing jjk higher because volume 1 was coming out? I'm saying that the sales and rise in the rankings happened because people started to enjoy it based on its own merit. It certainly wasn't getting color pages or editorial hype back then.

Indeed. Act age, chainsaw and jjk pulled themselves up from the bottom. Let's see if agravity and Yozakura do the same. If they don't it's not good news for them. Of they do then congratulations to both.

I used to love Prince Of Tennis back when it was running in WSJ, I still read it to this day whenever new chapters get scanlated, but you don't read PoT expecting something real like you'd reading Slam Dunk.

Just recently, well in the latest scanlated batch of chapters Ryoma had a tennis match on a horse... so yeah I don't expect realism while reading PoT.

And Takeshi Konomi knows this and actively plays along with how ridiculous its manga has become, now players can literally make illusions and stuff like that haha.

But this also happened in the first Jump spokon series, Ring Ni Kakero. The world champion was named Jesus (not joking) and he had an attack called Neo Bible.. they also battled the Germany team which consisted of Nazis.. Basically.

Oh yeah and each boxer had a technique, for example one of the main characters had a punch called "Galactica Magnum" and it has like galaxies exploding and stuff like that.

Then this trend continued with Captain Tsubasa and so on, actually I have seen plenty of unrealistic spokon, but can't remember many realistic ones other than Slam Dunk... Any recommendations? Is Eyeshield 21 realistic or not?

So I guess what I'm trying to say is there are two kinds of spokon: "realistic" and "over the top".

Just as I wouldn't have expected a "fire shoot" or "clone abilities" in Slam Dunk, I don't expect realism in Prince of Tennis and I can enjoy both of them for different reasons, or even for the same reasons like character developments, companionship, stuff like that that is a staple of spokon be it "realistic" or "over the top".

I know it probably is heresy to admit this here lol, but I certainly enjoyed series like Prince of Tennis or Yowamushi Pedal more than Slam Dunk for example.
