Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I wonder when we’ll get a new serialization round. Probably after GFC, I guess. Wonder what are your favorites out of all the newbies that premiered this year.

Cop and Dolphin
(Zipman)
Magu-chan
Phantom Seer
(Time Paradox Ghostwriter)
Ayakashi Triangle
Moriking
High School Family
Me & Roboco

Not listed are those that I didn’t read, dropped, or just didn’t straight out liked

F-Ken (from the author of assassination classroon)

Any of them would be more interesting than the manga that jump has today.
Hard disagree on that. F-Ken was quite meh, if Matsui comes back, I sincerely hope it is with something different.

I agree that F-ken was meh, more or less would bring more variety, different from what we have today.

I’ll just say that the complaints of the action being sudden is all fair. Not quite sure about OOC, though. Still waiting till the end of the arc before I fully evaluate.

This is the order in which I currently enjoy them the most. Though it is changing from week to week. For example Roboco and Ayakashi used to be a lot lower, but I've started to enjoy them a lot more than before. Meanwhile Magu-chan, Cop and Dolphin and Moriking have dropped lower over the past few chapters.

Some of these changes surprise me because I enjoyed Magu-chan's first chapter way more than all the other first chapters from its batch. Meanwhile the first chapters from Ayakashi and Roboco were the ones I enjoyed the least by far. However they are starting to feel a lot more refreshing than most other series. Especially Roboco seems to be getting better and better with each chapter.

Didn't even bother to finish Guardian of the Witch and Zipman, so not counting them. Agree with the general consensus that Moriking has been declining considerably in the last few chapters and that Magu-chan sometimes can be hit or miss. AB is kind of a guilty pleasure, I really like the characters and the vibe they give together so I can somehow enjoy even the weaker chapters. Undead is making me hyped and fascinated by the world and characters more than any other jump series in recent years and Mashle is just really competent in everything it does, I find it very easy for anyone to enjoy and that's something admirable

High Tier
1. Mashle - Easily my favorite from this year. Absolute gem.
2. Burn Za Witchu - Kubo greatness. Especially that last chapter
3. Magu-chan - Adorable, wholesome stuff. Sad it might not survive
4. High School Family - Hilarious, comedy gold.

Mid Tier

5. Cop and Dolphin - Typical hilarious Tamura stuff that was missing in Hungry Marie. Hope this sticks around but wouldn't hold my breath
6. Phantom Seer - Generic but not bad. Intriguing enough.

Meh Tier

7. Robocco - Jokes that landed were great. But comedy is definitely for another generation.

Ew No Tier
8. TPGW - What started out intriguingly well but became an absolutely disastrous mess in the end
9. Ayakashi Triangle - Eh. I liked the first chapter but the ecchi elements is not for me. Dropped it.

Haven't read the others.
UxU I have read 3 chapters but didn't get past it.

Curiosity since I'm bored. For me, beat worldwide the mark of 30 million of copies in circulation is what puts a Jump title in the tier of "magazine pillar". From 1976 to 1990 we have had practically one title per year that reached that mark:
Kochikame (1976), Cobra (1978), Kinnikuman (1979), Dr.Slump (1980), Captain Tsubasa (1981), Hokuto no Ken (1983), Dragon Ball (1984), City Hunter (1985) (Sakigake Otokojuku almost reached that mark, but it ended in 27 million), Saint Seiya (1986), JoJo (1987), Rokudenashi Blues and BASTARD (1988), Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken (1989), Yu Yu Hakusho and Slam Dunk (1990).

Then we had 3 years without a Jump title getting that mark (and practically the only Jump title that got +5 million copies from these 3 years would be NuBe from 1993), but things got resumed from 1994 to 2004:
Kenshin (1994), Yu-Gi-Oh (1996), One Piece (1997), HunterxHunter and Shaman King (1998), Prince of Tennis and Naruto (1999), Bleach (2001), Gintama, Death Note and Hitman Reborn (2004).

From 1976 to 2004 we've got practically one Jump title that got +30 million copies in circulation, but starting in 2005 to current year, things changed radically. In this period the only manga that managed to beat the 30 million mark are Kuroko no Basket (2009) (and Kuroko barely crossed the line; is at 31 million), Haikyuu (2012), My Hero Academia (2014) (28 million copies in Japan + 5 by VIZ + 1 in France confirmed so far), and Kimetsu no Yaiba (2016).

Basically: 1976-1990: 15 titles.
1994-2004: 11 titles.
2005-2020: 4 titles.

If we check the list of titles that have sold more than 20 million copies in circulation but less than 30, we have 4-5 more titles from the post-2004 era: The Promised Neverland at 25 million, Assassination Classroom at 25 million, Toriko at 20 million and Shokugeki at 20 million (then D-Grayman at 25 million too and which is more or less currently running, Sakigake and the 27 mark that I mentioned before, Hikaru no Go at 25 million, NuBe at 24, Hoshin Engi at 22, and Eyeshield21 and Rookies at 20 (Katsura as author has 25 million copies, the 15 from Video Girl Ai plus the 10 from I's).

