Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Late to the party, but that resolves that. Kind of. That is as quick as a response as you can get, honestly. Now the whole thing can blow over without hopefully too much damage. People do make mistakes from time to time. If the name Maruta really referred to the project (in addition to the villains), then I can definitely see why he used it. It’s a perfectly fitting name for his character.

I’m just glad Hori made a statement and apologized for it. (Even if he didn’t apologize for it, he’s going to change the name, which is basically what people wanted anyway.) I don’t blame the countries directly affected by the atrocities if this soured HeroAca for them. Just as long as the author doesn’t make that mistake again.

(Also, to be really honest, fans are just gonna call him Ujiko or The Doctor anyways.)

Lets put it this way. You all can speak your "opinion" about any topic you want. But it's still MOOT because your education on a certain subject does not imply you've dealt with the consequences of what happened during those events.

My grandfather watched his parents struggle with the British rule, ended up finding his escape by the use of cigarettes. He forged a new path for his family but his habit of cigarettes led him to develop lung cancer and pass away before his time in turn leading to turmoil and struggle within my Mom's side of the family almost every day for the past 2-3 decades now. This is a story that can be seen in A LOT of families back in South Asia.
How can your educated opinion on something you've not experienced help this? It can't because you've not something that was caused due to the side effects of being oppressed. Anything you say as an outsider is moot and its rich to assume your opinion on the topic matters.

The current political climate between India and Pakistan is literally the after-effects of the British Rule. Led to three wars and on the brink of another. Countless families ruined, dead and forever changed. Your education on the subject does not give you any right to impose an opinion (whether for or against) on what these families feel. You have every right to say what you want, as most already do. But they are invalid and moot.
Any change that is required, has to happen from within and between all the concerned parties involved. It's why what is currently happening in India is horrible because its taking 3 steps back. But that's going besides the point now.

Same with this entire Horikoshi problem. Koreans and Chinese have every right to be angry and Horikoshi, if it was indeed deemed offensive by THEM. And Horikoshi needs to accept he made a mistake and make changes as needed (which he supposedly will do).

An outsider cannot tell them they should NOT be offended by it. It's rich to think you have any role in this whatsoever because its not YOUR history. If you want to share their anger, so be it. But there are many here who think it's an "overreaction" which is downright offensive.
You can't just say people who say that anything is an "overreaction" are wrong by default. You have to listen to their arguments and then decide. Do you not admit that excluding opinions based on race is racism? That is a question I would like to have you answer.

You can divide people by races. "Only people from this race can understand our problems and speak for them!" Then by ages. Then by weights. "Unless you're a 31 year old Nigerian cis male how can you understand our struggle or speak for us?" How far are you going to divide until you realize that at the very bottom level of division, once you have separated people by all these classifiers, just like dividing any number by 2 repeatedly, we are only left dealing with individuals? We should listen to individual opinions based on individual merit and not divide by groups/classes/races.

Isn't that the whole point of being progressive? To see people as valued individuals and not member #131512 of their affiliation?

Except the fact that he never meant for the doctor's name to be in reference to that nor was he trying to offend them so their angry are entirely misplaced towards him and is just towards the word in itself not caring about the context or intention if the mangaka in question. That being said just because their angry doesn't mean they can spam his Twitter and harass hours after the statement came out.

I wonder if HeroAca will go on an emergency break this issue. Or if they'll have enough time to change the name before the next issue is released. IIRC, Jump chapters are completed two or three weeks in advance, so they'll have to scrub every mention of the name Maruta in the following chapters before mass printing. Of course, most people probably don't know that.

I'm not completely sure how this'll affect the immediate following issues, tbh, so I'm just speculating..

Yeesh, I wake up to see the MHA thing has only escalated. Anyway, I think this thread from one of the smartest people I know is worth reading:

But I don't think so, and why would he do it?

And how long does it take to change a name?

I'm beginning to agree with this stance, honestly. It's kind of telling that this sort of thing wasn't caught by the editor or any of the higher ups at Shueisha.

On a different note, it's February 4 in Japan, right? We'll soon learn how all of the new series are doing, and hopefully finally get a sense as to where Yozakura and Miitama are headed.

Or simply they believed that was just a name and they didn't expect the toxic comment of angry Twitter SJW.

then I am convinced that Horikoshi purposely chose a name that would recall this event.

