I just saw a comment from horikoshi discussing his shoulder issues due to writing, and it made me really ponder about when the ending of MHA will be, I think it’s going to be in a couple to a few months at most. Which is for the best, his health is more important and his career shouldn’t have to end after one successful series, especially since he has commented about wanting to write about other things such as horror.

That's what I suspected too, but he also had those comments at Jump Festa where he said that the series could go on longer than he expected, further into 2023. So I'm not quite sure what he's planning. At the point in the story where we are, we could blitz to the end fairly quickly, but I won't complain if he does want to flesh some more stuff out and give more characters their climactic moments.

Here I am, a day earlier but I won't have time for the rest of the week so I am posting it now.
It's a Jumpless week, so when I can't rank anything I just introduce a new episode of...

Jump Retro Review

It works like this: I think of a chapter of any series in Jump history that is important for historical or personal reasons, then I wonder: "what was the magazine doing when this chapter was published?". So I search for every available translated chapter from that particular ToC, and I review all those I can find in order to have a snapshot of which series were ongoing and at what part of the story they were in certain point in time. It's like reading an issue of Jump of the past!

Previous episodes:
Issue #17, 1999: the one where Luffy and the gang walked to Arlong Park, JoJo classic concluded and Yabuki was debuting with a later axed manga.
Issue #12, 2005: the one where the battle between L and Light had a winner, Matsui debuted with Neuro and many other series delivered their own historical chapter.
Issue #22, 1985: the one where I tried reviewing an issue of the '80 and it was so difficult that I swore to never do that again.

So for this week, we are going to cover this issue:
https://comicvine.gamespot.com/weekly-shonen-jump-2142-no-45-2011/4000-365479/

Issue #45 of 2011, eleven years ago. After facing so many difficulties with the '80s, I wanted a test myself with a relatively easy issue. There are many series of the early '10s that were considered well estabilished at that point, with more or less all genres covered, and some of the "hidden gems" that are still brought up today from time to time. A pretty interesting look at what was the situation of Jump at this point in time.

Here are the chapters that I couldn't cover this time:
Inumarudashii 150
Kochikame 1716
and...that's it? Whoa, definitely easier than that '80s issue. As always, if anyone knows where I can find any of these series, you can PM and I will gladly update my ranking.

