This is what some people don't realise... Emperors are not titles given by the WG.

It's the world that gives it to them. The world see how powerful and influential they are, and then regard them as Emperors. If a Pirate is strong and influential in a way that makes them comparably superior to the majority, they will call them Emperors.

Blackbeard was called one just after 2 years. The WG doesn't give that title.

There would have been people in the past who would have seen similar Pirates, since their power and influence, and called them Emperors or something similar.
Just because there's not a title for something doesn't mean that thing doesn't exist. A lot of this argument is out of ignorance.
Yes agreed that its not necessarily a title given by WG and can be from people themselves. In fact I think that's how the Yonko were introduced by Garp e.g. pirates that ruled as if they were emperors. What's not certain is when the vernacular of emperor entered the OP world e.g. maybe 100 years ago they called equivalently powerful and influential pirates "Monarchs." To me this is a distinction without much of a difference since they functionally operate the same way but not everyone here agrees with that point of view.

There are others here that are arguing that the exact term "Emperor" is newer and was not used to describe these powerful pirates in the past. They are not arguing that powerful pirates with influence did not exist, just that they were not literally being called "Emperor" even if they were called some other term that functionally meets the same definition.

Roger didn’t motivate Kaido or Shanks? Or the Warlords??
Roger was the PK, who found Raftel & One Piece.

All Pirates aspire to achieve same goal. Pirates Pirate for their own reason. But they are mostly all racing towards The One Piece. Roger’s legacy.

Rocks History was erased. We didnt Even know about him until mentioned by the Marines.

Nope, he didn't.

Do you remember Kaido was a pirate before Roger became Pirate King?

How is he motivated by Roger... when he was a Pirate before Roger became Pirate King? Think you have it backwards.

Shiki was a Pirate before Roger became Pirate King, he wasn't inspired. Not all Pirates are inspired by Roger.

How about Bellamy? He didn't even believe One Piece existed?

Remember Kid saying people laughed at him for saying he'll find One Piece? People begun to think Roger was lying like Bellamy did.

Roger didn't inspire many Pirates.

He inspired Pirates of this generation, not ALL Pirates.

Rocks History was erased. We didnt Even know about him until mentioned by the Marines
So if his history was erased and people don't know about him, so how are pirates aspiring to be like him when they don't know about him? Huge flaw in your logic.

End of the day, fact is the Pirate age begun 24 years ago after Roger died, Rocks had no involvement.

How was Jimbei motivated by Roger? He wasn't, he had no interest in One Piece. He only cared about peace on Fishman Island. He wasn't inspired.

Hancock is also not inspired by Roger from what we know, she only cares about her kingdom.

Mihawk doesn't care about Roger nor is he inspired.

Not all Pirates are inspired.

It's mostly this generation, Luffy, Kid, and a lot of fodder pirates, but not all pirates. I guarantee you're factually wrong.

Only Warlord we know that was inspired to become Pirate King was Moriah.

The other Emperors want to be Pirate King and the Shichibukai were present during Roger's execution. 🤷‍♂️

It's incredible how fruitless this discussion is. And it took over the entire thread... holy shit!

Good job Hannibal...
A topic about Emperors in an Emperor thread is fruitless? Great reasoning bud.

Now you're involved in the conversation you said was pointless? Pretty hypocritical.

Being present at an Execution also doesn't mean you're inspired, just means you were there to attend it.

Smoker was at the execution, doesn't mean he was inspired.

Shiki was already seeking to find Ancient Weapons before Roger became Pirate King, he didn't inspire everyone.

There were Pirates before Roger dude.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Emperors were Pirates long before Roger became Pirate King.

Big Mom had a Poneglyph that Roger stole. Roger had to steal it to become Pirate King.

Don't think BIg Mom was inspired by Roger.

Shiki was well aware of Ancient Weapons before Roger became Pirate King. Big Mom had a Poneglyph before Roger became Pirate King. Rocks was already interested in Poneglyph before Roger became Pirate King.

Whitebeard had no interest in One Piece, he just wanted a family and to be an Emperor that ruled the sea.

Roger didn't inspire everyone and some Pirates were already interested in Poneglyph similar to Roger.

All Roger did was get more people to be interested in the New World which wasn't the case before. Soon, we're going to start saying he started Piracy at this rate.

I said All which was my mistake. Regardless he started the Pirate Era.

Lol at your semantics.
You mean to tell me “Michael Jordan” didn’t motivate or inspire other current professional basketball players?? Or “Tom Brady” wasn’t motivating and inspiring to other Football players???!!

You totally took my Rocks mention out of context. But ok, I cease to continue repeating my points.

That The Great Pirates of the Past more than likely we’re not referred to as Emperor. They weren’t mentioned as such, The current Yonkou made themselves into Yonkou.

Doesn't matter if they were referred to as such.

Doesn't mean they weren't Emperors, lol.

