To be honest I have been wondering if FT was actually too weak to participate in the games with the strength they had before the timeskip. Granted a couple of them did benefit enough to actually be relevant fighters however it does not seem as if FT was actually weaker than any of the guilds from the future. I mean, gazille and natsu were overwhelmingly stronger than sting and rogue. But wasn't the level they showed during their first fight with them roughly the same natsu and gajeel had before the timeskip safe for dragon force?

Erza was able to defeat the 100 monsters without second origin apparently and seemed to be a match if not stronger than minerva and kagura even without second origin too.

Laxus defeated jura who was gildarts equal however even before the timeskip it was not difficult to imagine laxus at least holding his ground against gildarts.

Grey has always been just beneath standard natsu for the most part.

Jubia did get trolled IMO, even with second origin she seemed to have trouble with shelia even though she tied with wendy who could not even fight before second origin.

I get the impression at a large scale panicked over nothing. Even if they would have lost without second origin and 3 months worth of training it doesn't mean their standing would have been bad. Even then, I have a hard time imagining a team with laxus, erza, mira, natsu and gajeel losing here.

I would agree with most of that, but Mashima may have done so that he could skip a power-up arc/part before this next big event.

Well, most of the competition were either people who were way below them in terms of strength pre timeskip (Blue Pegasus) or people who were their age post timeskip (Sabertooth) So everyone would either have been like... say... Max, and been weaker before spending those seven years getting to about the core cast's previous level, or they would have been like Sting and Rogue, and been kids who grew up and reached about that level (or slightly higher) over the course of the timeskip. Jura's the only outlier I can think of to that, and he lost to plot armor more than anything else.

Basically, I think they still could have placed without it. I don't think 3 months of training, no matter how intense, or an extra supply of magic energy but no increase to technique are really enough to make up for a whole seven years. But they might not have won. They did need Lucy to be able to spam summoning.

Finally getting around to responding to this:

Stop and consider how things would have gone had no one from Fairy Tail improved before the games. Lucy's spirits improve with her, and Flare was easily able to handle her spirits 1v1 other than Cancer. Remove Lucy's ability to dual summon spirits, and weaken them, and Flare stomps Lucy. Elfman would be unable to defeat Bacchus. Cana would not have been able to use Fairy Glitter to the level she did, leaving her scoring lower. Laxus would have been much harder pressed to deal with Raven Tail, if he could defeat them at all. Wendy would have lost to Chelia. Lucy likely would have been thrown out of the water by Juvia, who would have then lost to Minerva. Natsu and Gajeel would have lost to dragon force Sting and Rogue, possibly even just to Drive Sting and Rogue. On the last day, Gray would have had a much more difficult time defeating Rufus, leaving him in no shape to face Leon, so Juvia and Gray would have lost to Chelia and Leon. Laxus would have a harder time against Orga, which would be fairly irrelevant as they'd both get defeated by Jura. Gajeel would likely again lose to Rogue, without Rogue even being possessed, unless Gajeel managed to eat Rogue's shadow at that time and gain enough of a surprise advantage to win. Erza would still beat Kagura just the same, but would be stuck facing a fresh Minerva with limited mobility, and no quick way to end the fight quickly with overwhelming power. She'd still have good odds of winning, but she'd be in no shape to take on Jura, Leon, Chelia, Sting, and possibly Rogue.

The bottom line is that even with their power increase just prior to the tournament. Fairy Tail had a lot of close matches, and matches that hinged a lot more on their power increase than some people care to admit. Without it, they could probably still manage 3rd or 4th place, but they'd take a lot more damage on their way there.

Well, I did point out at the end that I was talking about a team made out of laxus, erza, mira, natsu and gajeel which would basically be the strongest possible team so far. Even then, with their new power boosts it did seem like they just went in for the overkill.

Erza defeated kagura without second origin. In all likelihood she would have been stronger than minerva without it had it not been for the wounds she had already taken.

Laxus had a remarkably easy victory over RT. Who is to say pre time skip laxus wouldn't have been able to do the same? He was already a monster superior to erza and was the one most capable of putting up a fight against hades. Heck, it was the magic power he gave natsu (along with the combination of elements) that gave natsu the boost to actually harm him.

It really does not seem like rogue and sting were that much different from pre time skip natsu and gajeel (which makes sense because they are the same age). DF would have been an issue as that basically kicks their power up a notch but their basic strengths were not that different.

