What evidence is there that gun violence in the US is related to civil unrest though? You have a few cases of mass shootings but the actual bulk of gun deaths relate to actual crimes. As in, criminals having guns. Then there is the suicide bit which is also significant here. Sure, guns don't fire themselves. However there is ample evidence that having a society with less guns is far more effective at reducing crimes and even suicides. If limiting access to guns reduces gun deaths and gun suicides... why not do it?

I also found this bit about democrat vs republican in terms of gun violence
. And another study that shows gun ownership relates to gun crimes. In essence, limiting access to guns is something that is basically proven to work as an effective measure to reduce gun crimes and suicides. It benefits everyone. Also worth noting, how is it possible to decrease gun crimes on the microcosm? That doesn't even make sense. The issue is at large widespread availability of guns. What the US has is a national problem, solutions should at large be implemented at the national level. Any measure you implement in a specific place will be almost pointless if the measure can be overcome by going to the next town or city.
Here is an example of how to decrease gun crimes in a citywide scale. [Richmond, Virginia]

Durham and Mayor Dwight Jones presented the city’s crime statistics for 2015 on Friday. The pair touted the fact that violent crime dropped by 12 percent last year, compared to 2014.
"It’s the lowest amount of violent crime the city has seen in the last 45 years," Durham said.
Of the 39 homicides in 2015, Durham said 35 were committed using a firearm, and another 169 people were shot and injured last year. Durham admitted there is work to be done in order to curb gun violence in the city.
"We cannot tolerate this, and no longer accept this," Durham said.
Durham said statistics show the majority of guns used in crimes along the eastern seaboard came from Virginia.
No undermining of the constitution, no trampling of the rights of law abiding Americans, nothing extensive, and rather than target the "guns" they are targeting the people who broke the law to acquire them. Better yet, there is no jailtime or anything, they can turn their gun in and get $250, helping to address the "civic unrest" over lack of money.

Why implement something at the national level, when cities, counties, and the state can do it themselves and generate results fast?

So... just ignoring the other stuff I posted? Anyways, what they are doing is barely a start to their problem considering their actual rates. In the end it changes nothing about what I posted earlier. And while actually taking away guns from people would affect what you perceive is a right to own guns, how would what obama suggest affect said rights? His proposal is basically stricter background checks. Which is also barely a first step in the numerous things they should be doing.

It did address most of your post. After implementing this strategy violent crime with guns decreased. You said and linked to stuff showing the less guns there are, then the less crime. I posted a feasible working application of decreasing the number of people using guns illegally bein correlated to a decreased incident of crime involving guns.

Mr Rubio stated that the president would want to confiscate every gun not simply enhance background checks (which clearly does nothing for illegals who already have guns). Would an illegal have even had a background check? Probably not since the gun is considered illegal. So again the Obama plan would be flawed at the conceptual level.

That measure working takes nothing from the other information. If anything it's good ideas to complement what I suggest. You get authorities working with people to take illegal guns away, that's awesome. But still, it's barely a start.

So... what reason is there to think there is an iota of truth to what rubio said? The guy is clearly fear mongering . There is no reasonable reason to think obama is doing something different from what he has proposed. At best obama has alluded to australia's mandatory gun buy back program which as far as the world is concerned worked spectacularly well (basically, they made the country better off by literally taking guns away. Well, they bought them from people but still).

Why would the devices need to be blamed. Mr. Trump said it best last night.

Instead of undermining the constitution why not target things to help people feel better and more well off. If people were more well off and not pouring out their souls to taxes funding useless programs people don't care about, then there wouldnt be civic unrest. If there were no civic unrest there wouldnt be shootings. More lives are saved this way than in the way you propose. It is more logical to target making people feel better than assault an entire industry of machines. Also note where the shooting issues are prevalent, like Chicago, are democratic run places, so the democrats need to propose solutions and show results that measures can decrease shootings on the microcosm scale before they address issues on the national level.
Obviously because guns make it easier to kill people. If you wanted to kill a huge animal, would you take a gun with you or a knife? Likewise, people prefer guns because you can take out more opponents at further range than you can with a knife, sword, or a bat. If you read my post, you'd actually understand why the devices need to be blamed, and why Trump's statement is nonsense.

