Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

What's up with D. Gray Man at the moment?

I know it's on Hiatus, but was the news about a possible cancellation true or not?

For now, let's call it a rumor. I've not seen any official source quoted, nor posted in regards to DGM's future. The plagiarism speculation is compelling, but I'm put off by the fact that this forum is quoted as the primary source. Plagiarism is such a big deal that Japanese news would be all over it, and it would be posted in English to a site that only quotes official sources (Anime News Network for instance). Maybe, just maybe, it will alternated seasons with Hunter x Hunter from now on. H x H will appear every winter and summer. DGM will take the spring and fall. No, I'm not basing that on anything substantial.

Re: when will Hunter X Hunter return?

But, these are a different batch of series compared to those which came out last month. Yeah, you can compare them to those series, but it's difficult to judge how the series are doing relative to their previous volumes until we get second week data. There's also the fact that some series sell as more of a slow burn than others. It's difficult to make a comparison based on just 3 days of data.
It's still a clear calibration of the intensity of the fanbase. I'm not saying that Toriko 4 will sell less than ToLoveRu 14 in the long run (of course it's not going to sell less than ToLoveRu...), but the fact remains, that without the first print running out restriction that happened to Toriko 1 and 2, Toriko 4's initial sales is surprisingly slow, consider it becoming stable at the 3rd~4th place in the same time period the chapters of 4th volume was serialized.

I wonder if bookstores are slower to support new series then fans, at the moment.

Woo, I'm loving the Medaka Box Cover. The Akaboshi art looks pretty slick too.

I'm curious as to what the guy from Akaboshi is holding behind him, it seems like a pretty big sword.

Medaka Box *spazzes*

I've been craving it since I read the one-shot.

Akaboshi looks pretty good as well. o:

Does anyone know if Akaboshi is a contracted manga like Monster Hunter was or if the artist is simply making up his own story for the game?

Pretty sure it has nothing to do with any existing games or animations, since I couldn't find any game/anime exist with the same name.

The name merely implies that it might be based (loosely) to the famous Chinese novel Suikoden (Shuihu Zhuan in Chinese pinyin).

Sort of like Honshin Engi is loosely based on the Chinese novel with the same name.

Woah Suikoden, this name got my attention! Btw, the author's name is Amano Youichi...any relation to Amano Akira?

"Intensity of the fanbase" is exactly right. Toriko's in its 4th volume, while To-Love-Ru is in its 14th. It's had a lot more time to get a group of dedicated fans who will rush out to buy it the moment it comes out. Toriko is still in its beginning stages. The fact that initial sales are this good reflects well on it.

Even though it's doing well in the TOC, that doesn't mean it will instantly become a top seller. After all, there's a world of difference between paying for 20 different series and paying for just one series. Given its relatively recent start, it's not that surprising that it doesn't have as intense a fanbase yet.

Well to be fair, the tankobons aren't that expensive over at Japan. But one can't really expect for the sales to skyrocket everytime, I doubt Toriko is up there in the toc for tank sales, so it might not really make a difference in the long run, if sales do increase substantially.

inumaru dashi is the ultimate evidence that good toc doesn't mean good sales. and it finally has a weekly raw appear again! *dances about*

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

If ya got tank scans I could translate it... Inumaru.

Yeah, for whatever reason once in a while they decide to scan Jaguar and Inumaru.
I've got... 9 back issues of Jump I could scan stuff from but I really don't want to...
Also nobody'd care probably.

Toriko's high in tankoubon sales, what do you mean? It was 11th in its first two, it went up to 6th. If it's not first, is it not considered to be doing "well"?

According to this:
http://jump.shueisha.co.jp/henshu/comics/next.html
Volume 2 of Inumaru comes out next month...

Edit: I ended up changing my mind and just put everything I had up. Still, the whole series isn't there even with all the ones before 19. Since for whatever reason there are no Japanese scanners. Inumaru Dash is better to do Tankoubon Edited Mangas for, then.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

i think people are expecting bakuman level sales dominating the weekly figures or whatnot like the first volume did.

Toriko's a pretty strong seller either way it's looked at really though, especially in the knowledge it's passed the million mark.

and kewl, i have the first 18 chapters in magazine scans, but i'll have the first tank come the end of the month, so i'll contact you then

how long do we have to wait to get a series like Naruto, One Piece or Death Note? and you reckon that Togashi will ever come out of the haitus to do HxH weekly

None of us ever claimed Toriko was doing poorly, at least I didn't. Far from it. First week sales of 80,000+ by volume 4 is extraordinary. Most (non - Jump) series won't ever sell that much. Had it come out at the beginning of the tracking period it would have sold over 100,000, as volume 3 did in it's first week. I had hoped for better growth between volume 3 and 4, closer to the percentage it went up between volume 1(2), and volume 3. I'll need to compare two weeks sales before really knowing how much it really improved. My hope, but not expectation, is for it and Mago to pass the ToRa/Eyeshield tier by volume 5. Volume 3 also charted at number 6, BTW. Rank only matters so much though; the only significant series to debut in the top ten that wasn't from WSJ or SQ was Ouran High School Host Club at number 2. Only the top three had sales over 100,000. This was kind of a weak sales period.