Mira did not get second origin but she is supposed to be about as strong as erza meaning that she should hold her ground pretty well in the tournament.

Lucy, wendy would definitely not have worked in the tournament regularly but FT had a luxury which no other team in the tournament had. FT actually was able to have 2 perfectly competitive teams in the tournament, the rest of the guilds had 1 or barely one. Seriously, the only difference between the boost and not having it as far as FT was concerned would have been that instead of 2 competitive teams they would have had only 1.

Now, how much trolling would FT have been subjected to in the same circumstances if FT goes to the tournament with only 1 team concentrating all their strong members? For starters grey would not have been there.... Natsu, gajeel and laxus would have been ideal for the first game considering their sense of smell (unless magic replicated). Laxus is a decent bit smarter and more powerful than either of them for that matter. They don't even have to win, they just have to do better than what they did with grey in the end. At least mira, erza and laxus should have been able to do better IMO.

Which one in FT would not give flare the fodder treatment? She wasn't even a proper match for current lucy IMO, what would she do against natsu's fire, gajeel's swords, laxus's speed, erza or mira? Easy victory overall.

The fight with jura would have probably been lost in basically any scenario though.

The chariot event is trouble for all DS so this would have been bad for anyone... mirajane or erza in turn would be ideal for this with their armors and transformations though. Just some common sense from the name and they would have avoided this. It is worth noting that gajeel got trolled here as he just happened to develop movement sickness during the game.

Bachus would have been a tough opponent and who gets chosen would be random however I would argue that FT wins 3 out of 5 times which is not bad. Jenny would be worthless against just about anyone. Pandemonium is an even in which they all should be able to do respectably well. erza participated in the tournament without using second origin for the most part. I don't see how FT could not do well here.

I think laxus vs alexie is a battle which he would have won even before the timeskip. I don't think any of the others would really hold up a candle to him considering how easily he won.

Shelia would be a relatively easy opponent for the rest of the gang IMO.

FT did do pretty well during the naval battle thing and they only sent lucy.... Send in their top 3 fighters and they would have been in just about as good a position if not better though.

Natsu and gajeel would have probably lost against DF, I will give you that.

The last event would be average in the end IMO. Jura would have made the difference here. Still, we are talking about laxus, erza, mira, natsu and gajeel so they should have no problem getting points. Current grey actually took out the trimen on his own, how much of a threat can they be? The quatro cerberus guys were not tough except for bachus....

Even assuming they do not send the strongest possible team there is no particular reason for them to not get at least average results IMO. Now, none of that actually even considers gildarts as part of the strength of the guild for that matter. Jura is at most as strong as gildarts.... In a completely ideal scenario the best plausible team FT could come up with before the timeskip would be gildarts, laxus, erza, mira and natsu. How can that team loose? Heck, even without them you have a bunch of powerful mages while on the other hand anyone outside of the top 5 in sabertooth was basically worthless.

Yeah, a team made out of Laxus, Erza, Mira, Natsu and Gajeel which would basically be the strongest possible team they could make without Gildarts. But now you're getting into completely alternate scenarios which changes things a lot more.

The problem with Hidden is that it was a game of detection and precision. Gray and Juvia did poorly in part because they had the worse means of detection. With Gray having the additional problems of being focused on by Raven Tail, and counter attacks being rendered impossible by the rules of the game.

Any member of Fairy Tail would face the same issues as Gray did. Erza is precise, but she has limited means of detection. Natsu and Gajeel have a better potential means of detection, but tend to lack precision. Mirajane has no notable precision, detection or notable lack of either. Laxus can likely be precise and potential for the same detection as Natsu and Gajeel. Really it would probably come down to "Can they handle Narpudding better than Gray did?" which is by no means guaranteed.

Yeah any of them could defeat Flare assuming that Obra didn't intervene in time. But with one team they aren't guaranteed to fight Flare, and could face Jura instead, which is pretty much a guaranteed loss.

Yes, Chariot would have been much easier to handle by someone other than a DS. But that holds true regardless of any scenario. The whole reason Natsu was there in the first place was that he insisted on going despite the name. Lack of power up wouldn't change Natsu's insistence on going. Him participating the first day might, but that would also likely result in Gajeel insisting on going to compete with Natsu.

Yes, they'd get through Bacchus or Jenny fairly easily, and Pandemonium would pretty much remain the same. Like I said, while Laxus might be able to solo Raven Tail still, he'd have a much more difficult time of it. Though yeah, any of them could defeat Chelia likely.