Wait, aren't you republicans against helping people feel better and more well off if they're not rich? I don't think you believe in helping others at all. But I agree, we shouldn't have to put too much money in useless programs like defense, it should be used for taking care of those who need the money. However, civic unrest isn't the cause of mass shootings, it's usually the cause of more personal shootings. we need a stricter gun control and more policing, like the stop and frisk law in NYC.

using democrat and republican is a pathetic excuse. the problem with Chicago is, as you implied, people aren't well off and are segregated one way or another. Even if it was easier to buy guns, there'd still be gun violence until more people can live better.

I also noticed how you tend to ignore most of my posts directed at you. Hmm.

I don't know if suicide should be brought up because there are many ways to commit suicide. Guns are just faster, I guess, but there's also hanging, jumping off bridge or building, slitting throat or wrist, overdosing, and more.

Because republicans want weapons industry to give them money, and weapons industry want to make money whether or not lives are lost.

I don't know why you take what Rubio says as gospel. But then again, people will blindly believe what the person they're supporting says, no matter how false or exaggerated it is. If Obama wanted to confiscate every gun, why not pass a law to do just that instead of a more rigorous background check?

Illegal or not, anyone who wants to buy a gun would be forced to get a background check. If done correctly, it can also detect illegals and get them deported from the country. win-win.

Every American has to feel better and be more well off than they are now so that crime can decrease. Increasing the amount of money in peoples pockets, increasing the number of jobs, focusing on getting jobs and not preventing jobs going to other countries, and investing in more US energy independence will increase the well being of every American. I dont see how civic unrest can't be the cause of mass shootings. When was the last time someone with a well paying job and happy family situation unleashed a mass shooting event? I havent seen any. Ive seen people lose jobs and then unleash their anger though, which by any definition is "civic unrest".You dont see straight A popular volunteer entrepreneurial students unleashing bullets on masses do you?

Your last sentence highly suggests and strongly implies that no matter what we do to control guns there will still be gun violence, which is why gun control does not need to be stricter or anything. Even in Democratic strongholds places like Chicago still have gun issues, now, isnt that baffling? Democrats who seem to collectively want enhanced gun legislation are still having crime rates higher than the historical average. Obama was from that state too wasn't he? Whats that say about his gun control efficiency, terrible track record for him.

The weapons industry can employ more people. Naval shipyards are plcaes that employ thousands, then you have defense contractors by them that higher hundreds as well. More weapons funding is a win win situation for all. American is stronger against the increasing threads from ISIL, Al Qaeda, Russia, China, and North Korea, tons of jobs in America are made, economy grows. Everyone wins.

Obama wouldnt pass a confiscation law because it would get struck down, no one in america wants guns confiscated. And Ive yet to see polls suggest that Americans say gun control is a major issue or one that needs work.

Im confused at how an illegal gun owner would get background checked. This owner would have never put their gun information anywhere.

None of that supports what you say. Even if the memo is real it mostly talks about confiscating guns from people who are not legally allowed to own one, not "law abiding citizens". And there is a mention of a gun buyback they merely talk about how to make it effective, not actually implementing one. And even then, the memo is 3 years old. So not only does the memo not say what the site claims but if it did it wouldn't necessarily be relevant considering it was written 3 years ago.

I'd say it is an issue. That many people killing themselves is a social issue, one related to guns at that since that is the means through which it is carried out, and thus it should be society's concern to deal with this as with any other gun related issue. Of course, the objective should be to reduce suicides as a whole. but as far as I can tell reducing gun availability would succeed in that.

The article is literally taking it's source out of context to make an asinine point....

That will help with crimes, but it won't necessarily stop mass murder. Stricter gun control law could have stopped Lanza because his mom wouldn't have been allowed to buy guns as she had someone with Asperger's in the same house as the guns. Just an example.

