It actually could affect the magazine releases, at least in print.
Hmm... I wonder if this means early releases could be killed for the next few months. I also do hope Jump will stick to digital-only from now on while the pandemic lasts.

Not really? I doubt they'd close down basic groceries stores like Lawsons, and those things are everywhere in Japan.
True, but there will probably be some stores getting closed.

Not that, but affecting the work of Shueisha and other publishing private companies is what i meant. I could see a switch to digital releases until the situation resolves.

To be fair from personal experience, Korea was in effectively a state of emergency (red alert) and people here are still going around shopping and living life. Both Japan and Korea have similar hygiene and mask-wearing norms so a similar sort of situation could arise there, which wouldn't affect sales that much.

Tbh, the whole thing seems to be only affecting the anime side of things so far, to keep things relevant to Jump. I think everything else is more or less business as usual.

Though at this point, when the Infinity Train movie info drops in a couple days, I wouldn’t be surprised if we either get a late 2020 release date, a 2021 release date, or none at all.

This seems very unlikely to me.

Time put on your tinfoil hats, folks. Who here believes Nakano prayed to every single deity that exists, up to including offering a severed animal's head so that somehow Kimetsu is stopped so OP can come out on top?

If so, he's clearly wasted a perfectly good warthog, because he's already lost several times over.

Yeah, it's a fun series that's good at keeping things exciting and relelvant to the plot. It also has a pretty unique premise, I can't think of any other manga about capturing SCPs (if you don't know what they are, it's like the game Control if you've played that, strange creatures and objects that break the laws of nature and are captured and contained by a secret organisation).

ToC placements are more important to wsj than sales, We just saw Samurai 8 get cancelled despite selling probably 5 times as much (or more) than Mitama, since nobody voted for it in the magazine. Agravity Boys might sell well enough but if it stays in dead last most weeks it won't live for too long. Same for anything else that drops (especially if their sales don't grow much in their next volumes).

That said, there are 5 long-running series that could end this year so, between that and the 8 spots filled by series less than a year old, there may actually be space for 7 new hits.
Sales and TOC placements have always been related.
If WSJ starts losing trust in a series because of declining sales and franchise value, it'll slowly start going down the TOC as well until eventually it's rushed or cancelled.
It's why S8's impending cancellation was all but obvious.
I feel like it more so has to do with a series growth, the expectations editorial has for a series, and how much they invested into a series.

Even though RxL and S8 sold much more than a lot of usual axed series, editorial likely had higher expectations for each series. They also invested a lot more promo into both series than they typically do for newcomer mangaka. Maybe the return didn’t justify what they spent in promo. And the lack of growth per volume didn’t inspire much hope.

However, I highly doubt they’d cancel a series that’s doing very well sales wise even if it wasn’t doing well in the TOC. And besides they create the TOC themselves, which isn’t entirely based on reader votes.
If all of the new series are doing well something obviously has to be on the bottom
S8 definitely fell short of any and all expectations, there is no doubt about that. Just the overprinting of 1st volume fiasco with S8 was proof of how out of line their expectations were from what was the actual reality of the series' reception.

Think RxL would've survived if it hadn't dipped in the following volumes. 100k for the first volume was solid, even for a returning veteran. But then it lost 1/3rd of that in the next few volumes which was indeed a big blow.
If I recall correctly, KNB had decent sales when it started but was always towards the bottom half of the TOC.

Si Viz posted this yesterday

I'm assuming it means My hero has sold 5million in the US? That's A LOT! Like seriously..

For example BLEACH had sold 1.2 millions in the US alone by 2007 (and 52 millions worldwide).. don't know about other manga sales in the US to compare it.

Does anyone know Naruto or DB manga sales in the US? I think maybe HeroAca has sold more than Naruto in the US in that time period?
Again, not saying 5 million in print from Viz alone isn't impressive because it is.
But such comparisons are moot since the manga/anime market in the US and outside Japan is vastly different to what it was when DBZ, Naruto or Bleach were popular.