Naval Battle they'd be in bad shape for. Juvia and Lucy were their two best "in the water" people. They placed so highly because Juvia was able to through all the non-Fairy Tail members other than Minerva out at once, then after Minerva teleported her out, Lucy was able to endure being beaten, and Minerva got too caught up in her sadism to care about points. Erza with the Sea Emperor armor should still be able to do fairly well... but once it gets down to her and Minerva, Minerva will likely quickly realize that Erza isn't easy prey and just teleport Erza out during the period where it would mean zero points.

And of course they'd lose the tag battle. So, after day four their score would look something like:

Hidden: 0-10 points
Battle: 0 or 10 points
Chariot: 0-1 points
Battle: 10 points
Pandemonium: 10 points
Battle: 10 points
Naval Battle: 0 points
Tag Battle: 0 points

So between 30 and 51 points. I highly doubt the others will do much better on Hidden. It's just a bad game for Fairy Tail who is much more used to tanking and throwing out indiscriminate attacks. Even if they get as high as 5th place, they only match their original end of day 4 score of 45 points. If they some how excel at that, but land Jura instead of Flare, they end up with 41 points. If they do as badly as Gray, and get Jura, they'd be at 31 points, just above Blue Pegasus.

As for the last day, Gray didn't solo the Trimens. Gajeel defeated two of them, then Gray defeated Hibiki (who is the weakest in terms of combat) as he fled Gajeel. Yes Erza is superior to either Minerva or Kagura. They problem is that she'd still have to take on both, and the injuries sustained when defeating one would make it difficult to impossible to defeat the other. Mirajane could possibly take one of them instead as she wouldn't get tied up with Chelia like Juvia did. However this would be the Mirajane that was reluctated to use her base Satan Soul twice in a few hours due to lacking the magic to fuel it. Chelia is about even with powered up Juvia. Mirajane would still likely defeat her, but stand a good chance of being rendered easy pickings for someone like Kagura or Minerva. Defeating Rufus would depend on who fought him. Powered up Gray defeated him with moderate difficulty, so he'd probably be a pretty even match for underpowered up Natsu and Gajeel. The others would have an easier time.

Likewise Leon would be above Natsu and Gajeel. Natsu and Gajeel would also still be weaker than Sting and Rogue, though it'd be up for debate if DF would give them enough of a boost to take Laxus, Erza, or Mirajane. {owered up Laxus was apparently stalemated with Orga thanks to the magic type advantage Orga had (much the same way Hoteye stalemated Jura). Weaken Laxus and Orga will be much more likely to win. Even if Laxus wins, he won't be in shape to fight anyone else, much less Jura.

Yeah if we swap Gildarts in for Natsu or Gajeel it would give them someone that countered Jura with probably the same results as the current Laxus vs Jura.

In fact, let's go with your line up of Gildarts, Laxus, Erza, Mira and Natsu. Not too much changes before the last day. Gildarts would be a horrible choice for Hidden. Probably demolish a building destroying scores of clones with his first attack. He would give them someone who could draw or win against Jura improving their odds of getting points there. Nothing else changes until day 4 when we'd probably get Laxus and Natsu vs Rogue and Sting to keep a four DS battle. That would raise their odds of winning, or at least getting a draw, but personally I would not bet on Laxus and Natsu pre-power up vs DF Rogue and Sting. It certainly would be unlikely to be a 2v1 stomp in Fairy Tail's favor. All told not much changes other than improving their odds of staying even with their old score a little.

Which brings us to the last day. Assume Gildarts swats Rufus to start with. That still leaves us with likely scenarios where Gildarts defeats Jura but is in no shape to deal with others after. Laxus either loses to Orga, or defeats him but is in no shape to defeat anyone else of consequence. Erza deals with Minerva (Kagura not seeking Erza out due to Jellal probably not being revealed) but is left in no shape to deal with Kagura. Mirajane defeats Chelia, but is not in shape to take on anyone of consequence. Natsu loses to Leon, Sting, or Rogue.

The bottom line is that while it's still possible for them to do well without a power increase, the number of scenarios in which they get wiped out rise. They can probably manage 4th or 5th place easily enough, but first would be a long shot, especially as Lamia Scale and Sabertooth's points would increase from the lack of a two Fairy Tail teams, and a likely change in the results of the tag battle. That's a far cry from Fairy Tail winning undefeated, and more a testament to the strength of Fairy Tail's four S-Class wizards, three of which it was already stated or shown would still be competitive post skip.

