Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

The only unaccounted for slot is Act-age which was not expected, I assume they're just adding another series to the next batch (the first of 2021 I assume) and that'll account for it.
That or something will survive for an extra batch that would've been cancelled otherwise. We already have one series that's lasted a full year due to luck and there always being enough other stuff ending to keep it afloat (Yozakura), perhaps we'll get a second.

About the toc, yes for Cop and Dolphin, knew it that wouldn't be bad received, at least the first chapter but the consensus has been that it gets better each chapter so hard to see readers not enjoying, at least is already a much better start than Hungry Marie.

If wasn't for Magu-chan i would have a perfect score in the predictions for the first rank since the last 2 batches :P

Ayakashi seems like what i expected, is doing very fine, readers like it, i will not be surprised if the first volume sell as much or better than JJK and CSM (28k and 25k) in the first week, Yabuki fans will buy and overall readers too but ofc nothing is guaranteed.

Toc so short that a regular 9th place for Black Clover means bottom, toc will be like this for a while.

I expected Moriking to be in the bottom, without Yozakura and Undead + Bone Collection finished the bottom was predictable.

Waiting for Yozakura anniversary cp :celebrate

What if it’s not even a gag/comedy manga.
That would be a big surprise but the preview gives it away.

is there M+ new url leaks yet? could Jump still axe stuff even after TPGW? also shouldn't there be at least 2 more new series after the current batch?

Hq, Mitama, AA, Bones, TPGW are gone and not counting BTW, they're being replaced by Honomieru, KK, BnK
that's leaves 2 open slots no?
I commented about this 1/2 weeks ago, i think they will slow down for a while like in the second half of 2019 where they had 19 series running for a while, and start a new batch in the last issues of 2020 or the first ones of 2021.

I would be rich already If i get a dolar everytime you mention Yozakura in a way that it seems like the only reason the series still in the magazine is because "lucky" as if the series is doing nothing else like growing in sales every volume or keeping away from always being in the bottom lol

So we have:
- Time Paradox (ending this week)
- Burn the Witch (ending in 3 weeks)
- WNL (ending in 16 weeks)
- CSM (ending this arc?)
- Agravity Boys (?)
- Moriking (?)

And that's not even counting the last batch, which can start dying in a few weeks if they keep cancelling series at 15 chapters.

Normal business for Jump, but from the last batch Ayakashi is very safe for a while and unless Cop and Dolphin bombs harder than Hungry Marie in sales, i doubt that the series is going to end in less than 20ish chapters even if it starts to die in the rankings.

fourth place means nothing more. Bone collection ranked 3rd in the first rank and was canceled in chapter 15.

I think you should wait until chapter 10 or volume sales to know the real situation of the series.

So whoever is celebrating the position of Cop and Dolphin and Ayakashi triangle, should wait a little longer to not be mistaken as happened with Moriking.

veteran manga is usually canceled with 4 or 5 volumes, to use the case of shibashe and kishimoto as an example.

True. Good intital rankings (as in plural, Bone Collection's one good spot surely didn't save it) will only save you from a U19. If their volumes sell below the criteria and no growth is present for subsequent volumes, the axe looms closer...

Hard Boiled MIGHT be axed if it doesn't get better
CSM will end in a year or less

And there's another one. he has to sell well in the 1st volume and increase sales in the next volumes.
You can't have good sales only in one volume. And then have a drop in the 2nd volume onwards.

Ghostwriter being cancelled kinda hurts :/
I don't really read new manga because I know just how brutal Jump is but when I do it tends to stick, the manga I read since day 1 because I thought "No way this gets cancelled" have been:

  • Death Note: It was so unique no way it would get axed. (Plus it had art from the artist of Hikaru no go?! I was super sold haha)
  • Gintama: Dropped it after a while, but I knew since the start a samurai manga with aliens had to be popular haha.
  • Reborn: Dropped it after it stopped being funny and got to battles.
  • To Love Ru: Yabuki Kentaro's art + ecchi= no way this gets cancelled.
  • Bakuman: From the creators of DN+ interesting premise, surely not cancelled.
  • K.O Sen: I liked the art and its premise, but it was very generic, like I knew it wasn't that unique but still wanted to read it.
  • Double Arts: It was a unique concept, still hurts it got axed.
After Double Arts cancellation I just didn't care about new series anymore, it hurt that much that I'd just not read any new manga until it had at least say 5 volumes so it was "safe" (I know 5 volumes isn't really that safe, but safer I guess). Anyways I hadn't read a new manga from chapter 1 since Double Arts (That was in 2008), even though I knew there were some "safe" manga to read for some reason they just didn't appeal to me (e.g. Toriko or Assasination Classroom, Toriko because it was promoted like crazy by Jump since its beginning, AC because it got great reviews/word of mouth since chapter 1 IIRC).. I also had a hunch Shokugeki no Soma would stick, but didn't start reading it until after its anime adaptation.