So, without further ado, here is the ranking of the issue that I covered because of...a mistake, actually. But it will be clearer once we get through it:
1. Bakuman 151: This was a surprisingly exciting chapter. To fight against the new zombie one-shot from Eiji, the main duo decides to create…Death Note? At least at the beginning, then they decide to go mainstream vs. mainstream and the dialogue that follows gets so pumped up that you wish you could read their work yourself. Bakuman is sometimes boring and sometimes great, and this chapter definitely falls in the second category.
2. Kuroko no Basket 137: This is 30ish chapters away from the point where the Mangaplus re-edition arrived, so I got hugely spoiled in many aspects that I didn’t expect. All I want to say without spoiling you too is that the chapter revolves around a couple of actions, but they are VERY exciting and probably this is peak Kuroko (at least until now).
3. Sket Dance 205: I apparently bumped into an important chapter. There is a graduation ceremony and a farewell speech of a senior named Agata. Such speech is very impactful and I wonder what kind of character this Agata could be…maybe some sort of rival-turned-friend? Anyway, I am now sold on this series and I will surely catch up to it when Witch Watch ends. (by the way, this series was also very high on ToC at this point)
4. Gintama 373: Or should I say “Kintama 2”? The main character has been wiped out of the memory of everyone and replaced by an impostor…kicking off one of the most hilarious mini-arc of the series! In the end finally someone recognized him and it’s time for some usual Gintama badassery. In short, a chapter with everything this series has to offer.
5. Tutor Hitman Reborn!! 357: We are setting up the final arc here. As the chapter title says, dad is coming home and all characters are involved in the preparation of an epic battle royale. I remember being extremely hyped for the start of this arc and then extremely disappointed by the outcome. Here we are still in the “hyped” part so high ranking for this one.
6. Toriko 161: It is an issue full of arc setups. This one is for the gourmet casino arc, that I loved. We meet an old friend (Match) and get acquainted with the next enemy (Livebearer). We are also hinted at a larger scale plot event about Gourmet World. This was peak Toriko, and even the ToC ranking shows that.
7. HunterXHunter 320: I wanted to review the issue with the the chapter that ends the Chimera Arc, and I thought I did it, only to find out too late that it actually happened two weeks earlier. So this time we are deep in the Election Arc, where a recently debuting but often mentioned character imposes his cunning set of rules to others. A strategy chapter which is not too heavy is a pass in my book. Bonus points for a lot of familiar faces reappearing at the end of the chapter.
8. Naruto 559: Everytime I choose an issue depending on a particular chapter, it turns out to be a pivotal issue for another series…this time is when a new enemy resurrection approaches and is revealed to be a hugely major character, implying that another character whose identity we assumed all along was actually lying the whole time. I swear I don’t do this on purpose!
10. Nurarihyon no Mago 174: I remember watching the anime of this series and not liking it much. This chapter was hella cool though! An enraged, scary and apparently melting Rikuo unleashes all of his rage on his evil enemy, who has no other choice but to watch him as he strikes him to death. The city is saved, but the damage is relevant. So, probably late Mago was way better than early Mago?
11. One Piece 642: The battle at the Fishman Island has just begun. This is the period were he had to get accostumed to the time-skipped Mugiwaras, and this battle had the purpose to showcase all of their new powers. So in this chapter we have good moments for Brook, Franky, Robin, Chopper and even Jimbe, while Zoro is hinted for the next week. Not so special chapter today, but very special when it came out.
12. Magico 31: I was curious for this series since it is still much discussed even now. We are in the middle of a magic contest, and we have the chance to meet our two protagonists who are very hot-blooded. The “husband bomb” at the end is a nice idea. Overall it seems a decently written adventure series, but not so different from the ones that struggle being in the magazine today (Ginka&Gluna tier). So this is more or less where I rank this kind of series usually.
13. Beelzebub 128: For this series I read the beginning and the end, and this chapter is on the middle of which I don’t know anything about. Ogata and Kunieda are with a badass girl which flashbacks on her youth and was probably a couple with the father of one of the two. I don’t think it was a particularly interesting chapter, probably it would have been if I knew the background more. I still miss Hard-boiled Cop and Dolphin.
14. Bleach 468: There is a major fight in the middle of the Fullbringer arc, that shows all the flaws of this part of the series. The power of the Fullbringer is too broken to be interesting. What is interesting is Ikkaku scolding his underling, this saves the chapter from hitting rock bottom of this ranking.
15. Enigma 53: Of this series, I remember liking a lot the first arc, and then watching it losing its charm for therest of it. Here we are close to the end (or to the axe, depending whom you ask) and I was going to rank it high at first, with the Cannibal backstory and all, but then everything was resolved and all misteries were cleared in the span of 4-5 pages and I got hugely disappointed…oh well, series was going to end in other three chapters anyway.
16. Medaka Box 118: After a battle with a clear winner, many people are discussing about whose side they should take in an upcoming clash of factions. At least this is what I understand. This series is…complicated? Didn’t expect that. I would have probably enjoyed more the chapter before this with the battle itself.
17. ST&RS 15: I was curious about this series too, expecting a fantasy adventure like Magico, but I didn’t expect to get school drama instead. Sure, they are studying to become astronauts and there is this space mistery and all of that, but all of the chapter was girl trying to talk with guy about something but being too shy for that. I don’t know if I bumped into the most boring chapter of the series by accident, for for sure it failed to impress me.
18. Kurogane 7: This is a series about Kendo. The first part is not so interesting, a lot of rules exposition and the debut of the resident coach, nothing that you can’t find in a recently axed spokon. With the final pages comes a “supernatural” twist and things get a better turn, but still far from the strongest chapter in this issue.
19. Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa 14: In this romcom we have a school trip with some sort of hiking challenge. Every trope is set: we have the tomboy rival, the embrassing situations, the touch of supernatural (with a mirror that puts people floating in darkness somehow) and a misunderstanting resolved by a guy appearing outta nowhere and explaining everything for no reason. Not a masterpiece of writing for what I see here.

And that's it for today, hope you enjoyed this relatively short trip to eleven years ago. Happy new year everyone and for the next episode of Jump Retro Review see you in...two weeks??? Oh gosh, I already have to think about what to review next!!

Will Hideaki Sorachi, creator of Gintama ever return to Shonen jump? I’m not family with his history 😅

The only Bnha op I liked ( both song and visuals ) is very first one and I am not that crazy over Eve so personally not too excited

i feel its still going to end in 2023...probably depends on if he goes deep into more backstory for random antagonists again...that whole thing with the heteromorphs...felt added on last minute.

PPPPPP: A nice introspect chapter for the dad. Showing he still loved his wife. I wonder how the meeting with the son who took her away from him going to turn out?
Fabricant 100: Very nice chapter, presented a goal and a conflict of interest between the characters.