I think the best person for that game would be like u said Natsu / Gajeel for their ability to smell, but I think ppl like Erza/Laxus can get it done by sensing other ppl magic.

Mira on the other hand....got something others don't. If she saw for example Rufu she can easily transform into Rufu getting close from him...and 1 hit.

And for last. Naval battle best person from Fairy Tail to be picked is actually...Laxus...you know...thunder...water...don't mix them together ....So you don't say I'm saying this because of my pic or avatar....how about...

best person for Naval battle is ...Gray...Freez them....game over.

Well, gajeel would be among the stronger mages FT had available at the time the tournament started. Well, at least I would rate gajeel higher than grey or freid... they technically had gerard too although he was not really a member of the guild so I did not consider him. Things are even grimmer if we do consider him since he did seem to be at worst equal to jura if not actually stronger though. Who do you think would make the strongest possible FT team among the members they had at the time?

I may understand why would you rank Gajeel over Gray, but Freed ? You can't be serious ? The guy will lay a one-sided systematic beat down on Gajeel. I really can't comprehend why you would even put him in Freed's level let alone above him. Freed was presented to us as someone vastly superior to the ordinary Fairy Tail Mages but slightly below the S-class Mages.

Freed isn't a powerhouse. His Yami no Ecriture is no different from what Elfman or Levy does, depending on how he applies it. What makes him special is that he can enforce new rules of magic or physics in a confined space, but he needs time to prepare them. It's no good in a tournament setup, where he doesn't know when and with whom he would be fighting until it's time to battle. In a match where he sees his opponent coming he's a force to be reckoned with, but in a spontaneous fight he's not exactly soaring high above the rest of the guild.

That's not what his Yami no Ecriture all about. With it he was able to fight on par with Mira for a certain amount of time, as well as easily outclass Rustyrose. Both feats are something that Gajeel would never even hope to come close to (seeing his pathetic feats.) Setting runes\rules is but a bonus. His feats so far easily make him "soaring high above the rest of the guild." Even Bickslow is most likely stronger than Gajeel.

Freed got completely dominated by Mira. I hardly call fight "slightly below". It's not even comedic fight like Natsu vs Erza.

Still put up a decent fight. Much more decent than Natsu and Gajeel could've ever done.

I would say Erza not even having a chance against Minerva ...since she only could defeat her with a 2nd origin.
I'm actually kind of on the fence about it. On the one hand, Erza wasn't close to out of magic, and without Second Origin, Minerva seems to be on her level, or slightly lower. On the other hand, Erza was wounded in a way that restricted her mobility, and gave her a weak point for Minerva to target. So without Second Origin, uninjured she could definitely defeat Minerva, injured she might still be able to, but it wouldn't be a certain bet.

Gray clearly stated that other than ppl who already got monster power like Laxus himself+Natsu+Wendy need a power boost. No, Laxus definitely trained, just like the rest. What you're forgetting is that most characters, including Laxus already have a complete skillset. Training for them is just increasing power, much the same way characters in DBZ would spend time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber just training to increase their power.

And for last. Naval battle best person from Fairy Tail to be picked is actually...Laxus...you know...thunder...water...don't mix them together ....So you don't say I'm saying this because of my pic or avatar....how about...
While Laxus would be a decent choice for it (assuming it's not purified water, which doesn't conduct well), they have to pick the participant based only on the name of the game. Picking Laxus for a game that might be conducted on something that floats would be a bad idea.

Bixlow is weaker than Lucy and Gray.

He only won against Gray because Gray's magic was sealed by Fried's trap, and Lucy only had such a difficult time against him because he got her keys away from her before she could summon Loki. Gajeel is certainly stronger than him.

Fried's main power is his runes. His direct fighting with Yami no Ecriture is secondary. While he's done decent with the direct fighting, Gajeel is almost certainly still superior seeing as he's on a par with Natsu.

Still put up a decent fight. Much more decent than Natsu and Gajeel could've ever done.
Seeing as Mirajane was defeated by a sucker punch from Elfman who is below Natsu and Gajeel, I rather doubt Fried did better than they could have. They gave Laxus quite the run for his money and eventually defeated him. If they hadn't been so surprised that he was a DS that he could catch them flat footed with a lightning DS roar, they might not have even needed him to screw up with Fairy Law.
