Nah, it wasn't an insult. I did consider asking how what people who could translate do was relevant to the conversation, though.
I personally buy more Japanese stuff than English even though it's harder/impossible for me to read for the sole reason that even with all the crazy import fees and all that, it's still so much cheaper than buying the same volumes in English. I try and get at least a volume or two of any series I actively follow once it's released in English, although I seriously can't afford to get everything. Going digital would probably help my wallet a lot, but that just wouldn't work for me for various other reasons. One major con to buying English releases, though: it makes it that much more apparent how ridiculously cheesy all the dialogue is when I don't have to work to translate it in my head.
