I wouldn't be shocked if Shanks ran away because he couldn't waste time fighting someone who couldn't be killed.
Shanks running away from a fight? I doubt it. I wouldn't say Kaido couldn't be killed. That huge scar on his lower abdomen indicates he can be harmed if his opponent is strong enough or then again maybe he got that scar during one of his suicide attempts.

No that's wrong, it's not like Kaido was targetting Shanks to begin with
Although I don't think they fought at all, I think Shanks is fairly diplomatic, so he must have used his skills to somehow convince Kaido

That doesn't make sense. The reason why shanks confronted Kaido was because he needed to stop the latter from going after WB. If he went to Kaido only to run away, then he accomplished nothing and Kaido could have potentially arrived at marineford to bring utter chaos to an already desperate situation.

Why is it OK for WB to defeat Kaido, but not Shanks? Last chapter clearly states that Kaido was defeated by the Marines and by the EMPERORS. Yonko=Emperors, and it's plural so it wasn't one Yonko. If it was a one on one fight, it's possible that Shanks could get the upper hand, or just fight off Kaido. Kaido isn't invicible, just hard to kill. I can imagine Shanks saying: "hey let's do this one on one, without our crews. The winner gets to advance". That would explain why Shanks crew weren't hurt, and frankly if they are as strong as I think they are, then it would make sense they would be able to fight Kaido's crew and not be injured. Last chapter, we saw Sanji one shot Sheepshead, who is thought to be part of Kaido's crew. So it's not like they will all be incredibly strong. BB and the admirals were afraid of facing the red hair's crew...As long as a Yonko is alive and has his crew he wouldn't lose his status. The reason BB was able to take WB's territory was because he died, even though his crew survived. Maybe it won't be the same for Luffy vs Kaido, because Luffy doesn't kill his enemies, so my bet is that it will be a situation like Dressrosa, with possibly the Marines being there to arrest Kaido and his crew.
We have no context at all regarding the circumstances under which he was captured or defeated in the past though. Quite a few things come into play in this regard though the relevant ones would be what exactly was his position in the world when it happened. Do we know for a fact kaido had his current standing and position when he was captured in the past? None of the things in the list given in the chapter seem to be particularly recent, specially if we consider that the only reason shanks vs kaido wasn't a bigger deal before is that the great war itself was about to start.

All yonko have numerous crews and allies. In this context what matters would be whether sanji is fighting kaido's main crew and fighters. Seeing at how easily he won it does not seem like he fought an equivalent to a WB commander. In turn had he defeated one of kaido's crew who had such a standing then the results of that could easily be world shattering. Just look at what crocodile's defeat lead... it is what made the BB pirates target luffy. Which lead to their fight with ace. Which lead to the great war.

The fact is the manga mentioned the Yonko in plural, not just one Yonko(WB). And he apparently lost multiple times to them. Whether he was a Yonko back then or not is not a clear indication of him prevailing against Shanks. When it comes to a fight between Yonkos, the fact that they would fight with their crews would be risky, because they would sustain losses that they might not recover from easily, in terms of crew members. That's why you don't see the Yonko fighting all the time, because if they were to attack each other let's say on a daily basis, they would simply become weaker, and lose their territories. They all have a good idea of each other's strength, but more than simply being afraid for themselves, they are also afraid for their crews. So it would make a lot more sense if Shanks and Kaido met and fought, that they would try to solve this one on one, with their crews not interfering. If Kaido's goal was to get to WB then he would do anything to keep the casualties low, as for Shanks his goal was to stop the war.Even back then when Shanks tried to warn WB, we didn't see Marco and the others gang up on Shanks. Sure it was a skirmish, or maybe less than that, but you get my point. Kaido doesn't seem to be the cowardy type, on the contrary, he's suicidal, but not to the extent of losing his crew. And if we put ourselves in his perspective, he wouldn't be afraid of facing Shanks, because if he has set his eyes on WB, for the reasons we know, then there is a good chance he won't back down from fighting Shanks, because he doesn't give a fuck if he dies. That's exactly what he wants, what difference does it make if it's Shanks or WB?
Shanks could have used some reverse psychology by saying that both crews would fight and Kaido's will be so impaired that he won't be able to do whatever he was planning to do. But if we assume that back then Kaido's wish was to die, then it doesn't really matter if he still has his crew, unless he's a really nice guy or something.

