I personally think Iwashiro and Shimabukuro can pull it off if they tried. Shiibashi gives me the feeling that he could manage it too when I read through Mago's serious arcs.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

Kubo and Kishimoto could manage something in Ultra Jump. There is little demand for complex story telling in that magazine. Dogs has demonstrated that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Bakuman would be at home, without any changes, in Young Jump or even a Shogakukan or Kodansha seinen anthology. Technically Shimabukuro has had a seinen series; Takeshi was moved to Super Jump after his arrest. That hardly counts as it was still the same as when it ran in WSJ. Iwashiro: maybe. I don't see Oda making the switch. His style is classically shonen, firmly in the tradition of Tezuka and Toriyama, I can't imagine him wanting to switch. Since art considerations shouldn't be considered, there are plenty of shonen with better art than seinen, his drawing style would be fine.

I'm kind of wondering is Hetappi over? I know it is monthly short page work, but I didn't see for few months now. Does anyone know Hetappi is over or just in break?

Who'd make it in seinen...that's an interesting question and all depends on the mangaka.

-Definite: Ohba/Obata (more mature storytelling already, they just need to increase their contents somewhat), Matsui (somehow his weird stuff would probably fit, Sorachi (he read seinen as a kid and only is in shonen cause Gintama somehow worked...once it ends, he could easily make a jump and no one would bat an eyelash)
-Probably: Kishimoto (He may need to spend a couple years to refind himself after Naruto ends but he could probably do well there if he had to), Shimabukuro (see Takeshi's movement), Kubo (yeah I may sound weird but with maybe a writer and more liberal standards, he probably could work wonders in that genre), Yabuki (see Kubo), Usuta (sort of a weird thought but somehow I could see a comedy series of his style sort of in like a Business Jump or a Weekly Playboy...don't ask me why)

Don't think Oda would work there though, he probably would be like Toriyama and just do one-shots in shonen while in semi-retirement. (though maybe he could get into character designs for video games ala Toriyama's work on Dragon Quest or Chrono Trigger)

I left Matsui off my list since he's out of the magazine already. He definitely would be better in Young Jump. Sorachi could make the transition but would be missed, he's such a subversive mangaka. Jump needs him to take the piss out of the other mangaka. Yabuki is another one who could handle Ultra Jump but would need to work on writing to fit into Young Jump. Also he is starting a new series in SQ this January. Usutu could fit in either demographic, the fun thing about gag.

What I find interesting about Jump is how many mangaka actually do make the transition to seinen. Between old classics like Captain Tsubasa, JoJo's, Nube, Fist of the North Star, and City Hunter and the success of Inoue, Morita, and Katsura Jump artists seem to handle the demographic very well.

Hey guys, now that I take a look at v3g374's list I've got a question, To-Love ended naturally right?

It seemed to end under shady circumstances. With Yabuki's new series starting in two months, especially since it seems he will start writing again.

Question to Kaiten Sama about this:
Moderator Notice:
There are professional contests you are looking at. The Tezuka Award is very prestigious, Matsui (Neuro) and Komi Naoshi (Double Arts) were past entrants. Jump Treasure is an important new comers contest as well, just featured as a plot point in Double Arts.~ Kaiten.Sama
what do you mean by "just featured as a plot point in Double Arts"? do u mean Bakuman, or did Naoshi Komi win/participate in Treasure?
and just to clarify, Matsui and Komi won Jump's Tezuka Award? (i think I heard something about this, but just want to confirm it.)

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

Nope, Matsui and Komi won the newcomer award that was turned 2007 into "JUMP Treasure Newcomer Award", during that time known as "JUMP 12ketsu Shinjin Manga-shou" [12 magnificent personalities manga award].
Other artists that won this award and had been serialized in JUMP in the last months would be Kawaguchi Yukinori (of Hoopmen), Aimoto Shou and Fujimaki Tadatoshi who won that award with our loved "Kuroko no Basket"...

As for the Tezuka Award, I think the only mangaka who're currently serialized (or had been not too long ago) and were awarded in it were Oda, Togashi and Amano (Akaboshi's, not Reborn!'s).

