Did people actually widely claim Jellal >>> Laxus? Outside of one or two 'fringe' users I've only ever seen people say Laxus > Jellal or that they are in the same tier.

Edolas arc was cancer IMO, it completely ruined mystogan in my view as well.
Mystogan actually not having magic power, and his spells being borrowed = L
The entire Edolas arc = L
Mystogan never to be seen again = L

Yeah, Mystogan really got screwed over in the grand scheme of things.

That said, I actually thought him his spells being Holder Magic was really unique. Especially considering that he was largely thought of as being second only to Laxus at the time (Gildarts wasn't around). Had he stayed it would have been dope to see a Caster/Holder Magic hybrid.

My problems with the 'good' Jellal:

- he's pretty boring. He's kinda depressed with his past, and that took all the fun and life out of his character. Compare that to The villain Jellal who was cunning, flamboyant, manipulative etc - overall was much more entertaining and lively. Evil Jellal did much more in 40 episodes than good Jellal has done in 200+ episodes

That's a fair criticism, though Evil Jellal doing more within those 40 chapters compared to the ones that Good Jellal was in is more due to Good Jellal being a side character rather than the main villain of an arc. As for his attitude, personally I think there are hints of Jellal's old cunning and wit during Tartaros (like when he joked about an escaped criminal putting other escaped criminals in jail), but other than that its hard to deny that he can be a bit one-note.

- His entire existence right now is for JerZa.

Honestly I think this is the fate that befalls all secondary characters that are love interests of main characters - Levy and Juvia both suffered the same fate as Jellal. It hurts even more with Jellal though because of how rarely Jellal and Erza actually interact, and even when they do interact its usually cliche BS.

- He seemingly has mastery over several magic - 4 elements (implied from Abyss Break), dark magic; and knows other random magic like self destruction, mystogan magic, barrier etc but all we ever see from the guy is freaking Grand Chariot lmao. Every time I see that shitty spell, the guy goes further down for me.

LMAO, agreed that Mashima should write him as using a wider variety of Magic, but I've always loved GC.

At the very least he did use Bind Snake recently, so maybe there's some hope of him pulling out Altairis or Abyss Break eh? Ah, a fan can dream.

And yes, the final issue is one that you mentioned.
The entire existence of CS was to end Zeref's influence and finally Zeref himself. The guy and his guild didn't even get to meet Zeref lmao. Instead he meets Acnologia for JerZa. That's probably the biggest FU to the character and his guild

Mashima even teased it with Jellal's entrance into the Alvarez arc and Zeref's comment when Gray got to the guild. Pushing back Acnologia was a good feat but holy hell, Jellal and CS got shafted hard. Even if for some reason they could not meet Zeref for some weird narrative reason, at least have them beat August in a rematch. At least then they would have taken out Zeref's ace-in-the-hole Spriggan and unknowingly have beaten Zeref's own flesh and blood.

I actually like JerZa, think it's the best 'ship' of the series inspite of not really liking Jellal and Erza. But hate that Jellal right now exists solely for the ship

Eh, JerZa is better than most ships IMO but its not really that appealing given the rarity of them actually interacting.

I think he won in the tourney against Laxus when Alvarez was running but that was 2 years ago.

August is immune to almost all forms of magic. He can be defeated, for the most part, only through physical combat (considering that all holder magic we've seen so far were fodder). And if we consider August gaining intangibility (no reason why he wouldn't know Ajeel's sand magic), then the get becomes literally unbeatable lmao, Hiro probably never paid attention there.

And August is top tier in stats as well. He overwhelmed GILDARTS in physical combat, which implies that August is likely the best physical among mages (not including dragons like Acnologia) in the series as well, maybe just second to Dragon Force Natsu..........but that's about it

The only one with speed in CS is Jellal and Racer, and that's due to Meteor and timeslow..........which August copies and becomes faster as well.
CS never stood any chance at all. They'd get fodderized in rematch as well.

August was one of the only two Spriggan who didn't disappoint me in terms of power level or living upto the hype (but he did disappoint in other ways.......like killing himself for no reason)
The other one was God Serena, who fodderized and tanked all offense thrown at him by GOI and Jura, in base and in DS mode. But then he got off'd by Acno -_-
