is Black Clover considered a success? it has near the same in circulation ( 12 million). seems pretty low given its popularity
In short, yes, it is.

its not a big hit or pillar or anything but its a success, the anime especially seems to get good viewership outside of japan and manga does decent in sales (150K+ fm)

obviously its nothing compared to sxf which could hit kimetsu tier with a good adapation imo
Let's not get carried away here.. Spy x Family and Kimetsu's sales patterns are nothing alike.

Spy x Family (IMO) kinda is like Assassination Classroom, a good seller before its anime adaptation BUT didn't receive a huge boost from it. There are other examples that huge sellers (Like million sellers before anime adaptation) don't get huge boosts (Think how Tokyo revengers, kimetsu, jujutsu sold 10x or more their numbers post anime, which is pretty normal for a battle manga that gets popular, those are huge boosts.
An already popular series might get a modest boost, but nothing close to that).

We DO have a new variable, Kimetsu kids (I have seen the term get thrown around here and in japanese cites iirc, so no, it's not something I invented), which basically is people (not even only kids) who got exposed to anime/manga thanks to Kimetsu, so maybe Spy X Family can get a boost from those, who knows... But I think most people who would buy Spy X Family already knows about it thanks to word of mouth, but who knows, the manga landscape has certainly changed after Kimetsu No Yaiba, so this new group of readers might certainly work differently from previous demographics. (Just look at how Jujutsu Kaisen was selling super well too.)

Getting 150+ anime episodes, a movie, a console game, a mobile game, multiple light novels, a spinoff, and being one of tv tokyo top properties for several quarters, in addition to selling 12 mln volumes is definitely considered a success.
Exactly.
Also, I think we need to rethink what a success is for WSJ now.
A couple of years ago, we could use the number of volumes sold in Japan as a metric, but with globalization, the sales ratio for some manga has been getting bigger and bigger, like My Hero Academia.
I know that if a title has not Japanese sales it would die in WSJ anyways before being licensed, so I guess the main indicator will always be local sales, but, and I have been thinking this for a while... If Japan's market keeps decreasing (And it has been decreasing, Kimetsu and JJK are more the exception than the rule) and worldwide markets keep increasing (Just look at USA's increase) maybe one day we will have a manga that sells almost as well worldwide than in Japan.

Do you guys know why Shueisha doesn't release worldwide circulation numbers more often for series? We got recently BC with 15 million and MHA with 50 million but in case for other series like Haikyuu it never got worldwide numbers and many other series, is it because Shueisha doesn't want to or the number isnt big enough for them to make the announcement 🤔
They usually release numbers when there is an important milestone or something like that. Maybe when Haikyuu gets another season or something like that.
It might be because worldwide numbers aren't big for that series maybe. (Which for sports series might be the case, though I have seen Haikyuu has been selling good in USA last time I checked).

Spread cp, poll contest and now even a official Twitter account? Good anniversary celebration, and to think many (me too) were worried and thinking Magu-chan was already dead, seems quite alive right now

Will he be an instant hit? Or must he go through the same trials his predecessors before him went through first?

In all seriousness, I think it has decent chances to succeed, or at least have respectable sales. Wishing him all the best.

Similar artstyle, yes. But the woman looks borderline nothing like Mt.Lady.

If I had to compare her design to any MHA character, I’d say maybe Nana

Seems quite protected by the editorial, you mean.

Dont know about protection/bias but is indeed a lot of stuff out of nowhere announced for the 1st anniversary, maybe is just very popular with the magazine readers.
