I definitely think it has something to do with devil fruits. Oda apparently said we would learn something more about whitebeard during the wano arc.

Oda:
"One Piece will finally enter Wano next year!!"

I think Vegapunk might be this legendary enemy the strawhats will unexpectedly face during the wano arc. 'something related to whitebeard' in my eyes will have something to do with devilfruits and how blackbeard is able to wield 2 devil fruits. I think it's time Oda reveils some of the shroud that hangs around devil fruits. With a new arc in facing Kaido(and possibly big mom) how would it be if Vegapunk is entered into that equation. After the whole Reverie arc is over i expect vegapunk to make his appearance quite soon.

My first guess was flying machines, but then I remembered Tashigi took the children from Punk Hazard to see Vegapunk.
So, I guess, Vegapunk just uncover the secret of gigantification and the WG suddenly gained a truly massive army.
