He was a ghoul since the beginning but was trained in the military arts by humans, which gives him the strength from both sides.

It should mean that not only is he a ghoul and has that natural power, he also trained MA. Not that he was a human, he probably just learned some while blending in with humans ("as a man" >> as humans do; when pretending to be human)
CCG investigators are mere humans but through training they're able to defeat ghouls, if all ghouls trained like that they could be much stronger, like Matasaka.

Anyone kind enough to explain to me the different classes/ranks in CCG? Somehow I never paid much attention to it and just figured rank/class is the same, just different translation, but now it's starting to not make sense as I'm cleaning up my thoughts. Does it go like?...:
3rd rank < 2nd rank < 1st rank < 1st class < special class < ??

what about the associate special class or something?

If I'm not mistaken, you've got the order down.
The associate special class is just below special class, hence 'associate.'

Actually that's the confusing part. There are actually six ranks, the lower three ranks go from Rank 3 to 1, the upper three ranks include 1st Class, Assoc. Sp. Class, and Sp. Class.

If they use alphabetical hierarchy just like the one they use to determine ghouls' ratings, that would be more comprehensible to the readers. Not sure if it is translator/author's faults though.

Actually... there is another thing of a ranking system I noticed.
Recall the S1, S2, S3 squads mentioned in Re? The S3 squad that Urie is aiming for?
Guess what the numbers are.
S1=S, S2=SS, S3=SSS.
Anyone but me that have made this connection? These are teams created to counter specific rated ghouls.
It´s just a guess though...

I think the terms are pretty 'obvious,' at least for the Japanese readers. Rank 3 to 1 uses 'kyuu' as in 'grade' eg. martial arts grading pre-black belt has the same structure i.e. 1st kyuu is top in this group. (I think the standard military rankings are also the same in various armies. Eg. You have 3rd lieutenant < 2nd lieutenant < 1st lieutenant.)

'1st class' is actually translated from 'joutou' which literally means 'top class.' So obviously this is ranked higher than grades 3 to 1.

Then you have the special class, and associated sp class. 'Associated' (jyun) is a pretty standard term in various languages used to mean 'semi-'. Eg. Associated member, someone who has partial rights within a certain group.

Haha, coincidentally when I wrote that post, I also thought about the same thing. Maybe the author just want to show that the hatred toward ghouls in CCG is that high.

Not a spoiler, but one last image to go with them: this issue of YJ announced color pages in chapter 11, which comes out next week! (Or technically the week after, if you don’t count spoilers.) The blurb by the title also hints that Aogiri will be the chapter’s focus.

I’ve seen at least one person claiming this is a double issue (meaning the magazine will take a break the week after), but it doesn’t say that anywhere in the image, and nobody on 2chan is saying that either, so we’ll have to wait and see.