An Emperor defines someone who has influence and power.

Whether you call someone with influence and power an Emperor is irrelevant since they're doing what an Emperor does anyway.

It's like saying police didn't exist in the past. They may not have been called police in the past, but they:
  1. Looked for criminals
  2. Caught criminals
  3. protected the innocent.
Doesn't mean they weren't police just because they weren't called as such.

The irony of saying semantics, lol.

I didn't even say the word existed, I say Emperors existed, lol. Huge difference bud.

Terrible comparison.

Roger factually didn't inspire everyone, lol.

You said all Pirates, you're clearly not well informed because we know people who disregard Roger like Bellamy and we know many people didn't even believe One Piece existed during Marineford war which is why when Whitebeard said it existed, they got excited as it confirms it does exist and its worth becoming a Pirate.

There were pirates while Roger was a Pirate, fact is he didn't inspire everyone like you said.

He didn't inspire all Emperors or Shichibukai, that's absolutely false information.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

The current Yonkou made themselves into Yonkou.
There just happened to be 4 influential pirates on the sea, and they were called Yon (4) Ko. Simply means 4 Emperors.

It's like saying Supernova didn't exist, well, Supernova just means 11 Super Rookies.

Doesn't mean there weren't Super Rookies years ago.

A Super Rookie is simply an up and coming Pirate that has acquired a 100m bounty before reaching Sabaody. This reasoning being spilled here is like saying no Rookie Pirates acquired a 100m Beri bounty in the past until recently. That wouldn't make any sense at all.

I listed those as immediate examples that came to mind but we know for a fact war is happening in a lot of other islands. During the Dressrosa arc we learned Joker was supplying weapons to war zones all over the place so there are plenty of other islands and perhaps even large countries that are actively in war at the moment.
So there's a good chance it is actually a large scale problem, just not mentioned as much for now.

Yes I agree they want to wipe out pirates. I think they have the power to take out individual pirate groups (would be difficult and cost a lot) like a Yonko but that wouldn't end piracy. They think having Pluton would help (I have my doubts) in making this happen and other military strategies like what Akainu is doing. As for the Revolutionaries, I do agree they are seen as a threat but just not as much as Yonko. Perhaps their military strength is not high enough or its really about the RIo Poneglyph. Without them Revolutionaries going after red poneglyph and trying to get to Raftel they aren't as much a threat.
It wouldn't, but they'd have the power to end any pirates that pop up, and that matters to them as well. An ancient weapon or two would take out all the current pirates that are immensely strong, and from there they can keep a better check on piracy, from what I've concluded. I think the Revolutionaries are seen as a major threat though, if not Dragon. Isn't he labelled as the world's most dangerous/wanted man? I think they're a considerable threat.

Don't get me wrong, the Yonko are definitely a military threat to the WG. They are very powerful and all working together they would do a great deal of damage to the WG. However, if they went to a full war with the WG (not something as small scale as Marineford which is honestly just a battle) the Yonko would lose. The WG has so much more power at its disposal:
  • They have several high tier fighters (admirals/fleet admirals) and apparently the ability to draft more of people at that level relatively easily
  • Lots of middle strength fighters with dozens of VC that can fight execs and commanders of yonko crews
  • There is the entirety of ciphor pol with CP0 seeming to have pretty powerful fighters
  • Vast quantities of foot soldiers that far exceed the raw numbers yonko have
  • Massive fleets spanning the world (far more many ships than yonko have)
  • They have alliance of 100+ countries that have their own militaries that they can call on if it is an existential threat
  • Insane amount of foot soldiers in just the marines (the 100k they gathered in marineford is a faction of their full organization)
  • Etc etc
If you think about it, 4 Emperors together rule a single half of the GL. The WG literally rules majority of the world. A full scale war with WG that is just head on battle is likely to fail based on those (in my view), but I admit this is my own point of view not something that is explicit manga canon.

Where was it hinted that they'd lose to the World Government? If this was true, then the World Government would have taken out the emperors and pirates long time ago, not wait this long, and nor would they have had employed shichibukai. Big Mom, probably Kaidou, and the World Government have been biding their time waiting to get stronger before taking on enemies: Big Mom kept trying to make alliances to bolster her fighting force, from trying to get her daughter/s married to a giant to getting control of the Germa; Kaidou was using artificial devil fruit to turn his soldiers into zoan users; and Marines have been trying to get ancient weapons.

Everything points to WG, Big Mom, and Kaidou not having the strength to wipe out their enemies and trying to get stronger in order to do so. Whereas, we have Shanks and Whitebeard pirating for the fun of it and for family, and not necessarily to be the most dominant force, with Whitebeard possibly having the power to take out the WG if he wanted.