Come to think of it, I think there isn't much hit series as female lead roles in Jump. I only know Jump's female lead series are Dr.Slump and Cat's Eye.

It's hard to connect to shonen readers when you show the story from a female's point of view. Bakuman explains this very well. It's not that any shonen series with a female main character is doomed to fail, but chances of it being well-received are significantly lower.

isn't that generally the case for most shounen manga and not just JUMP?
I can't really think of hit series on Magazine or Sunday that have a female lead. (unless Lucy count as a lead in FT, or Kagome in Inuyasha)

used to think any fiction with female lead/narrator to be bad (when I was kid). Double Arts completely changed that for me.

In regards to the shounen-seinen transition topic, I think Kishimoto could do it, provided he'd work on his supposed future mafia manga. Hopefully he will go that route after Naruto ends, and while he's at it he can start using more detail in his drawings again.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami from Sunday comes to mind. It is a series that ended over a decade ago back in the 90s but it had a female lead and was a hit. That mangaka currently does ZKC.

As for Jump series that have managed to do it, I honestly can't think of any recent ones. Medaka Box itself has had it rough with a female lead and you constantly get people whining about the fact she IS the lead atm and not Zenkichi. Someone could make the argument that Neuro "survived" with Yako as a lead but she was more of a co-star with him at best.

While Lucy started out as the lead character, she isn't anymore, we can all agree and say that Natsu is the lead character, but, then again, Lucy is one of the main characters. Just like how Bulma was in Dragonball and Kagome is in InuYasha.

Speaking of Hetappi, is it even scanned anymore? And are there tanks of it out?

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.3

Got a silly question on my mind considering that we're talking a bit about it on Arlong Park. Apparently they're finally opening a manga museum in Japan, which somehow in my head probably should have been done years ago (akin to the European comic museum in Brussels...which is really cool BTW, heck I heard they just opened a museum for just Herge himself in the same country, and he's an institution of European comics akin to Tezuka in manga) And it made me wonder: if they could induct mangaka into the museum akin to a "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame", what Jump ones would make it in? Off the top of my head, I pretty much came up with seven who would make it in with no problems:

-Go Nagai (though he is known for many other series that are more graphic or that he would probably be known for more, two of his most crucial, "Harenchi Gakuen" and "Mazinger Z" were both Jump series...no contest really for him)
-Osamu Akimoto (you can't run "KochiKame" for over 30 years and not get noticed...nuff said)
-Masashi Kurumada (yeah, most would say he just would get in for "Saint Seiya" alone, but "Ring ni Kakero" is massively important as well for defining a lot of sports and battle manga)
-Akira Toriyama ("Dr. Slump" changed gags, "Dragonball" changed...well, Jump, period)
-Buronson (Pretty much "the" name in more "mature" storytelling in Jump history, not just for "Fist of the North Star" but for "Doberman Detective" before it)
-Yoichi Takahashi ("Captain Tsubasa" by itself essentially made Japan a soccer nation and became a massive inspiration worldwide...that has to say something)
-Takehiko Inoue (Probably one of the biggest names to emerge from the 90s in storytelling and style via "Slam Dunk")

Other major considerations:
-Hiroshi Motomiya
-Keiji Nakazawa
-Yudetamago
-Akira Miyashita
-Tsukasa Hojo
-Tetsuo Hara
-Hirohiko Araki (probably belongs above due to the massiveness and importance of "JoJo", but somehow something in me prevents me from saying he'd get in on a "first vote")
-Masakazu Katsura
-Yoshihiro Takahashi
-Masanori Morita
-Yoshihiro Togashi (like Araki, I could see Togashi making it...but after some others get in first)
-Takeshi Obata
-Kazuki Takahashi
-Hiroshi Gamou (if he and Tsurugi Ohba are the same person ;p)
-Nobuhiro Watsuki
-Kyosuke Usuta
-Eiichiro Oda (only after OP is said and done over...then he gets in immediately)