Obviously being the character in question a mad scientist, there is nothing strange in all this, since he gave him that name obviously to indicate his continuous experiments on civilians with quirks, exactly like the project actually existed above.

Put together some one-shot/first chapter comparisons for Guardian. Probably a couple more here and there, but it mostly diverged in the second half.

Great work. :verily
Putting these panels side by side we can see more clearly how the artwork evolved. The scenes look a lot more impactful in the serialized version. Anyone know which year was the one shot published?

The only thing i will say about the topic is that i'm glad with the Horikoshi and SJ response for the thing, acknowledge the "problem" say it of course he didn't made with any bad intention and the name will be changed, but without bowing down his/their head apologizing a hundred of times, don't do that, a quick look at Horikoshi's tweet responses is enough to understand why, a bunch of entitled teens or young adults, most of them that weren't even remotely impacted by the thing referenced demanding a forced apologize and some of them even making jokes about Hiroshima and other events, just don't cater to these people, they don't care about the "apologize", they just want to put him down, the others will understand that wasn't made with bad intention and move on.

Tsurun Hatomune just posted the entire first chapter of Mitama Security on Twitter as a promotion for the first volume's release. I don't expect it to go insanely viral like Chainsaw Man's first chapter did (or Fujimoto's other one-shot for that matter), but I'm curious to see how well it will spread online.

You can't just say people who say that anything is an "overreaction" are wrong by default. You have to listen to their arguments and then decide. Do you not admit that excluding opinions based on race is racism? That is a question I would like to have you answer.
Such a blatantly ignorant question. You've framed your question in a way that anything aside from your wanted answer = racism.
Here's the basic definition of racism

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

At no point has anyone over here mentioned their race is superior and that's why you or another race cannot talk about something their race had experienced.

It's a simple fact that you've not had to live with the consequences of the actions of another race/country or an event.
It isnt just the knowledge of what happened but rather the day to day knowledge from actual living experience of how that has impacted your race/society and yourself and your family. It's something no amount of "education" can provide.

Having your opinions not heard just because you thought you had a point is not racism. It's just a hissy fit. Just like not having a "white lives matter" parade is not racism.

Stop undermining what actual racism is.

You can divide people by races. "Only people from this race can understand our problems and speak for them!" Then by ages. Then by weights. "Unless you're a 31 year old Nigerian cis male how can you understand our struggle or speak for us?" How far are you going to divide until you realize that at the very bottom level of division we are dealing with individuals? We should listen to individual opinions based on individual merit and not divide by groups/classes/races.
what a poor straw hat argument. No one is talking about age or anything other than race. The world has been divided thus far by race. Systematic racism exists even today even in modern cities.
Want an example?
Ask a white guy what they earn in Dubai and then ask a South Asian what they earn for the same job. Here's a hint. The south asian will earn 2-3x less than the white guy solely because of their skin color.

Literally, the majority of human conflicts have happened because of race. Hatred still exists in most countries because of race. Discrimination is done based on race (and gender but that's a whole different topic). This topic started out because of Korean and Chinese reaction to Horikoshi's tweet. It's about race. Your point right now made no sense and was moot.

Isn't that the whole point of being progressive? To see people as valued individuals and not member #131512 of their affiliation?
Yeah in an ideal world.
I'd love nothing more than to have a conversation in a world that wasn't divided by borders and race or gender. Where people can move across different parts of the world with ease and no tension.

But that's not the world we live in. America, the world leader, is a country that is built by immigrants but still vehemently display racism and discrimination in a lot of things that take place.

Racism exists in every corner of the world.
Acting like it doesn't and as if all races have had equal opportunities when they don't or have experienced the same things when their history says something else completely is on you and not anyone else.

The word means a very particular thing and that's pretty much what signifies the character as well. Or so I believe (dont read MHA currently). If there is a connection between the word and the history behind it, they have every right to be upset irrespective of whether he meant to hurt anyone. I doubt he meant to hurt anyone and probably assumed it would be a clever use of the name and wasn't gonna be a controversy.

In any case, that said, I dont think he needs to be harassed on twitter. But twitter users aren't known for being logical about how they react to something. Remember, Kubo got harassed for trying to kill off a major character which ultimately made him change his mind.

What's important is Horikoshi corrects it, issues an apology and moves on.

That's really cool. I don't have Twitter, but how many followers does Tsurun Hatomune have?