It's clear they had a fight even if it was briefly, I'd post images but I'm sure it's already on page 1.

When Shanks arrived, the Marines said "didn't he just have a skirmish with kaido yesterday!?". Negotiations don't require energy and the confrontation clearly got physical or violent at the very least; no one expected Shanks to come to Marineford to negotiate (he's a pirate), so this seems to be referential to his battle stamina since no one comes to war to have a chat.

Law himself has pointed out Kaido isn't one to negotiate except maybe a business proposal was made like Shanks offering an Island (sign of weakness though), but doubt there was a negotiation personally.

Only 2 things could have transpired if excluding business negotiations and that's a fight or Kaido being intimidated by Shanks. As absurd as intimidation sounds, I find it very possible.

CoC as Rayleigh states intimidates opponents and weak spirited individuals into submission or into being unconscious.

Just to quote the important bits-
Rayleigh: This is the ability to intimidate the opponent (CoC); this power is measured by the user's spirit and nothing more. You must not use it until you can completely control it; otherwise, it'll intimidate innocent people around you as well.
There's nothing that implicates it only being effective against fodder and we saw both Joker and Luffy use it against each other.

In Z Movie; Luffy uses it and it knocks out all but 1 individual who barely retains his consciousness and was intimidated to the point of giving out disclosed information.

We've seen Luffy use it in Amazon Lily to intimidate the Gorgon sisters into obeying his commands.

If the effects of CoC were scaled from weakest to strongest level of tolerance:
  1. Intimidated into unconsciousness. (Evidence for this)
  2. Intimidated into obeying commands. (Evidence for this)
  3. Intimidated, but still willing to fight. (Evidence for this)
  4. I'd go one further and say it can result in self-doubt or cause on to avoid engagement. (No evidence)

We've still not seen someone use CoC for prolonged periods since Shanks boarded WB's ship; I'd imagine if weak willed people were to continuously step into radii of CoC, we'd witness people dropping like flies.

It's likely that Shanks defeated Kaido or he deterred Kaido with CoC, but defeating is the most likely option for now anyway as Ladylola has previously stated as the CoC is still mostly speculation; about time Oda give us more haki panels.

If Shanks couldn't intimidate Whitebeard, Marco, Jozu, and other high ranking crew members with his Haki then how in the world would he be able to intimidate Kaido? None of them broke a sweat. None of them fainted, but somehow Shanks is able to suddenly intimidate a pirate who's obviously stronger than all of them expect Whitebeard. It is absurd.

The manga has pointed out that Kaido has been defeated and captured numerous times by the Yonko and Marines. Kaido is clearly not invincible despite the fact he's hard to kill. However, Shanks showed up at Marineford in good health. No wounds or injuries. Wouldn't that suggest he didn't actually fight against Kaido? Shanks may be very well capable of defeating Kaido in a one on one fight, but to suggest he's able to do that without sustaining any injuries or sctraches whatsoever is ludicrous. A negotiation taking place is the only plausible explanation for what happened.

Also, I think it is worth noting that the word "skirmish" has multiple definitions such as a small battle or minor dispute or small conflict. Some of the definitions don't imply a physical altercation occurred. I think it is important to look at the circumstances around the incident to understand the proper context in which that word was being used.

There are various ways people react to intimidation, just because it's not expressed doesn't mean it's not having an effect. We don't know how it works over-time against formidable opponents.

