Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Um, what is actually the idea of Hatsukoi? I find it too much generic, just like a bunch of boy and girls who fall in love with each other.
This is pretty much it. What caught my interest was the way it was done. It was a total mess - guy A likes girl A who likes guy A's brother who likes girl B who likes girl A's brother and so on - and that's what made it interesting to follow. Had it been centered around only one of the subplots, it'd be nothing special, but that Mizuki Kawashita managed to solve so many subplots in a satisfying way in 30 chapters was pretty amazing.

Alright, I'm finished talking about Hatsukoi. Sorry for the offtopic.

Actually there was one subplot that was completely ignored, which was that aspiring mangaka guy. That sorta bugs me, even to this day.

What's that say in the corner...
Toriko anime something something decided...
FIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLERRRRRRRR AHOOOOOOY!!!

It needs to at the very least to get to chapter 100(and preferably beyond) before it should be considered for anime, the amount of filler will be annoying.

Really hope they decide to hold off on it. Though I doubt they'd put it in the corner like that if it really was an Anime for an upper-mid tier series like Toriko. It would probably get a cover page.

Isn't Toriko on chapter 60 something? That's way too early for an anime, but maybe not for an ova.

I think we have to wait at least two years to actually be animation. So, I think Toriko could become animation on summer of next year.

OH! I think that's referring to the JUMP Super Anime Tour which is some kind of road show event where they show OVAs and stuff like that...
Last year's S.A.T. featured One Piece's Romance Dawn Remake as well as Tegami Bachi's OVA and a Dragon Ball special among others.

Sweet news...

EDIT:
Article on last years S.A.T. at Anime News Network

Maybe a preview OVA announcement then. Like with Tegami Bachi.

Anyway we'll see when the raw comes out or whatever.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

D. Gray Man started an early anime, didn't it?
D.Gray-man would be special case, though, with the big-huge-break in between.

It likely was: "Let's do an anime at mm/dd/yyyy it'll be at chapter xx then, enough material" -> Hoshino has that accident or whatever -> "we already got z eps, let's just push forward with it and fill it up to a 52 ep anime" -> 'good' reception of at least the main-story based eps -> "let's continue, we got enough new chapters to animate now that we made all those awful fillers."

I don't expect many of such cases to happen in the close future.

On another note, what's with all the ecchi-bashing/hating in this thread? No need to go around making everything ecchi into some devil-impersonation. There are some good ecchi manga out there. Ok, they're currently not running in WSJ, but oh well.

It's getting annoying to see 10 'hate ecchi' posts every time an ecchi-manga starts or similar... It's fine to say you don't like a manga because "it's too ecchi for your tastes", but please don't go off stating such stuff before the manga is even out!

lol, I don't think any of us was bashing... But rather discussing why some like Hatsukoi better than Ichigo (or the other way around)

If anything, a lot of us here are ecchi lovers (rofl) :p

What appeals to me is the fact that Hatsukoi actually tries to create a complex romance relationship with a lot of different characters (as oppose to the traditional harem series). I mean one of my all time favorite Shoujo series is KareKano, and I enjoyed the way they weave in various relationships other than the protagonists.

I was half-expecting something like that from Hatsukoi Limited, but instead got even more impressed by the "no central protagonist" way of story-telling.

The unfortunately thing would be that Kawashita tried to do too much too fast, and some of the plot-lines sort of spun out of control. That is, in my opinion, what brought the series down.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

*Was a fan of both Ichigo and Hatsukoi*

While a number of sub-plots for Hatsukoi were wrapped up there were a few that weren't. I wish they could have been but I commend Kawashita for pulling the other stuff off as well as she did.

As for Toriko, I'd prefer if it had 3 years under its belt before an anime but no doubt Jump will try to push for one at the 2 year mark most likely. I'd actually love to see a Toriko OVA though.

Has Toriko still been selling as well? It's rank has been lower as of late.

Toriko has been selling well. No worries there. Of the three new hits it sells a little better then Mago, a little worse then Bakuman.

D. Gray Man did not get an early anime. The manga debuted in the spring of 2004, the anime in the fall of 2006; about two years and six months apart. The manga of Reborn debuted a week before D. Gray Man, the anime later in the same week.

Toriko's rank hasn't really been low. It was like 7th in two issues. It was 3rd and had the cover within the last month. It hasn't ever ALWAYS been third, just is up there a lot. The part this corresponds to is battles and things with Not-Toriko. His big battle is I think 8 weeks ago starting the next TOC. But I always get stuff confused about where to start counting...

And the volumes sold in like the 150,000 range.

There's a link to the last list it was on. They're generally going up. The 5th volume comes out in August IIRC.
For such new series, that's really good from all I've seen.

A lot more than that manga about the Psychic Sirens. They sell like 40,000 a volume...
Pyuu to Fuku Jaguar does 5 times better simply because of its covers.

Aren't all of the series in the mag doing well? I mean to me it looks like some of the lower ranked series are at the bottom simply because of the big number of series in the mag, coupled with new series debuting. For example, I doubt Gintama polled badly, it's just in that position due to new series and cps.

So according to the newest chapter of Bakuman, no series that sells at least 500,000 tanks is really in danger of being canceled. So i guess that means if Psyren continues to poll low and nothing drops below it, it could be in some serious danger.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

my biggest worry about psyren at the moment is how the cliffhanger about Oboro's dilemma is ever expanding into a chasm. I don't mind it, but i'm wondering if there is some affect from having one of the higher voted character's not being present since psyrens last spike into the top 5.

I dunno if that 500,000 thing means "total" or "in one volume". Because only OP and Naruto get that much... And HXH I guess.

Course, in Bakuman they also don't include anything like a delay of 8 weeks corresponding to chapters. Just whatever's in the chapter is where it's ranked.