I'd say being between 20 and 30 million copies worldwide is like the door to the pillar status, which for me is achieved when you get the 30 million mark (I could rise the mark to 35 million, if so then Kuroko at 31 million and Reborn and Death Note at 30 million copies would lose that status. I'd say Death Note is a special case however since it got 30 million copies with just 12 volumes).

I want to focus in the post-2004 era again. Is digital sales the main reason we stopped getting a title achieving +30 million copies of circulation every year or every two years? Will Neverland be able to reach the 30 million number? The other manga in current Jump that could achieve that mark too is Jujutsu Kaisen but is too early (let's see first if it reachs 20 million and how much it would last).

PS: If we rise the bar higher, after 2001 only Gintama and Kimetsu could be considered as titans with +50 million copies (and we could include Haikyuu if we set the bar at 40 million). Before 2001, a lot of the mentioned titles on the list earlier are +50 million copies sellers.

Basically: 1976-1990: 15 titles.
1994-2004: 11 titles.
2005-2020: 4 titles.
From the 1976-1990 era 4 series reached 100 million mark slam dunk, jojo, dragon ball, kochikame.

From the 1994-2004 era 3 series reached the 100 million mark: one piece, naruto, bleach.

And from the 2005-2020 only demon salyer.

And we have to take into account how long each series haas been in circulation (jojo relatively recently has reached 100 million) which makes demon slayer success all the more impressive, to put this into prespictive only 17 series have managed to reach 100 million copies in circulation (most of them before the year 2000 with only bleach, demon slayer and attack on titan being from the 2000s era)

I'd bet on another batch this year just after GFC, yeah. As for my ranking of the 2020 serialisations so far:

I Like to Imagine Nakano Bowing at Kubo's Doorstep to Convince Him to Publish More Burn the Witch Tier:
1. Burn the Witch - Kubo greatness. Final chapter is among my favourites of the entire year (only Haikyuu!! beats it)

Can't Wait to Read It Each Week Tier:
2. Phantom Seer - Fantastic art, really enjoying the banter between the main duo, hopeful for how the world building could expand into this being more than an Exorcism of the Week series, but right now I'm a fan. It's a good example of something that's good because its simple yet well executed.
3. Mashle - Enjoyed the comedic start, then started to get a bit tired of the gags, but am now loving the hybrid of action-comedy it has going. Really hopeful for the future of the series and glad it's already popular.
4. High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku - Probably the best panelled/paced series in the magazine right now. It's only going to go higher from here because there's so few chapters and they're half-length, so there's not too much to go off of. I can see (and want it to) stick around in the final spot of the magazine for good.
5. Me & Roboco - Expectations were low going in but it's made me laugh every single week. I kind of love it. Thrilled that it's had the best rankings of its batch and hope it stays that way to become the new Doraemon of the 2020's (I'm joking (or maybe not)).

Managed to Go From My Least Favourite At One Point To A Solid Read Tier:
6. Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin - I was so harsh on this at first, but then again it was aimless and unfunny. This little arc that's just concluded has been a step-up though, hope it continues on that trajectory.

I'm Entertained But At What Cost? Tier:
7. Time Paradox Ghostwriter - I'll tell you this, I was never once bored. I was annoyed for seven chapters, blown away by one, and amused by the morally questionable train wreck that followed until its death.
8. Agravity Boys - It makes me chuckle but damn I wish it took itself a little more seriously. The author's ability to last place in the TOC and still survive this long is half of the fun at this point.
9. Our Blood Oath - The most biazarelly paced series I've read in a long time. It's kind of bad but I'm still curious to see what happens. However, the choices do read as very amateurish so far.

How the Mildly Amusing Have Fallen Tier:
10. Moriking - This was a perfectly fine gag manga until at some point it kind of stopped being funny anymore and the rankings just made me sad. It has competition with Me & Roboco, and I know who I'd pick (and seemingly the WSJ readers have as well).

People Seem to Like These But I Don't Tier:
11. Undead Unluck - I put this in the same camp as Toriko; it's a hyper-masculine battle shonen with slightly-off character art and cluttered panelling that ticks the boxes for a lot of shonen fans but just isn't for me. I wouldn't say it's actually a bad series.
12. Magu-chan: God of Destruction - It's charming in a way, but the art is among the poorest I've known from a WSJ series (not as bad as Bone Collection though).
13. Ayakashi Triangle - I just don't like ecchi. But I've gotten into the recent habit of reading every series in WSJ weekly.

Didn't Read:
14. Zipman!!
15. Guardian of the Witch
16. Bone Collection

Question: which series had the strongest start (sales wise) for their first 3-5 volumes since 2014 (MHA)?

Boruto's first 5 volumes, although declining in sales over time, sold more than all the other series after My Hero Academia combined. The first volume alone sold almost 360,000 copies in Oricon and the first 5 volumes sold collectively more than 1.3 million copies.

How do we predict Burn the Witch Volume 1 will sell? And how low would it have to be for people to consider it a failure? I'm already anticipating some people will say so if it doesn't reach Bleach levels from the get-go.

Burn The Witch could sell 20k a volume and it'll be a success for Kubo.
It was a side thing he did for fun and now he's gonna earn money from it. There is no scenario in which this is a failure for him.

I'm curious what the order of biggest first volumes is of the 20s series. I'd guess something like

Ass Class > MHA > RxL > Neverland > ?
