Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Bakuman might definitely make a good drama. Drama watchers are a very different audience from anime viewers, though - I'm not convinced Sket would really be able to make it in that audience (whereas Bakuman seems to have a much greater appeal, period. They'd probably change the ages and stuff, though).

Bleach, end because the anime got too far ahead? If that happens, I will laugh my head off... and be pleased. But if they can't stick filler in, I guess it's plausible. Any reports of series continuing after a season or two of taking a break?

(And if we're throwing out examples - D.Gray-Man ended for what I always suspected was that reason. Could've been unpopularity, but the manga was maybe fifteen chapters ahead of the anime at that time, and with the rate at which new chapters were being put out...)

If there *absolutely has* to be a new Jump anime later in the year, I could definitely see animators doing Muhyo or Mx0, as mentioned by some smart person who I would name if I wasn't too lazy to look back for it. Mx0 has enough material for a season (+ potential fillers?), I'd bet, and it would probably translate to the format well. If they needed an anime. (Maybe they do, for the money? An anime would probably bring it in for Shueisha. What if they had a quota to meet?)

Quite a couple, so it is possible for Bleach to take some time off, but they don't want to make such a move. Simply having the characters onscreen is good enough for Studio Pierrot.

I can't see Mx0 or Muhyo getting anime so long after ending. Five series could potentially be adapted over 2009/2010, I can't see Shueisha pushing two moderately popular, canceled series.

Give it up, Ataru; Bleach is not going anywhere.
Manga might not be but the anime...well it is only so many fillers before they pull a Rurouni Kenshin and just kill it since the pacing sucks horribly in the manga.

no material as in the anime isn't really that far behind the manga, and when 2 months of manga can translate to one episode that doesn't bode well
We can blame the waste of entire panels on things like this for that.

naruto's chapter content and bleach's are two very different kettles of fish
Naruto being a bass while Bleach is a guppy or an anchovy.

Muhyo was cancelled? After making it to 18 volumes? Are you sure?

It all depends on the directors and the studios. Busou Renkin was more than a year after it ended. Non-WSJ manga, such as Jyuuousei, had as much as 3 years.

Also, I don't think the publisher of the manga has much to do with the process, just like Scholastic didn't have much to do with Harry Potter adapting into movies.

It ended in last place, without a CP for more than half a year.

I think we'll just get filler arcs as soon as there's no material left. TV ratings seem to be strong during times of filler previously, so I can see the studio running with their current model until it fails them. Although any thing is possible...

TV Tokyo may feel the need to hold onto it until they have some thing of equal value for time slot reasons. If any big shonen manga suddenly get announced for an adaption any time soon, then there may be hope. I'd rather see bleach end soon rather than die a painful death. Although I fear the later is what's in store.

True on all counts. Hatsukoi's anime debuted almost a year after the manga ended. But Muhyo and Mx0 seem so....... inconsequential, not the type of Jump series a studio would look at after the fact. Not with all of the other material available; manga from other anthologies, visual novels, light novels, video games, etc. Buso and Hatsukoi benefited from being by known mangaka; Watsuki and Kawashita's names carry far more weight then Kano and Nishi. Then again it may just be my personal bias, I thought both were meh manga. Liar Game getting a second season and a movie is far more exciting then any potential WSJ adaptions IMO. Wrong Jump, but still.

I don't think it is a stretch to say that Busou Renkin and Hatsukoi Limited getting their anime had a lot to do with the mangaka behind them. Now I enjoyed both a lot for what they were and what they did. But I think its painfully clear that if a lesser known mangaka had done them they probably wouldn't have made it to the anime stage.

I would still enjoy an Mx0 anime though but I think that is too far gone now.

Yeah that's probably the best way of describing it. Except i like anchovies most of the time XD

anyway on this whole Mx0 Muhyo talk, it helps to remember that both Nishi and Kano have very unique art styles that don't lend themselves well to adaptation. both would be good for drama cds (did either get any) but anime? no

There's a couple studios I can think of that've successfully done difficult/unusual manga adaptations before and could probably handle Muhyo well.

But otherwise, probably wouldn't work out.

Nishi? Yes... But Kanou? I would think Kanou is pretty mainstream in terms of both plot as well as drawing style.

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

Mx0 not animateable? I think either Shaft or KyoAni would do well with the series...

I'd really love to see a Mx0 anime. Shaft with their Negima-adaption might already be in the right genre to take a look at Mx0. =3 Somehow, while KyoAni's art style fits, I just can't see them doing it. (And if KyoAni would have the time to do Mx0 I'd rather have them produce more Haruhi. >.>)

As for the bleach anime ending: Not happening. They get good ratings with filler arcs, so they will jump on the option to make more fillers -- the place in the story doesn't interest them either. They'll just pull another "gotta wait" moment like they did with the previous one.

Then something in Bleach's defense: Most panels are not wasted. They usually fit well into the chapter. Just because it doesn't have tons of explanations of what happens and relies on art instead doesn't mean the panels are wasted. I agree that his pacing is slow, made for '1 volume at a time' reading, but I disagree on the panels being wasted.

Anyway, looking forward to Medaka Box -- Doesn't matter that her bust is a bit too large for my tastes...

with kano i'm talking more about it's intent to have proportions and expressions change the character greatly panel to panel, something that probably doesn't lend itself well to animation, where characters tend to stay looking a certain way for the duration.

and with bleach you have to be aware it needs an opportunity for fillers to happen. something that at this point in time hardly seems feasible. it's gonna cross the threshold before then and fuck shit up

Pretty sure TV Tokyo just want ratings. Just look at Pokemon. Can see Bleach going on until kubo finishes his last chapter.

Facial expression wise, I don't think that's going to be much of a problem. I mean ToLoveRu and Neuro animation is a pretty good example of how they would be able to overcome that (though it's also one of the reason why I dislike TLR and Neuro's animation so much... LaLa and Yako are just dull in the anime compare to that of manga :p)

I agree with the fillers needing some sort of opening for them to happen. Forest of Menos had the time to do that, but I don't see any more chance for the script writers to get something in.

The biggest problem with Bleach's animation isn't Kubo's pace (it's a problem, yes, but not the biggest in my opinion), but rather the way the Bleach script writers portrait certain fights. I mean in Naruto, you have omitted/semi-omitted fights in the manga being extended greatly in the animation, sometimes taking half or even a full episode, which is able to prolong catching up with the manga (of course, the endless supply of openings for fillers helped greatly as well).

Re: Weekly Shounen Jump [2009] - Discussion & TOC Talk v.2

There was no "opening" for fillers within the last filler arc for Bleach either.

They just suddenly began a random arc that had nothing to connect to the story and waited for the manga to get some new material. Didn't bother them in the least that everybody was in the middle of HM arc when they pulled that stunt. They even mocked themselves for it in some post-preview skit. :p

Really, if they want to make decent fillers (and usually they're at least decent) they will do it at any point in time.

But I got to agree with finestela too. The staff working on Bleach animation certainly ain't great in writing fights and prolonging them. Usually the fights seem worse as soon as they leave the Kubo-drawn guidelines of the fights. =S

Yeah Neuro covers always look great. Now with the series done I'm hoping viz decide to pick it up. They definitely have the room for a new series or two, with Black Cat ending it's run and both Naruto and HxH right behind the Japanese releases now. Pretty sure a few other series were closing in on their last tank too. Fingers crossed!