Shoseki 4/4 for the noobs

#63 Yozakura
#65 Undead Unluck
#82 Agravity

so Yozakura held the best, but everything still in top 100.
That's nice for all three of them. Good that something worked outta the new batch.

Not bad for any of the new series. I'm guessing we'll see a reprint for Undead Unluck in about a week, and maybe Agravity will get one too within the week after.
Depends on how big the first print numbers were. I remember how some time ago a new series got like a reprint like 2 days into its sales and people were really surprised about and then when we got the actual numbers everyone was again surprised we were only around 20k in total. Even a difference of just 5k in prints can mean that one series might sell a bit longer and more constantly than another that had 5k less but sold out within a couple days.
That was Kimetsu's problem with how little prints it got considering the demand for it while S8 volumes put on dust in the bookshops.

They will probably give 2 million to volume 20 first print since they still want to capitalize on the buzz and keep making reprints. If anything, we'll probably see the 2.5 million first print with volume 21. As for Yozakura, volume 2 fell less positions than volume 1.

Volume 1

40 -> 60 -> 69

Volume 2

47 -> 63 -> ?
Ranks are relative, especially in times where Kimetsu hugs like 19 outta the top spots all for itself. xD
I am more curious about the numbers of sales we gonna get this week but the ranks are encouraging that all 3

Credit to Marcello, but Undead was sold out at Honto as well as Amazon.
Yay, that's great. Depending on how many volumes they had in store that is.

So what does this twit says? Support the first volume or thanks for how well it gets received?

I really liked that new oneshot (even though I can't understand Japanese). It has everything I like about manga: guys with swords, girls with swords, guys with GLASSES with swords, guys with big swords............... did I mention swords⚔⚔

Hope it becomes a full series one day.
Dude, this is really important to know if this gonna be a hit: Do the swords have swords?

So guys, at first I avoided Undead Unluck, do you guys recommend it? Since I’m hearing it’s getting a lot of positive criticism and feedback

Yes, make it to ch.9 and read where the series intends to go and you like it then I think you gonna enjoy it. I know a lot of people got really hyped after ch.9 and that was "just" an exposition chapter.

When Daut saved that girl Mash should have just call him SIMP with a dead pan face
comedy would have peaked and the genre would only go down from there

if the Yozakura family grandparents were alive this whole time why didn't they show up for the wedding chapter??
this seems like the author just made them up for the sake of adding characters and making the cast bigger and bigger

ZIPMAN ended with the mc joining the ZIP UP police force which is where the ZIPPO oneshot starts
does Shibata regrets not sticking with yomikiri premise? hmmmm...

It's all a conspiracy to keep Mitama alive.

Someone asked about if international shipping was being delayed the other day; my volume 2 of Yozakura and volume 1 of Undead Unluck came in the mail today, three days after release as per usual, so as of right now there doesn't seem to be widespread delays YET.

I wonder what will get the bronze medal in Jump sales at end of this year: Neverland or MHA.

I thought it was going for Neverland but lack of anime until Fall + MHA Season 4 have helped MHA to recover back a slot of the top-3 for now. Still, I think MHA is beating Neverland just by very very little
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

By the way, today is the 1st anniversary of the launching of Kimetsu no Yaiba anime episode 1.

Remember when just 365 days ago Kimetsu had just 6 million copies in circulation and wasn't even in the top-10 of Oricon in 2019 1st half?

My bet is still on TPN. It's behind MHA by about 20K for new volumes, but seems to be more than making it up with backlog? It always seems to show up above MHA whenever they both appear on the weekly Oricon chart (at least based on my memory). Strong backlog without an anime currently running and the fact that it's ending soon (with a relatively small amount of volumes) will probably give it a leg-up (not to mention the anime and movie which can give the series a last minute boost while MHA has nothing running).
