Either way Gohan did take the torch from Goku in the Cell Games, it was after Buu appeared that Goku took it again.

Yeah, because he intended to end the series. It went on, so it went back to normal. If there is DB after Z don't be shocked if uub isn't the main character.

I disagree

Goku might not have compared himself against Vegeta, in the same way that Vegeta did against him. However, Vegeta certainly was played off against him time and time in the manga - almost to the point where you think of Goku or Vegeta and you almost instantly think of their relationship with each other.

Even if you don't consider that a rivalry, Gohan didn't even have that kind of relationship with any other character...

That doesnt change that Goku didnt have a rival, he was always the strongest and the one that saved the day. Vegeta's rivalry was totally one sided, it did wonders in his character without doubt, but one sided. Gohan post-Cell could have become the object of Vegeta's rivalry after Goku's death and it would be the same.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter what you call it - Gohan's character really needed someone to be played off against (a 'Vegeta' of his own)

He needed more and unfortunately never received it.

This stopped him generating the love and interest that I wish he could have obtained.
