1. He didn't win by brute force. Loki was immobilized.
2. Wrong. Skullion defeated Gray with a spell that apparently could range even the city, he didn't use this kind of spell against Elfman and Mirajane. Maybe because there were some of his allies around the city, but if he didn't use his strong spell, how you can say that he fought more seriously than when fought Gray? Maybe Elfman and Mirajane were lucky that he couldn't use a spell like this in their fight.