Luffy and Joker made use of it. They both know the other isn't fodder so why did they use it? Rayleigh also never said it's useless against strong opponents.

Like Rayleigh said, CoC is based on the the difference between the user and opponent's spirit, not their physical strength.

Just because Shanks turns up looking unscathed doesn't mean anything didn't happen and a day had gone by; how do we know he didn't clean up? There's dialogue to condense as much information as possible so I'd rather rely on all provided information instead of excluding one just because it doesn't fit with my presuppositions.

Shanks and Whitebeard fought briefly, none of them seemed to get scarred from the confrontation, it doesn't mean they didn't have a brief skirmish and just talked. Kaido and Shank's confrontation could easily have been similar and most likely was based on dialogue at least.

It is not right to claim Shanks may have intimidated Kaido when there is no manga evidence to support the idea that Kaido has a weaker spirit than Shanks.

Also, you didn't read or comprehend my post fully. If they merely clashed swords once like Whitebeard & Shanks did and called it quits, then I have no problem accepting that possibility. However, you and other people keep suggesting Shanks actually defeated Kaido in a fight. A big difference. A prolonged battle would have occurred if that was the case. There is no possible way he wouldn't been harmed in the process of defeating Kaido. That's my point.

They may have fought for a few minutes then stopped and started negotiating instead or the other way around. It is possible they didn't fight at all and commenced negotiating right from the beginning. Either scenario is plausible.
However, it is not plausible that Shanks defeated Kaido in a one on one fight without sustaining injuries. We don't know anything about Kaido's power, but we know for a fact that he is not a weak person. His title as a Yonko alone is enough of an indication of his strength. Also, this is someome whom Doflamingo fears greatly so we can surmise he is very powerful.

Well, we don't Shanks and Whitebeard ended with just 1 clash of swords and back to Sake, things may have gotten more heated than we witnessed.

Shanks didn't want Kaido interfering with Whitebeard and Kaido wanted to interfere with Whitebeard.
  • Who got the desired outcome? Shanks.
  • Who didn't get to do as they pleased? Kaido.
  • Is is satisfactory to accept they just negotiated? Yes, but then it betrays and question everything we've learnt about Kaido to an extent imo anyway.
All we can do is speculate to find out the most likely scenario that favours Shanks based on the outcome; I personally can accept Kaido having been defeated or intimidated since things went Shank's way and both can explain the lack of battle-scars, but more so the from the perspective of intimidation.

CoC doesn't ask permission to intimidate, it just does; it's not something that can be protected against except the user chooses to make exceptions and it's apparently the most feared power in OP so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt in this case.

How can we be sure that Kaido doesn't have CoC? Was it specifically said that only humans have it, assuming he's not even human? I don't think CoC would work on him if he had it, or simply that he's not weak. We've seen how those who are too weak to resist CoC would just faint, back when Shanks used his CoC when he visited WB.

That aside, I simply wonder if just like some have suggested, that now that Kaido crashed on Kidd's party, that if they were to share with him their plan to take down Shanks, if he wouldn't encourage their endeavour? If he were to make that decision, this would be the proof that he's resentful towards Shanks. It might even suggest that back then he was injured or humiliated by him. And of course because he prevented him from going after WB.

It might be too early to say for sure if they fought, and even if they did it might not have lasted long, but I just want to remind everyone that despite Kaido being all huge and everything, there's a good amount of strong fighters that aren't huge. Heck even Luffy is one, and he is supposed to surpass all those strong fighters, including the Yonko and Shanks in particular. As we've seen in this arc, it's not just a matter of Luffy getting allies, he really needs to become strong in order to fight the stronger guys, and the best proof is Gear 4 and how it is significantly more powerful than the rest of Luffy's arsenal. So things might not be as they seem, Kaido is by no way weak, but he's not invincible either. And Shanks could be stronger than some think. Since we simply don't have any clues about their power, or very little to compare their potential power levels, we can just theorize about what might happened, and I doubt we'll ever get those questions answered. Unless we get a flashback involving those two, it might not be possible to know how things went, and it might not be a game changer. I doubt Oda will answer the question about how strong Shanks is, before things get really serious, for example if he were to fight Kidd and co.And he might off panel that fight too, and keep us hanging till Luffy faces him.