1. My Hero Academia: Finally after a long time a chapter that I really liked. I felt for the first time the sense of desperation that the author was trying to portray all this time, and the return at the end was very awaited for me, since it foreshadows the return of one of my favourite characters. Very well done.
2. Fabricant 100: I love the ogical reason for having to find a convoluted way to let Fabricant #100 show her true nature, and the idea that it is dangerous to assume you can relate to Fabricants as if they were humans. This series is getting stronger and stronger.
3. Undead Unluck: Great chapter, that does justice to a character that died too soon because it ended up being cannon fodder in a time where this series could very well be axed. Pro tip: read this chapter and the subsequent ones while listening to this.
4. One Piece: I don't have much to say about this. Lots of things are going on simultaneously but since we have waited a lot for these situations to unfold, every part is worth reading.
5. Witch Watch: It's like Shinonara sets up a weird situation with the Witch Watchers and then ponders "what would logically happen in a situation like this?". Typical Gintama school.
6. Ginka and Gluna: I don't remember why they entered the guild in the first place. I'm worried that too many goals are piling up and resolving all of them will be difficult, and will lead up to a rushed finale in the case of an axe. I'm having fun though.
7. The Ichinose Family Deadly Sins: The thing I liked the most is that dad was given some precious screen time. For now this series is lighter than Takopi, even if it is darker than your average Jump adventure.
8. Black Clover: As I expected, after the apparent victory the situation is dire again. Asta comes to save the day, usually I hate his protagonism with every fiber of my being but for now I can tolerate this one.
9. Blue Box: So we're entering in a new arc with a new character. I don't get why pursuing sports and love together is unacceptable, but ok. I liked the whole date between Taiki and Chinatsu.
10. Jujutsu Kaisen: The military arrives! This is a nice way to shake up the situation. Everything is going according to keikaku...a little too much even.
11. Cypher Academy: I weas exhausted like Iroha at the end, but if I pay just the right amount of attention at the puzzle and focus on the story instead, it turns out to be a pretty well-written manga.
12. Tokyo Demon Bride Story: This was a surprisingly good chapter. The supposed ramen shop owner was so weird it somehow worked, and the frog finally gets her time to shine after having been the butt monkey of the group so many times... hopefully.
13. PPPPPP: Hypnotized by the art, but I didn't understand much this time. Please don't feel in need to explain, I'll figure it out by myself next chapter.
14. The Elusive Samurai: In the end this chapter was pointless if they were to fight anyway.
15. Sakamoto Days: This series is always great at portraying action. Unfortunately I wasn't in a mood for this fight, since I don't care much about the opponent. He was the real extra all along.
16. Akane-banashi: Things have taken a weird turn. I can stand it if it won't take long, but still remains strange to see Akane trying to be flirtatious. Urara is right, it just doesn't fit her.
17. Highschool Family: Low ranked because I don't remember the character at all, but inspirational nonetheless. I hope he convinced him to eventually become an Highschool dad himself.
18. Mission: Yozakura Family: Not a problem with the chapter itself, but filler is filler anyway. Let the series catch its breath and return stronger than ever.
19. Ayakashi Triangle: Been a while since last time I dropped a comment about this. There isn't a lot to say about the chapter itself, so a quick thought on what's going on after moving to Jump+: shameless!!
20. Me and Roboco: Pretty funny chapter, but I think that HxH parodies have been overused at this point. I wouldn't mind something fresh as a base for the chapter.
21. Mashle: Not your usual Mash fight because he's having trouble defeating him. But still your usual Mash fights because of mood-killing remarks and convoluted fighting moves that feel not necessary at all.
22. Ichigoki's under control!!: All I want to say is that this chapter had zero comments on Mangaplus while all the others had plenty. This never happened since I follow Jump regularly, even with the worst of series.

My Ranking and Thoughts for the Series I Follow:

Akane: The fact that her friend can read right through her, that's she's doing it for selfish reasons, not for any change in character lmao. That's great! Not sure what the exact approach is for her to correctly tell the story but that's also the fun, seeing how she should go about it!

G&G: What say nay?! This series seems to be surviving??? Granted, it could always pull some stunt like one of the elites captured the rests and has them all for one final battle, but you'd imagine they would've set that up now. So, it looks like it'd survive by the next round, interesting...

F100: The story is still very interesting to me, and the scene with 100 outside without Ashibi was truly quite chilling. I NEED more of that from this series. Ashibi is just a kid but he is intelligent, I wonder what he has planned with 100 joining Mortsafe???

MHA: Not gonna lie, this is one of the more hype chapters of MHA I've had in a while. The school festival arc, was one of the first arcs I read so to have La Brava back after SO long, it's amazing! And, I love how hopeless it all feels, defintely need some more of this

CA: This is actually a better chapter to me than the last few have been. I like that the "special glasses" aren't just given to the protagonist and that they have to prove themselves as a result to be better than the rest. We also got Toshusai backstory a little bit and I am sure she's going to be VERY interesting moving forward.

IFDS: I already know that the next chapter is going to begin some sorta misunderstanding but what bothers me is that Tsubasa is doing everything he can as a big brother and Shori just being uncommunicative which is making him do stupid stuff. Still an interesting read but imo, could be framed better.

P6: While I love these cinematic-type chapters, they always go by so fast!!! The ending looks exciting, a confrontation between the dad and Lucky, and what exactly is going on with the dad's psyche. Definitely seems obsessed over perfection but acknowledges inside he's not perfect either...

BC: Lucius' squad really said, "Lets speed this up a little". Big shock that Yami didn't kill the entire clan lol. Who would've guessed? But, at least this means that Asta will most likely be going back to the Clover Kingdom soon!

IUC: ...I don't like how that virus looks. In other cases, still not one of the series' worst chapters. Misao had some nicer moments this chapter and it was fun to see the parallels / puns on human-to-technology inferences (i.e. viruses). I hope we get more of that.

TDBS: I just...can't muster the energy to care about this series when I know it's going to be axed. Like, this is the most obvious bait and while I guess it's nice for Keroru to have SOME time to shine I just don't particularly care anymore lol.

Decent issue. Glad we got a bit more characterization of another member of the Ichinose family this week. MHA was good as well. Will be ineteresting to see where Iroha ranks next week and if we'll be seeing a Ichinose color page anytime soon.
