Democrats never held the Senate because of Manchin and Sinema, so this just makes the split even worse if they don't win PA or GA

So... as far as I can tell democrats lost the house and their best case scenario for the senate is even worst than before. I thought they would lose seats in the house but I didn't quite expect they would straight up lose it (then again I haven't followed US politics that much recently). In any case democrat's overall inability to message and balking on biden's core campaign promises finally paid off exactly as it should have. Biden did eventually come around to student debt relief but it honestly seemed like a way too desperate measure that came way too late and that at a time when the economy wasn't doing as when his presidency started. On the upside, we get to see biden being a buffoon for two more years as he lays a red carpet sprinkled with gold for when trump returns. Or who knows, maybe Desantis dethrones trump.

Boebert lost but Taylor Green won? Did Boebert not lean into the MAGA shit hard enough or what lol?

Then again I'm hearing people are getting lukewarm about Trump now because him being a dick to Desantis, and the timing of him announcing his presidential run (next week I think?)

Just seems like posturing to me, Republicans are okay with Trump insulting their wives as long as it means "winning"

Sooo... that whole thing with Democrats promoting Republican MAGA types in order to make sure they can take them out in the midterms...

How do we feel about that? Because it looks like it was a pretty viable strategy. I kinda feel icky about it... but still. Necessary evil. Right?

...right?

I guess there's money there but I'd be interested in what the actual influence is.

It is kind of hilarious though

Not happy because what if the plan failed? MAGA republicans would have been in charge.

What's going on here? Reading the news suggests this wasn't a loss for democrats but they lost the house and probably the senate (which in reality they didn't actually have anyways but this isn't an improvement at least)?

They're spinning it as a win since Biden is unpopular and inflation is fucking everyone so most analyst were expecting worse

I suppose it's as good a time as any to pretty much consider biden's presidency done. Lost the house, at best the senate stays mostly the same and biden failed to even make a case to defend his core campaign promises, let alone fight for them when he had marginal amounts of leverage. The only thing that has changed is that now it doesn't seem so absurd that desantis might be able to steal away the party's nomination from trump for 2024. It's not exactly a likely scenario yet but it seems possible at least. Which is a silver lining at? Hopefully democrats will take the next 6 years to stop being incompetent and useless asshats.

This might not be directly related to the elections but what is your Vice President doing? Forgot her name to be honest...

Usually, at least since I can remember german media does give some spotlight to the American Vice President, typically making him one of the most featured american politicians here. But the current one is entirely absent, it is Biden, Blinken and some Pelosi.
She is the most absent Vice President of the Century. If you would show random germans on the streets pictures of her, Blinken and Pelosi, and ask who the current Vice President of America is, I think most people would pick Pelosi because "woman" is all they remember about the actual one.

So is this maybe just some structural problem of german media or is this an actual reflection of her standing in American politics?

Nah, she definitely has been absent from the spotlight. She has a few gaffes under her belt so perhaps she was strategically removed from it? Allegedly she is still fairly important in biden's decision making but even if that is true it's not good politics for her to not be on the spotlight.

The VP can range from Dan Quayle to Dick Cheney. But most don't do anything outside of diplomatic things and maybe break and tie in the senate.

I mean, it is a win, taking into account that most latest presidents have lost the house in their first midterms, usually with a worse margin.
Clinton, Trump and Obama all lost the house in their first midterms, and at least the first two didn't have to deal with anything remotely as bad as biden has here.
If Democrats can hold the Senate and only miss a few votes in the house they can still pass major legislation.
Republicans erupt over infrastructure defections - The Washington Post

We had 13 republican defectors in the house helping Biden to pass his infrastructure Bill. We do not know how many House Seats Democrats will end up with yet, but at the Moment, they are missing 17 Seats for a Majority. It is likely that they pick up ten seats or so, possibly more.
That would mean they only always need a hand full of republicans to get a bill through the house.

THat is a much better deal than what clinton, Trump or Obama were handed after their first midterms, achieving that in a time in which economic decline hits the country is pretty solid, It is really hard to call that a lose if the US reality is that most midterms end up substantially worse for the ruling party (and bush jr was an exception because he was still riding the afghanistan wave back then).

If you have to qualify it, it's not really a "win". It's a referendum on the current state of the country and his presidency. Qualifiers are nice, there may be a silver lining, but it's not a win for his agenda or anything of the sort. He'll be accomplishing even less going forward.

Republicans are going to just be lockstep obstructionist and the ones that might have worked with the Dems in the past are going to hope and pray that someone like Trump isn't the nominee. They won't forsake their own agendas in the hopes that it'll play well in their purple districts like when Trump was President.

I honestly don't know. I hadn't been keeping up with it and I'm just now checking again after I said she lost the other day cause it looked like she was losing... but it looks like it's still "too close to call" or something?

I think this is gonna make people antsy and even more prone to claim that shenanigans are taking place.

I thought republicans would do better, disappointing. It seems republicans dont understand and never will understand that America is and almost always has been a democrat majority country, they should give up. Even hillary got more votes than trump but he still barely got by. I think roe wade screwed them up, very dumb on their part, we already know the majority of people didn't like the decision. The democrats just really want their abortion. Overall, It's funny how america is majority democrat and the majority of people say the country is going in the wrong direction. I see a good chance of democrats winning the 2024 election even if it get's worse although it probably wont. I don't see any change happening in the parties, both parties have radical ideas and are still doing great. The brainwashing and cult/herd mentality is too strong for any change, just look at hitler,s talin, zedong and the rest of history. Generations and societies always think they are right, but we look back at them in the history books sometimes entertained by their ignorance and arrogance. How do we know we aren't another one of those? In my opinion, from a fundamental and statistical standpoint, we must also be in the wrong like our ancestors! I think that could be us next, assuming that there are still history books by then. I suppose history really does repeat itself. humans are just meant to be programmed, we have habits and instincts for biological advantage! Whether it's stalin, hitler, trump, biden, desantis, we will stick with them for protection. who wouldn't follow authority and join a side? that would just get you left alone and probably killed.

I keep googling but it says Boobert is ahead, but also it's confusing AND I'm hoping she isn't.

The country isn't democrat majority, the thing is that most people know republicans are horrible. Democrats probably won't be winning 2024 unless BIden finds a way to appease the left or the republicans become even worse than they already are. Had Trump not been so bigoted, he might have won the popular vote.

But also, republicans try their best to gerrymander and suppress votes, and if they didn't do that, they'd lose so much power.