Dylann Roof shot up people in a church because he wanted to incite a racial war. Not civic unrest. Columbine High School massacre occurred because the two murderers were pissed off at how their peers treated them. I admit I can't think of any other incident where mass murder was committed by people with comfortable family life, though.

Gun violence won't disappear, but we can reduce gun violence. Is this not desirable? Stricter gun control laws can save lives and reduce gun violence. And no, it's not baffling because Chicago is not as economically well off. A republican could run the city and get rid of gun control laws, and all that will do is increase gun violence because again, "civic unrest," as well as social unrest. I'm sure a well-off city with strict gun control will have less violence than a poor city with no gun control. NYC had stop-and-frisk law, which reduced gun violence, but once it was considered unconstitutional due to racial profiling, gun violence shot up. I got this from NY Post or Daily News though, and it's obvious they're biased towards cops.

They get tons of money, they can employ more people now. Problem is, they don't want to, they just want to pocket profits. More weapons funding is a lose-lose situation because it wastes taxpayers' money and allows the weapons industry and defense contractors to continue charging tons of money, misusing the money they receive, and pocketing the profits. More people would win if the government spent less in defense and more in welfare. Jobs can be created by building or improving the infrastructure using the money saved from reducing defense budget.

I'm sure while he wants to confiscate guns, Obama won't bother to do it. What Americans think isn't as important as what's actually happening, and what's actually happening is that gun violence is high. Mass shootings, more personal shootings, etc.

Gun seller would do a background check on the person before selling the gun, and if it shows no record of him or that he doesn't belong in the country legally, then the seller can refuse to sell the gun and even call Immigration Control. Bye bye illegal person!

None of that supports what you say. Even if the memo is real it mostly talks about confiscating guns from people who are not legally allowed to own one, not "law abiding citizens". People killing them is a social issue, and it shouldn't be made out to be part of the gun issue because it honestly isn't. Even if guns are harder to acquire, there are other ways to commit suicide. It should be society's concern to deal with suicide as part of economical, social, and health issues, I don't see reducing gun availability making as much of a difference as you think, but I could be completely wrong here. I hope.

Typical republicans though.

He's a liar. That would directly violate the second amendment and would never be allowed to happen. The Republican-led congress would never vote for a such a thing.

Did they ever define what NewYorkValues ever meant? Ive been perplexed by whatever Ted Cruz meant by it.

That will help with crimes, but it won't necessarily stop mass murder. Stricter gun control law could have stopped Lanza because his mom wouldn't have been allowed to buy guns as she had someone with Asperger's in the same house as the guns. Just an example.
That infringes upon her right to buy a gun. Just because he had such a condition doesn't mean she ought to not have been able to buy a gun. You might as well say, anyone who has a child can not buy power tools, vehicles, alcohol, or medicine, and electronics, all of which endanger children just like a gun would. Either be consistent or don't have the rule at all.

Additionally, since he was hell bent on death and destruction, I would think he would have found another device to carry out such a scheme.

Dylann Roof shot up people in a church because he wanted to incite a racial war. Not civic unrest. Columbine High School massacre occurred because the two murderers were pissed off at how their peers treated them. I admit I can't think of any other incident where mass murder was committed by people with comfortable family life, though.
There was civic unrest, one would only want racial wars when other races are taking opportunities that belong to your own race. If other races were not stealing opportunities what other research would there be to dislike the race? Kids dont dislike each other based on looks, but rather which kid has the better opportunity provided to them.

Again school shootings would also be civic unrest, the students are being put in an abject situation because they have privileged opportunities that the others don't have. A person doesnt get bullied based on looks, but rather the opportunities provided to them, either monetary compensation, compensations through services that could be rendered (consultation work with school work), or social status.

