I wonder when we’ll get a new serialization round. Probably after GFC, I guess. Wonder what are your favorites out of all the newbies that premiered this year.
I'd bet on another batch this year just after GFC, yeah. As for my ranking of the 2020 serialisations so far:
I Like to Imagine Nakano Bowing at Kubo's Doorstep to Convince Him to Publish More Burn the Witch Tier:
1. Burn the Witch - Kubo greatness. Final chapter is among my favourites of the entire year (only Haikyuu!! beats it)
Can't Wait to Read It Each Week Tier:
2. Phantom Seer - Fantastic art, really enjoying the banter between the main duo, hopeful for how the world building could expand into this being more than an Exorcism of the Week series, but right now I'm a fan. It's a good example of something that's good because its simple yet well executed.
3. Mashle - Enjoyed the comedic start, then started to get a bit tired of the gags, but am now loving the hybrid of action-comedy it has going. Really hopeful for the future of the series and glad it's already popular.
4. High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku - Probably the best panelled/paced series in the magazine right now. It's only going to go higher from here because there's so few chapters and they're half-length, so there's not too much to go off of. I can see (and want it to) stick around in the final spot of the magazine for good.
5. Me & Roboco - Expectations were low going in but it's made me laugh every single week. I kind of love it. Thrilled that it's had the best rankings of its batch and hope it stays that way to become the new Doraemon of the 2020's (I'm joking (or maybe not)).
Managed to Go From My Least Favourite At One Point To A Solid Read Tier:
6. Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin - I was so harsh on this at first, but then again it was aimless and unfunny. This little arc that's just concluded has been a step-up though, hope it continues on that trajectory.
I'm Entertained But At What Cost? Tier:
7. Time Paradox Ghostwriter - I'll tell you this, I was never once bored. I was annoyed for seven chapters, blown away by one, and amused by the morally questionable train wreck that followed until its death.
8. Agravity Boys - It makes me chuckle but damn I wish it took itself a little more seriously. The author's ability to last place in the TOC and still survive this long is half of the fun at this point.
9. Our Blood Oath - The most biazarelly paced series I've read in a long time. It's kind of bad but I'm still curious to see what happens. However, the choices do read as very amateurish so far.
How the Mildly Amusing Have Fallen Tier:
10. Moriking - This was a perfectly fine gag manga until at some point it kind of stopped being funny anymore and the rankings just made me sad. It has competition with Me & Roboco, and I know who I'd pick (and seemingly the WSJ readers have as well).
People Seem to Like These But I Don't Tier:
11. Undead Unluck - I put this in the same camp as Toriko; it's a hyper-masculine battle shonen with slightly-off character art and cluttered panelling that ticks the boxes for a lot of shonen fans but just isn't for me. I wouldn't say it's actually a bad series.
12. Magu-chan: God of Destruction - It's charming in a way, but the art is among the poorest I've known from a WSJ series (not as bad as Bone Collection though).
13. Ayakashi Triangle - I just don't like ecchi. But I've gotten into the recent habit of reading every series in WSJ weekly.
Didn't Read:
14. Zipman!!
15. Guardian of the Witch
16. Bone Collection
