I'm actually really curious about this, because there's a non-zero percent chance that even if Yamato drops the Oden thing, he'll still continue to talk and act masculinely, and be referred to as such. I don't think the Oden thing will just be 'dropped' though, considering it seems like that's Yamato's signature Strawhat-quirk they all must have. But yeah if it's ever addressed directly that Yamato embraces being a woman? Absolutely, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't.
I think some of it could be geographic. I try not to pay much attention to it, but being a world-wide forum and with a big following in the Middle East it's not surprising to me that Yamato is confusing to some. I mean, all these American companies that are supposedly all in on pride month are crickets in that market. Some countries in Southeast Asia are pretty closed off to these ideals, too. It's been normalized here in the USA long enough (well, depending on where you are. I would imagine a good portion of the Bible Belt would be equally confused) that it's whatever. If anything Oda has been inconsistent on how Yamato is represented. Called a son, introduced as a daughter, nose-bleeds from the team perverts, etc..
I live in a place where it's pretty normal to identify as whatever you want, but I have family in areas of the USA that I, personally, wouldn't feel comfortable being non-binary. Lol.
It sucks because transness ain't west-specific, it's just that transfolk in those less-accepting regions are forced that much harder into hiding. Yeah, corporate wokeness is fucking infuriating and is about as sincere as corporate twitter with their meme posts. Oda being inconsistent about Yamato's gender RIGHT off the bat and not elaborating concretely is why I prefer to just call him non-binary because, well, that sure is what it looks like. Son of Kaidou, the Oni Princess, "is" Oden, feminine features. That's some enby energy.
Growing up adjacent to the bible belt... yeah it fucking sucks. I didn't come out to my parents until just the last few years since living far away.
A lot of fans are not from USA or Europe. Introducing such elements in a shonen mange is strange.
I really don't look forward to these kind of discussions each time Yamato shows up. Oda should decide and clearly declare where he is going with this so those who look at this as "goal" can be happy and other can just drop the series.
It's a really common misconception that transness or queerness in general is something inherently western.
