Would a made up sport be better adapted to be a manga?

Parkour.... hmm... *thinks* ...
You could try this one but it's an OEL, not a Japanese Manga:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Runners

Other than that... hm. Maybe. There are dozens of magazines in Japan which ain't limited to the four main demographics and while we have better access to them nowadays, we still only get a tiny bit of the full program. Kodansha alone publishes more than 20 magazines according to wiki plus all the other popular and alternative publishers. I find it funny that there are magazines specific for Pachinko and Mah-jongg only or as my Japanese teacher likes to say: there's no topic without a manga, including the TV's manual >.>

Would a made up sport be better adapted to be a manga?
Like Air Gear? Can work, can fail. Depends on the author.

A made up sport could be possible, though the author would have to be very careful to make something that could realistically work in their setting and that would have enough variety to stay interesting without breaking their own rules. (unless you're writing like, Calvinball the Manga)

"Who the fuck cares about that obscure sport" kind of defeats the purpose of "I'd like to see a manga about an obscure sport" doesn't it.

Though at risk of being slightly contradictory, I'd probably want another baseball one of the most. Most of the sports manga that I've actually enjoyed were about it.
Swish, count it!

i can't think how many series i've actually read about baseball....

ROOKIES
MR. FULLSWING

both were in capitals, unique, and classic in every single way! Scary

Okay, I'd like to see a manga about an obscure sport that doesn't suck. I think a Dodgeball manga could be interesting if implemented correctly.

Major and One Outs were the main ones that came to my mind. Though Rookies is definitely on my to read list.

What I really want to see is a manga about surfing. That'd be cool!

Why not making a manga about petanque/jeu de boules -> it's a cool sports (do you call it) to watch and to play. Curling would be cool too :p

Don't scream too loud, I know a few about surfing but you won't like the demographic :smile-big

@Koen
But there's a very popular one already. You can even buy merchandise :oh

surfing is very underrepresented, only bits i've seen of it is like a coupla pages in buso renkin and volleyball tsukai gouda go

and is petanque bowls? cause theres enough there for a kinda weird series, adding in over the top curve rolls and stuff, or smashingthrough other bowls with strength...

I really like the One Outs anime for some reason I don't understand myself. Must be the opening >.>

Anyways, this is no 'sports manga' thread - so please, let's go back to WSJ related discussions :amuse

I am surprised no one mentioned Mr. Fullswing. That's the only baseball manga I really am interested in reading. XD

I actually don't mind Inumaru being in the magazine as much as I did Penguin. At least Inumaru has a memorable lead (even though his premise is so immature). I am just glad Psyren and Sket are safe. I really hope Sket gets an anime so I have an excuse to watch it since I never caught up with sket (past chapter three...)

No, it has not. Neither has Psyren or Mago. Also, Inumaru Dashi has still not had a cover at all including the first chapter. It got taken by Bakuman since its first chapter happened to be in the split 37/38 issue last year which was a group cover.

Maybe someone (who has too much free time >.>) would like to dig through our threads and list all cover and cp series in correct order? The question whether a series got a cover and how often seems to appear on every 2-3th page in this thread.

I don't have free time but whomever does would be better off at the live journal page. Should have every TOC going back through '06 and will be easier to browse. And no, I don't believe Sket Dance has gotten a second cover, nor Psyren.

which is funny, cause sket, psyren AND mago could really do with the promotion.

and an inumaru dash cover would be well coloured andcatch peoples eyes...

Welcome back to the top tier, Bleach. :p

Interesting otherwise that we get a good week on Inumaru (higher than Bakuman?) and KochiKame above a good chunk of the magazine. And Meister...nice knowing you.
