There are usually partial rankings on Sunday/Monday at 2ch (by the poster people called "ko-neta"), which includes this week's bottom 4~6 as well as next week's color page info.

On Wednesday, the complete TOS would be posted by either Himajin or Mei at 2ch.

If you cannot read Japanese, just wait for someone to post/translate it here, or go to raw-paradise to read the French translation of the same ranking.

Re: when will Hunter X Hunter return?

Even though it's doing well in the TOC, that doesn't mean it will instantly become a top seller. After all, there's a world of difference between paying for 20 different series and paying for just one series. Given its relatively recent start, it's not that surprising that it doesn't have as intense a fanbase yet.
Toriko's high in tankoubon sales, what do you mean? It was 11th in its first two, it went up to 6th. If it's not first, is it not considered to be doing "well"?
Go back and read what I wrote... where did I say that Toriko's sales was "bad"? I've merely stated that I was surprised to see that Toriko's initial 3 day sales was less than ToLoveRu 13's data from last month.

Why was I surprised? Because as its WSJ ranking stablized, I was expecting it to be near where Bakuman is in terms of fanbase intensity. Also, without it getting hamstrung by insufficient first print (which happened to early Toriko and Bakuman tanks), there should be a more clear "jump".

Toriko 3, first 5 days: 116,789
Average: 23,357

Toriko 4, first 3 days: 83,216
Average: 27,738

Increase in Average: 18.7%

Hell, it's not even that accurate to compare the average because the data from the latter two days would pull the average down sigificantly. Just look at Gintama:

Gintama 27, first 5 days: 306,488
Average: 61,297

Gintama 28, first 3 days: 229,223
Average: 76,407

Increase in Average: 24.6%

If you take a look at the number, you can even say that Toriko's initial sales (e.g. Fanbase intensity) didn't grow at all from 3 to 4. That's what made me surprised/worried.

I have to agree with Finestela, that does make me wonder where it's going.

I'm guessing it'll just kinda bump down to second tier at absolute worst.

Do you guys think that 2008 might've been like 2004? I mean we saw a lot of series with staying power: Psyren, Mago, Toriko, Bakuman. I don't think I left anyone out...Unless Kuroko was in 08, but I thought that was in 09.

2008 was a very strong year for new series. Psyren, Mago, Toriko, and Bakuman should all last at least two years. It may not be as strong as '04; all four of those series have been massive, but '08 is certainly the strongest year since.

Kuroko was 2009, debuting in issue 2.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

It depends on how you count it... it's the 2009-02 Issue, but it was published in 2008... :p

(I'm just teasing, we would just count it according to the issue number like always ;))

-------------------------

I don't know if it's just me or someone else felt it as well... Medaka Box felt a bit... erm... like Sket Dance (and, to some extend, certain parts of Bari Haken :p) in terms of general plot line.

It wasn't that apparent in the 1-shot, but the impression is a lot strong in Chapter 1...

Anyone else got that? :/

This is how I feel word for word.

I think it could become one of my favorite new series. Ugh, I hope it lives long enough.

Consider this regarding the new series: a lot of times new series really don't sell too much or get that much notice when they first become sold or serialized. Even many series that are now hits had horrific vol. 1 sales back when they're new. Therefore, to have series like Bakuman and Toriko which have higher than usual numbers out of the gate is superior compared to how some series are from volume 1. (my best example to that is Gintama: sure it may be a Japanese phenomenon now, but vol. 1 didn't even crack the Shueisha top 20, let alone the regular one)

Exactly. The fact that Toriko is even selling this well by Volume 4 is a great sign for it. It's difficult to tell where it will end up in the future. If it continues to do well in the TOC, I certainly would expect sales to increase over the next year or so and get to the 200-300,000 per volume range.

Either way, Shueisha has to be very pleased with how well it has done out of the gate.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

You cannot compare sales of Toriko to series that droped to 10+ in rankings after 8 weeks... Also, just as there are what we would call "inflation adjusted monetary value" in economy, I'm pretty sure tank sales for 100k copies is a lot different from 100k copies from 5 years ago.

I'm not trying to discount the success of Toriko, but fact remains that we shouldn't say "Toriko's impressive sales trumped most new and old series" when there isn't really much to compare it to directly, not without some kind of model to account for certain changes in customer behaviors. (The "3 copies" practice was almost non-existence in Japan 10 years ago).

Bottom line is, by looking at the trend for Toriko, it's clear that the fanbase enthusiasm is pretty much flat for Toriko 4 when compared to that of Toriko 3. Is it cause for concern? I personally believe so.

You don't have to agree with my analysis, but it's not logical to say 100k copies back in the days should be considered the same as 100k copies now. The circumstances are different, the customers are different... I mean for crying out loud, even Shueisha's popularity is different.

Did you know that in 2002, Evangelion Vol.8 outsold Naruto 15 the first week they both came out (granted, Naruto 15 was 1 day later than Eva 8, but they were at 5 days and 6 days)? What are the odds of a 2nd/3rd place series in WSJ getting outsold by a Shounen Ace series now? (or, for other matter, ANY other non-Shueisha magazine out there?)

Sket Dance

ES 21
Mago

2009-26
Lead CP: Beelze
CP: Akaboshi, Kuroko
Extra Pages: Medaka, Psyren

First of all, take note that ToLoveRu will have a CP in 25, so don't fuss too much about Sket being down there.

However, I'm a bit surprised at Mago being over there... My theory is that it's being a place holder for ToLoveRu, and the two of them switched places for ToLoveRu's CP placement...

Beelze lead CP? That's just insane...

Kuroko CP and Medaka/Psyren extra pages = always nice :)

Oh damn. Psyren and Mago in the bottom 5. Sket being their because of the TLR color page is understandable.

The extra pages for Medaka Box and Psyren is great though. Hmm don't new series normally get a color page during their 2nd chapter too?

Jump is either pimping Beelzebub and Kuroko or they must be really popular.

Medaka does get a CP for chapter 2 in 2009-25 :)
Lead CP for 2009-25 is, of course, Akaboshi, for being chapter 1 :P

Extra pages is for chapter 3, in 2009-26

Some more series need to end. The magazine is too congested now! To-love, stop being a dick. End already!

To congested =_= The magazine is actually good right now. For once there's a nice balance of genres and styles.

Bottom line is, by looking at the trend for Toriko, it's clear that the fanbase enthusiasm is pretty much flat for Toriko 4 when compared to that of Toriko 3. Is it cause for concern? I personally believe so.
The gains Mago and Toriko made between volume 2 and 3 were really impressive. Neither looks as strong after volume 4. Toriko might not even see an increase of 10,000 copies over it's previous second. That would require it to double sales from week one, which I don't see it doing.

Hm...extra pages is literally extra pages? Or is it something else, because if it is just more pages is it really worth noting?

Well... whether you like it or not, there would always be at least one comedy romance in WSJ. ToLoveRu just happened to have enough tank sales and popularity to sustain it from getting axed for now.

Even if it gets axed, you'd still get the next romance/ecchi series in WSJ. TLR's demise wouldn't neccessary mean another series that falls more in-line with your taste would be saved.

A 25~30 pages chapter seems more likely...

The gains Mago and Toriko made between volume 2 and 3 were really impressive. Neither looks as strong after volume 4. Toriko might not even see an increase of 10,000 copies over it's previous second. That would require it to double sales from week one, which I don't see it doing.
I'm not sure about Mago, but Toriko 1 and 2 actually ran out of first print in its sales very early on, one of the contributing factor about it having depressed first week sales (and a not-so-high placement on Shueisha's first print sales ranking)
