So Horikoshi's health problem is bigger than I imagined. If it stays that way, they'll probably give the WT / HxH treatment to the series, which can be a good or bad thing.

No, please no..... I really hope this is closer to a Kishi situation back when he was still a rookie, he took a couple of breaks until he got used to his work schedule.... If not that, then an Oda-like solution where he takes breaks once in a while would be suitable.

Haikyuu has been really bad lately, maybe now people are finally seeing.

it's more that it's far too drawn out rather than being outright bad. This match with zero hype at all started, what, 30 chapters ago? and it's probably got at least 10 left since they're just getting to the 3rd set, potentially much more (though hopefully the bad rankings will encourage the writer to move faster).

It's looking likely to last longer than Shiratorizawa at this point but that match while long was massively hyped up from near the start as being a huge challenge so it being long worked, plus that match had Bokuto making the side really entertaining not to mention there was a bunch of character development. This is just some random unimportant match that's going on for way too long.

We shouldn't overreact to Horikoshi taking breaks.
He personally just think he's taking breaks so he doesn't overwork himself and cause a serious issue.
Being a mangaka is already a pretty exhausting, so I wouldn't take the breaks as being a serious health issue until we get an indefinite hiatus

I read the one-shot of Golem Hearts. This shit's gonna be big, man. Feels like the early chapters of One Piece
exactly 20 years later. :oooh

Black Clover and Harem are in a dead heat! Which will come out on top?!

Putting that aside, its always interesting to see how kimetsu's growth is perceived, especially in this forum. If say someone who doesn't read the series looked at these numbers, kimetsu wouldn't really seem that impressive. It might seem rather curious why the hurdle is rather low each time, rising incrementally. The next hurdle would be 150k. People here might argue however that its growing, slowly but surely growing, so thats good and its average ranking in the TOC is also good so its overall doing really well considering how it was in the beginning.

Comparing Kimetsu to other series at Volumes 7 and 8:

World Trigger
│*82179 (4)│113357│******│131829│------┃*,131,829 (*25)┃2014/09|ワールドトリガー 7
│*69982 (3)│114309│------│------│------┃*,114,309 (*10)┃2014/10|ワールドトリガー 8

Black Clover
│*78464 (4)│121023│******│146766│------┃*,146,766 (*25)┃2016/08|ブラッククローバー 7
│*98616 (6)│129115│------│------│------┃*,129,115 (*13)┃2016/10|ブラッククローバー 8

Kimetsu no Yaiba
│*57083 (3)│*96527│------│------│------┃*,*96,527 (*10)┃2017/08|鬼滅の刃 7
│*81312 (5)│109936│122681│------│------┃*,122,681 (*19)┃2017/10|鬼滅の刃 8

These are the closest in comparison because others like Soma and Heroaca were in a different league. World Trigger also had an anime at around volume 8 so that's also interesting in this comparison.

Finally had a look at full drive, so far my impression:

Maybe it's a translation thing, but I found the whole chapter super choppy.

We jumped from the hero being bullied as a kid and being taught table tennis in order to take pride in himself or something, then Boom!

Four years passed, grandpa died and apparently the hero now wants to conquer japan. And is already at a level good enough to play against the best age appropriate female player in the country.

It feels like the author wanted to throw in so much in case we lose interest that he forgot to let the story breathe, is it his first serialization or something?

As a result, I'm not very convinced by the characters or the future of the story.

I feel it would have worked better if the author focussed on one angle only. For example he could have stayed with the hero as a 9 year old and properly tell the origin story, then we will get why the hero is so passionate about TT and build the relationship with his grandpa enough to know why the guy was such a bigshot. Have the old man die at the end of the chapter would be a good spot to end.

Another method is to start from the girls point of view, go through her life to really show how TT is a legit big thing in Japan, and how she's a bigshot. Drop in a few rumours about the hero and have them meet and have an epic playout.

I'm just not sure about this mish mash of origin story + sport battle shonen + lots of facts we are expected to just accept in one chapter.

We barely knew the insecure 9 year old hero before he turned into this 13 year old kid with mad skills, we barely saw the grandpa before they killed him off and we barely knew of his death before learning that he's some bigshot TT player.

All in all a messy start. The art is nice if incomprehensible in action scenes. I feel the special moves of the characters arent clear enough, I never got the impression that the girl was particularly fast or that the boy did a special loopy move.

If you like following sports manga for either the art or the story, I think this chapter comes up short in both aspects

It's only the first chapter, so there's still hope, but there's already a traditionally non-sweaty sport manga with a red haired hero in RxL which is superior as far as I can tell, so I'm not placing my bets on this one.

Also...you cant be 3/4 japanese and get red hair, its a genetics thing. So either someone's been dying a child's hair since he was 9 years old (which is very wrong) or the author just really really wants a protagonist with an edgy hairstyle.

Also Kimetsu has a good backlog. I'm not sure how it compares to Black Clover's backlog at the time though.

I still think Kimetsu will surpass BC at some point. It's a matter of when, I have my fingers crossed that it will happen before the anime arrives. I mean Kimetsu surpassing Black Clover pre-anime sales.

A friend of mine was commenting on this situation on an anime reddit:
"You know, I at least give Pierrot and Toei credit for trying to put anime-original content. I may end up hating My Hero Academia because much like JoJo, it's a copy of the manga, which means: Villains don't get development, side characters don't get development, nothing gets development the way they should. Nothing changes because stupid fans and bullshit. I don't care about fans, Can any JoJo anime be called adaptation when they're just copies of the source material, and if I wanna read the same story I go to the manga and that's it? You want an actual adaptation? Shokugeki no Soma season 2 it's where it's at. It went to the point of the tournament without bogging it down by unnecessary build up. If it was all faithful adaptation, it would be a half-boring tournament. I like the loose adaptations the better. That's why I don't like modern anime, they're pointless copies of sources just to promote sources, that's why they never end"

And I tried to informing him about adpatations and all that, but I also wanted to see opinions from others in regards, but at the same time thought, how could he said that? Although I agree with him on Soma. I liked it better than Season 3 so far.

If this pace is kept, it won't be too long to be at BC'c pre-anime level, which is around 20k to 30k away. It can probably match up by volume 10. BC however, seems to be having decent backlog sales but the new volume is still growing very slowly. There's a possibility that it won't show up for the 4th week looking around at the daily rankings of e-honne, bunkyodo, etc. This is honestly not a good thing as most series with new, hyped anime are able to last at least 5 weeks.

Soma however, despite the "airing with great reviews/reception!" announcement, really isn't growing from a volume sales viewpoint. While volume 26 is still within the weekly top 200 in Shoseki, the only other volume that's moving is Volume 25. You really wonder why a series with such a great start has plateaued and is even slowly declining and about to be overtaken by Neverland. I know the Azami saga might have been going on longer, probably too much, than it should have but its really struggling to even do 4 weeks on Oricon. You have to wonder whether the new editor will be able to kick things back in a direction such that sales might see some long needed growth. Despite being the 5th best selling series in the magazine, there is a 250k gap between it and Heroaca in the new volume sales in a month.

I never realized the whole banter between Machi and Hisoka was filler that expanded the canon material until I read the corresponding chapter. Just can’t find myself ever being mad at that kind of filler. It brings more to the table.

In my opinion filler is better when it has at least a little connection to something within the manga, though I still struggle with calling it filler when it's like that but there is no other term to call it will so filler will have to do. Stuff like that does bring up an interesting debate, is things like that that are shown in greater detail in the series anime still considered non-cannon?