Really? Thought someone in the manga said Kaidou intercepted Shanks to prevent him from saving Ace and Whitebeard.

Other way round... Shanks is not the kind to run away from a fight. The guy demands respect and he gets it without batting an eyelash. How could you have thought he ran from a fight with Kaidou? Lets not put Shanks on the same level as BB.

Lol no. That doesn't even follow. What's kaido's business if shanks wants to go to the war? It's not like Shanks could have put more effort into it than WB himself. Even if Kaido was trying to take advantage of the chaos, going after a 3rd party yonko doesn't make sense. Anyway, it was the other way round. Shanks intercepted Kaido's attack on WB

Actually, shanks is precisely the type that would run away, avoid or otherwise not have a battle if he can. That specific personality quirk of his has been a major plot point through the manga. Take his very first appearance during the first chapter. A punk broke a bottle of booze on his head. And what did shanks do? Precisely squat, he went ahead and cleaned the mess himself. Then what about the time he met with WB? He did have a skirmish with WB however the original reason he went there was to ask Ace to stop his vendetta against BB. And even before he clashed with WB he commented on the era of recklessness. And what about during the war? Shanks did not pick a single fight there, he actually stopped the fighting altogether. It was under the threat of thoroughly obliterating whoever dared disobey however he did stop the fight and the bloodshed. Shanks certainly wouldn't back away from a fight which he has no option but fighting but other than that he would certainly avoid a fight if its a viable option.

Kaidou wants Whitebeard dead, and Shanks would prevent that from happening. But if Shanks intercepted Kaidou, then yeah, he wouldn't run. I assumed he was running from Kaidou because he was intercepted and wanted to save Whitebeard.

It does. The main reason why the Yonkou aren't going after each other is because they'll be ripe picking for another Yonkou or Marine after the battle.

Thats completely different from running away and what my post was about. Shanks avoids conflict and is very diplomatic... He would only take action if he needed to do so. In this case, stopping Kaido from advancing was something he could not shy away from. Even remotely suggesting that Shanks ran away from Kaido in any shape or form is an insult to his character. The guy arrived at Marineford and was ready to take on whoever wanted to challenge him... Does that sound like the kind of person who would run away or retreat against Kaido?

People seem to severely underestimate Shanks. Just because he doesn't go around jumping of Islands or can't tilt Marineford and doesn't go by some scary or epic title, doesn't mean he cant be OP.

If the recent info on Kaido is any indication, he wanted to challenge Whitebeard to die - seeing as WB was realistically the only one who could kill him (at least thats my interpretation). Shanks wanted to stop the war, not save Whitebeard.

My point is not that shanks is a coward or anything of the sort, just that he would not have a battle which he can avoid fighting. I am not saying shanks rank away scared from kaido. My point would be more along the lines that if there was something he can do to not have that battle then he would do it. And to be fair, if there isn't a reason to fight kaido it wouldn't be weird in the slightest that shanks simply bails...

Why would Shanks oppose Kaido just to end up running away and then Kaido decides to not go after Whitebeard in the end? Things went Shank's way, so if they fought, it's likely that Kaido lost or Shanks simply pressured him enough for Kaido to consider retreating as the best option.

What gives you the impression that Shanks would back away from a fight with Kaidou when he was willing to fight everyone in Marineford... some who he had no reason to fight nor knew who they were. Just because he chose not to fight in the flashback does not mean that is his characters trait. Kaidou was going after WB and Shanks was going to stop him. If a reason is required for Shanks, then there it is. He wasn't going to let Kaidou advance.