I don't see any states in the southern US having more gun violence than NYC or Chicago. I cant recall this ever being an issue in the southern states, meanwhile in a place as big and large and liberal as NYC or Los Angelas or Chicago we have these issues. Republican leaders and republican peoples seem better suited and better acquainted with handling gun rights and handling measures to not have rampant gun issues that call for drastic measures.

Who would win in a weakened America. Lower defense spending opens the country up to more situations like this.

More people fleeing America to seek opportunity in other countries for better economic opportunies because there are none here. Then they leave and get trained by the enemies in terrorist strongholds to become new enemies of America. Im continually afraid of the world that people want to live in with decreased funding. Do they not see the issues in other countries, the Iran incidednt with out sailors for example, and the powerful Hydrogen Bomb in North Korea. Military funding is needed more than ever to keep us safe. Are you in America, if not then perhaps I can see why one would want America to have decreased funding. Non americans always want America to fail.

This just reeks of pseudo-mccarthyism dude. Increased military funding isn't going to keep us safer and prevent terrorist attacks. Putting boots on the ground and taking back the territories claimed by ISIS isn't going to eradicate the threat of terrorism either. A war on terrorism cannot be won, especially not by physical means.

Spending more or less on defense isn't going to prevent people from wanting to be extremists. Where is that notion even coming from?

You hear southerners/midwesterners putting down "big city ideas" all of the time. He said it at a rally, he's clearly appealing to his base. I'm not sure if Cruz really believes any of that, considering he went to Harvard and his wife works for Goldman Sachs in NYC....:fail

I'd be interested in knowing whether Cruz has ever invoked Goldman Sachs in his criticism of Hillary Clinton when his wife works there...:lmao

This is just another example of how disingenuous Cruz actually is. He's the classic sleezeball politician masquerading as the opposite. How he's even in the running is mindboggling to me.

That's a bit too far IMO. Sandy Hook happened due to shit parenting. The issue with it is the kind of weapons his mom had, not the fact that she owned a gun. AR-15s are engineered to kill as many people as possible, there's no reason why a civilians needs one of those. If Lanza didn't have one of those, many people would have survived.

Trumps twitter today is very intriging. Definitely gives me more reasons for not supporting Cruz.

I mean, if you're a conservative and the NY Daily News is doing this to you, you have to be screwed...right?

Not to mention that his hypocritical stance on the birther issue isn't going away, nor are the questions regarding his citizenship. The law isn't as cut and dry as he seems to think it is. His candidacy could absolutely be challenged in court. It's obvious the framers of The Constitution required the president to be born in the US. The automatic naturalization of children born to Americans abroad is due to the statute saying that they should be treated as natural born citizens (so as to avoid a lengthy naturalization process), not that they actually are. James Madison even removed "natural born" from the law after redrafting it only 5 years later.

Either be consistent or don't have the rule at all.

Additionally, since he was hell bent on death and destruction, I would think he would have found another device to carry out such a scheme.
Well, at the very least she should have been a better parent, making sure the guns were locked up and her younger son couldn't access it at all. I don't see how it infringes on her right when such weapons shouldn't be in the same house as someone who isn't mentally capable.

The comparison makes no sense because power tools, vehicles, alcohol, medicine, and electronics are not used to kill living things, they actually have other uses. Guns have one use only - to shoot people. If kids play with it, people tend to get hurt or die, if we are to trust the news.

What opportunities were black people taking that belonged to the white people? Even back during the colonial times, racism existed even when blacks were slaves, just because of the color of their skin. Are you then justifying black people attacking white people, or any minorities attacking white people, for that matter? Because white people have enslaved black people and even now refuse to give them complete rights. Black people and Hispanics are also less likely to get jobs and less likely to get paid well when compared to white people, so are they justified in shooting white people?

First two sentences are quite ignorant and idiotic, though at least it's not as bad as the things the GOP candidates have been saying.

Or, because students bully others because of how they look or come across as in order to make themselves feel better. Lot of people have been bullied based on their looks more than anything else... or even based on their sexual orientation. I am confused as to how you can state otherwise.