There are others here that are arguing that the exact term "Emperor" is newer and was not used to describe these powerful pirates in the past. They are not arguing that powerful pirates with influence did not exist, just that they were not literally being called "Emperor" even if they were called some other term that functionally meets the same definition.
Exactly. Though, we don't know how many powerful pirates with influence existed, since Whitebeard, BIg Mom, and Kaidou were mainly mentioned to hype up Xebec's power, as he was able to have three powerful pirates under him. They weren't mentioned to have influence, were they? Just possibly Xebec.

We were told Shiki, Roger and Whitebeard ruled, so they were the most influential.

In fact, the fact Oda said Kaido and Shanks were the newest Emperors implies there were Emperors already before Kaido and Whitebeard became Emperors, lol.

Shanks only became an Emperor 6 years ago meaning there were initially 3. Kaido must have been an Emperor before Shanks, so there were only 2 at a time, 4 was a recent thing.

Before Kaido was an Emperor, it'd have been Whitebeard and Big Mom since Kaido and Shanks were the new generation of Emperors who joined late.

It's really not that difficult to understand.

Before or after the Rocks pirates went down? Still doesn't mean the concept of emperor existed or that they were as influential as the original and current yonkou are.

When did Kaidou become an emperor? I googled it, and it says he and Shanks rose to power within 12 years after Roger's execution, so this does not counter my point, nor does it prove your point. For all we know, Big Mom and Whitebeard became an emperor two years before Roger died or in the same year he died or a year after he died. I'd love to see an actual proof of when, not conjectures.

Yeah, maybe not for someone who likes to make assumptions and conclusions without solid proof and won't back it up other than "common sense." Otherwise with your logic, we might as well say Whitebeard and even Xebec were Pirate Kings before and after Roger because they were at some point the most influential and the strongest pirates out of all the pirates.

Also, none of what you said even implies that the idea or title of emperor existed during the Rocks era. Being influential does not mean emperor, otherwise being the most influential means Pirate King if we're to go with that logic.

You talk about influence. The Current Emperors influence the world because they are a threat and have established connections.

Aside from being a threat Oars & The Giants Crew. We don’t know what their level of influence on the world was. So what influence are you exactly referring to??

You just strengthen the opposing argument. Who were the strong influential Pirates that Big Mom & WhiteBeard replaced!!!

Rocks & his crew had the biggest baddest Pirates around PERIOD….We wouldn’t know if the story didn’t come out and tell us. His crew consisted of anyone noteworthy as the story would show.

So what happened to these big bad Emperors that existed??

We have Impel Down where the fiercest Pirates joined up with BB…We’re any of them past emperors…No.

I know you can’t respond, but I’ll wait. And for anyone else that shares your thoughts

Another thing to consider is that there might not have been a pirate that was influential enough until Rocks, and maybe even then Xebec wasn't as influential as he was dangerous and destructive, so he couldn't have been an emperor. It's still way too open to really consider any definite possibility, especially when the original emperors minus SHanks were mentioned along with Xebec only to show how strong he was.

@Bold... Actually it's Shiki, Roger WB AND Big Mom. Those 3 with their standard piracy and BM through her empire building.

Sorry, it's may be repost topic..
But after read wano arc and know of kaido past i'm curious about this :

When Shanks intercep Kaido force near before marineford war, what exactly the purpose kaido to marineford, eliminate WB or helping WB ?

If he will helping WB why Shanks intercep kaido fleet..
Or may be shanks have hidden agreement with WG to prevent kaido force with certain compensation ?

🙏

It's never made 100% clear.

But from what we know of Kaido, he must have thought of Whitebeard as his #1 worth opponent, and didn't wanted him to throw his life away against the Marines.

Crocodile did suggest that Kaido wanted to fight Whitebeard, but given that Shanks got in his way, such a battle would have lasted too long for him to make it to Marineford. He had no choice but to turn back.

Another perspective, Kaido wanted a world war, and that's why he is building an army, or rather, was building an army.
Marineford was essentially a world war, and Kaido likely wanted to partake in it more so because the WG was involved, he hates Celestial Dragons and wants utter chaos and destruction.

I highly doubt Kaido was going there to help anyone, he was probably there to cause more chaos. It is potentially a mix of both ideas in my opinion, but his wish to fight Whitebeard seems to have more evidence given Crocodile did allude to it to begin with.

Actually wrong, if you read it carefully, the dynamics changed after Roger died.

It was initially Roger, Whitebeard and Shiki.

Big Mom became more prominent after the passing of Roger. Big Mom always had an Empire/Nation, but she wasn't on par with those 3 until Roger and Shiki were out of the picture.

More so, if you read Chapter 0, Shiki literally said since he and Roger were out of the picture, Whitebeard was the only one could be Pirate King. No mention of Big Mom.

Big Mom and Kaido only became recognised with Whitebeard after Roger and Shiki, so it was never Shiki, Roger, Whitebeard and Big Mom.

Does anyone have theories of how Shanks became an Emperor to begin with?. :-_-
