I think there are about 25% hardcore maga republicans minimum and at least half of them can get behind it. De Santis is someone who can drive the manga course and get some voters that like Trump, but Trump is going to get a siezable chunk.

I think it will be somewhat like 2016: Trump does not have more than 50% of the votes, but he might become the strongest candidate if there is another strong candidate aside from De Santis. If De Santis runs alone (besides small fry) against trump, I cannot imagine Trump winning tho. I think if the GOP had united behind one candidate in 2016, Trump would have lost, too.

Personally I think trump has this in the bag. As of now at least. Because the question is not whether desantis can clinch the nomination from trump. I think this is perfectly feasible but it is also completely irrelevant. The republicans need to answer is whether they want to get rid of trump OR win the presidency. Look at the past election. Biden won of course but trump pretty much never conceded and has called the results illegitimate. Which the maga cult believes to be fact.

Which gets us to the core issue... MAGA. A bunch of idiots who believe trump is essentially (and sometimes literally) a religious figure who will bring salvation to their souls and damnation to pedophile democrats. Which is all democrats and along with anyone else they happen to not like or agree with. Some of these lunatics believe trump is currently president and is in control of half the US military which he uses to destroy democrat pedophile tunnels across the god damn globe. Except in cases where they believe the earth is flat and 6000 years old.

Now, desantis could win but... would trump accept the defeat gracefully? Of course not. Trump will throw a tantrum, tell them desantis cheated and that trump is actually the republican nominee. Which will lose desantis the fairly mainstream maga crowd. Which will cost republicans the presidency. Desantis is probably popular even among maga folk but it takes but a word from trump for him to be as much as a pedophile bloodsucking liberal as hillary. Basically for maga folk it's trump or bust. And desantis needs a few more miracles to break trump's hold over the party.

Desantis is young enough to retry again later and he's beloved in Florida so he'll be perfectly fine with stepping aside for Trump provided he doesn't have as big of an ego pushing him to keep pursuing the presidency... but a lot of the MAGA losses during the midterms came from conservatives tired of the hyper-aggressive culture wars shit it seems. So if that's the case, Desantis must appeal to those conservatives that are less... MAGA-y. The question is are there enough of them out there to get him the 'nom?

Also, how down and dirty are they willing to get to move Trump out of the way? Surely as much or more than Hillary did to Bernie. Though Bernie bros weren't nearly as devoted to Bernie as MAGA Republicans are to Trump.

Yeah, it's weird. Because if he throws everyone he appealed to in Florida under the bus to pursue the presidency he may lose a lot of the support he garnered. But if he stuck with it, he wouldn't be able to differentiate himself from Trump enough that anyone would choose Great Value Trump over Name brand Trump. But I have a feeling the powers that be would back him more than they would Trump if things go the same way they've been going.

As for the shooting, I'm so tired of MTG. And the right in general.

You know, 10 or even 5 years ago I tried to be more even-handed with the right. Surely the internet's ubiquitous use of terms like "nazi" or "fascist" was just left-wing loonies refusing to acknowledge what a dictionary is.

Not because I think a "good guy with a gun" would've prevented what happened, but because of what Tucker is saying. He's promoting this kind of behavior. And I'd be a lot more comfortable standing up for what I believe in if I knew someone was gonna think twice about shooting me for believing it, because they know the people behind me will shoot back.

Absolutely insane for an outsider, but maybe something can be done about demented gun culture if every queer person was carrying. California, the NRA, and Reagan were very quick to consider gun control once black revolutionaries took full advantage of the law, so who knows. Not optimistic though.