Chicago and NYC are two of the biggest cities in the US. How many areas in the South are as worse off or divided as NYC or Chicago, anyway?

Also, according to this, you are wrong. More gun-related deaths in states with the least gun laws. Googling the states with most gun violence has shown me articles that state lots of southern states see plenty of gun violence. Which is weird given NY and IL housing NYC and Chicago.

NYPD being "unconstitutional" when it came to searching people for illegal guns also apparently helped lower gun violence, which went back up when stop-and-frisk was outlawed.

Isn't that in America, and weren't they caught due to people in the city rather than military stuff? But that's just a silly thing republicans like to say to incite fear to get votes. How many terrorist attacks from ISIS or Al-Quaeda have happened on our soil? I don't see how increasing defense budget will help, except put us in more unnecessary debt.

Is there evidence that many people are fleeing America to seek opportunity in other countries? I mean, you can't blame them when Bush fucked up the economy, and spending so much on defense and warfare is just making things worse.

The country spends at least $500 billion in defense and warfare. If that much money hasn't prevented the Iran incident or us building just-as-powerful hydrogen bomb or stopping Korea from building the hydrogen bomb, increasing the amount isn't going to help anything, except enemies because it'll just increase our debt and hurt the economy and its people even more. Military funding won't keep us safe, not when they couldn't stop or prevent or do something with the amount that they already get.

Not all non-Americans want America to fail. But yes, I am in America and I love the country, which is why I will vote and make sure no republicans can destroy this country and take away freedom.

The main argument I see from republican candidates is fear mongering. They openly lie or exaggerate or misinform their voters in order to instill fear to get votes and support, and they constantly use "omg Obama was shit, he made the country worse!" argument and even blaming him for the racial divide.

Also, have you called out Trump and Cruz for arguing with each other, or apparently Bush and Rubio? Or do they get a free pass because they're republicans?

It's clear majority of the people don't understand what creates terrorists or where the terrorists in the US come from. Trump's plan would just create more terrorists, and if Obama planned or plans on deporting people from Middle East back to Middle East, he will also be creating more terrorists and enemies. There have also been plenty of would-be homegrown terrorists, if the news are right, probably far more than would-be terrorists from foreign countries. Giving more money to warfare and defense to squander isn't going to help anything, at all. Hell, if anything it'll probably make things worse.

I also wouldn't be shocked if it ever got out that they sold to the enemies as well, willingly or unwillingly.

That's a bit too far IMO. Sandy Hook happened due to shit parenting. The issue with it is the kind of weapons his mom had, not the fact that she owned a gun. AR-15s are engineered to kill as many people as possible, there's no reason why a civilians needs one of those. If Lanza didn't have one of those, many people would have survived.
war on terrorism could be won, but I see it being difficult due to mixture of problems. Social, economical, and propaganda.

True, but wouldn't Lanza have still committed the murders with guns? If the mom locked the guns up or didn't train her kids, this could have been prevented or not have been as bad as it was.

Though yeah, I have no fucking idea why a civilian has an assault rifle or why it's even sold to civilians in the first place. I'd rather competent police officers who are fighting gangs have it, as I assume gangs own small machine guns and assault rifles. Could be completely wrong though.

Why exactly is what obama proposing unconstitutional? Or to be more specific, why are more extensive background checks unconstitutional? To me that seems like something that would ensure that only "law abiding citizens" can buy guys to begin with.

Also, I found this bit:
http://www.politifact.com/texas/sta...-bird-says-90-percent-americans-want-mandato/
Apparently people at the US do support the idea of more background checks in general.

I have to at least compliment bernie sanders for doing this. Sets him apart from Mrs. Clinton. Honoring one of the greatest activists of our country is very uplifting.

It isn't. The labeling of any gun reform laws as unconstitutional is the calling card of the NRA and the gun lobby.

I don't see how anyone can take what he said as being anything new or different compared to what the Department of Homeland Security already does...

Are Republicans only aware of what government agencies do on a regular basis when they want to?