Meh.. So yeah, anyways this year with me having more free time than usual due to the pandemic I decided to start a weekly serial.. And I really thought
Time Paradox Ghostwriter could be something special.

It kinda was.. And I had already started it... And it was a fine manga, but after a couple of chapters the story felt rushed, "So this is how a canceled manga feels to read, huh?", it was clear the author had been told the manga would get canceled if its ranks didn't improve and was trying to rush to the "good parts" of the story he/she had planned out... Alas, we know what happened.

Opinion with some spoilers about Time Paradox Ghostwriter's problems:
For me the problem with the story was the very premise itself, the main character is basically a plagiarist which we are supposed to cheer for?...
If I were the author and seen what people thought online I would have changed the story after a couple of chapters, incentivize the MC to cancel the manga he had been plagiarizing and actually write one for himself.
It was just hard to sympathize with the MC (I cant even remember his name tbh) and that's not something you want in your manga, I think.

Nah, Zipman, Guardian and TPG didn't got good first rankings and it showed in the final results, trying to diminish a first great ranking in the top 5 just because 1 example isn't really good thing to do, Moriking also has been doing pretty fine in the ranking overall, it got weeks in the "middle to top 5", not only 1 or 2 times, not to mention a also early color page, this is falling in that thing i commented weeks ago about acting like SJ did a "mistake" with Moriking without even knowing what the magazine expected from the sales when they're the ones who most knew what expect from pre orders and stuff, people here did the same mistake of taking series like Agravity Boys as dead even before the first volume released and here we are.

It's not that normal, I mean, WSJ is well on its way to break the record of most new series launched in a year ever (or at least since 1997).

Yeah, and it didn't help that there were barely any other characters to root for either. You can go a bit slow on either the story or the characters, but not both.

It already broke, it will be 16 with Bokura, ofc counting the fiscal year. Normal business with the cancelation stuff, is just that we had a new 2016 with many veterans ending and a forced cancelation with AA.

I'm not detracting from the great position, but unfortunately that doesn't mean anything.
The jump was wrong in the Moriking and bone collection positions so nothing prevents a third error from occurring.

And it wasn't just this year. In 2019, the top positions of the last saiyuki and Kamio yui were also liars, and the two were canceled.

@Shinuki no Reborn :

Haha well, I mostly read it because I started reading weekly manga back in like 2003/2004 ish and wanted to read some comedy (Before that I read mostly already finished series like Hoshin Engi, Hikaru no Go, or the ongoing Ichigo 100%) and Reborn was initially advertised as a comedy (IIRC the first volume cover is just Reborn's huge babyface haha, it was clearly going to be a gag manga until it just wasn't, which admittedly was a good decision on Amano's part because it became a huge hit, which maybe wouldn't have happened if it had stayed comedy).

At the time I just didn't care to read another battle shonen in Jump (Keep in mind we already had the holy trinity in arguably their best moments) so another battle manga was just too much for me back then.
But I might buy it since it's been recently published in my country (Mexico) and have felt like it might be a time to revisit the franchise.

Now that I think about it all the other manga I read were specifically non-battle Manga: Death Note, Gintama, Reborn, To Love Ru, Bakuman, Double arts... K.O Sen being the exception, but at that time I probably had already dropped BLEACH and Naruto so another battle manga was Ok.

This is the same of saying starting in the bottom doesn't mean anything when over 95% of the cases for both ways end up going the predictable route, who starts in the top 5 gets popular or at least a longer running than expected and who gets in the bottom, is canceled.

Both Saiyuki and Yui didn't started in the top 5 and Yui still survived for over 30 chapters and the rankings weren't even that bad tbh

Also, again with the "wrong" thing, how Jump was wrong with Moriking? since it started to be ranked it only got 2 times in the bottom, got a color page, promotions, so we have the sales that ofc weren't anything great but also not terrible too, it can perfectly grow from that in the 2nd volume, like i said, what a hurry to declare the series as something dead kkkk

It indeed is, I just tend to write way more than I should, lol. But yes, I'm pretty sure the existence of people with less knowledge that complains for the sake of it is not an exclusive treat of western readership. I don't know, there was this guy who bought around 50 copies or so of Time Paradox, and back then some guy also bought an insane amount of ne0;lation Volume 1. I'm pretty sure both felt sad and complained too. But that's what it is.
I'm sorry I didn't reapond till now, but I also tend to write a lot more than I should as well, so I know how it feels. xD

And wow. I really feel bad for those guys. They honestly didthe best they can to support the series.

And starting in the top 5 did not prevent the bone collection from being canceled, just like Saiyuki and Kamiu yui.

Even though Kamiu yui lasted more than 30 chapters, they were still canceled in the end.

We can't confirm 100% of Toc's positions.

Yes, you have rare cases like Bone Collection and the opposite like Sket Dance that started in last place and became a success, still don't change the fact that almost everything that start there gets canceled and vice-versa.

It wasn't just Bone collection. It also happened to Moriking, Kamiu yui, Saiyuki, Mitama.
